Matthew 22:37

Look at what's happening here. Some religious lawyers have been trying to trap Jesus all day — trick questions about taxes, about resurrection — and now one of them, an expert in the Jewish Law, asks him: which commandment is the greatest? It's not an innocent question. Rabbis in that era loved to debate which of the 613 commands in the Law mattered most, and any answer could be picked apart. Jesus doesn't hedge or split the difference. He goes straight to the oldest, most familiar prayer in Israel — words every Jewish child had memorized, recited morning and night: "Hear, O Israel..." Tyndale. He's quoting Deuteronomy 6:5 almost word for word.

What's easy to miss is the word "with." Three times: with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. This isn't asking for a feeling. In Jewish thought, "heart" wasn't the seat of emotion the way we use it — it was the control center of the whole person, your will and your decision-making. "Soul" is your whole life, your breath, everything that makes you you. "Mind" is your thinking, your reasoning. Jesus is saying: God doesn't want a slice of you. He wants all of you — your choices, your desires, your thoughts — pulling in the same direction, toward him.

Notice too that Jesus doesn't stop here — verse 39 immediately adds "love your neighbor as yourself," and says the whole Law and the Prophets hang on these two John Gill. This verse sits right at the hinge point of Matthew's Gospel — Jesus is in Jerusalem in the last week before the cross, and the religious leaders are running out of questions to ask him. There's no real denominational disagreement on what the verse says; the debate that does exist is over what it means that we're commanded to feel something — can love be commanded at all? That question will matter later.

Matthew wrote his Gospel most likely between AD 60 and 85, for a Jewish-Christian audience — people who knew their Hebrew Scriptures cold and needed to see that Jesus was the fulfillment of everything they'd been taught, not a rejection of it. This scene takes place during Holy Week, probably Tuesday of the week Jesus was crucified, inside the Temple courts in Jerusalem — the most contested religious real estate on earth at that moment.

By this point in the week, the chief priests, the Sadducees, and the Pharisees have all taken turns trying to publicly humiliate Jesus with trick questions, hoping to either get him arrested by Rome for sedition or discredited in front of the crowds who see him as a prophet. The question about the greatest commandment wasn't unusual for the time — rabbis genuinely debated how to summarize the Law, since 613 individual commands is a lot to carry around, and teachers were often asked to state the "weight-bearing" principle underneath them all. Jesus's answer would have landed as both completely orthodox and completely disarming — he quotes the Shema, the very words stitched into the phylacteries (small leather boxes with Scripture inside) that observant Jewish men strapped to their foreheads and arms in prayer John Gill. He's not innovating. He's reaching for the most sacred, unarguable text available and showing that everything else — every sacrifice, every purity law, every prophet's rebuke — was always meant to serve this one thing: a whole-person love for God. No one in the room could argue with the text. They could only feel the weight of how far they'd drifted from actually living it.

The verb Jesus uses is ἀγαπάω (agapáō, G25) — "to love" Strong's. In Greek there were several words for love, but agapáō carries the sense of a love that's a matter of will and commitment, not just warm feeling — which matters here, because Jesus is commanding it. You can't command butterflies in your stomach, but you can command where you point your loyalty and your choices.

Then come the three prepositional phrases, each built the same way: ἐν ὅλῃ (en hólē) — "with/in all" — attached to a different noun. καρδία (kardía, G2588) is "heart," but the Strong's definition is telling: it means the thoughts and feelings together, the command center of a person, not just emotion Strong's. ψυχή (psychḗ, G5590) is translated "soul," but literally means breath, the whole animating life-force of a person — everything that makes you alive and you Strong's. διάνοια (diánoia, G1271) is "mind" — literally "through-thinking," the faculty of understanding, reasoning things out Strong's.

Interestingly, Deuteronomy 6:5 and Mark's version of this saying ( Mark 12:30) include a fourth term, "strength" — but Matthew's version only lists three. That's not a contradiction; it's just Matthew compressing the Hebrew idiom "heart, soul, strength" into a slightly different Greek shape while keeping the same meaning: everything you are, aimed at God. The word ὅλῃ (hólē, G3650) — "whole, complete" — is doing the heavy lifting three times over. This isn't a menu of options. It's totality.

Here's the uncomfortable turn: Jesus doesn't just teach this commandment — he's the only human being who ever actually kept it. Every choice he made, every hour of prayer, every refusal to grab power or comfort or safety when it was offered to him, was heart, soul, and mind aimed entirely at his Father. In Gethsemane, sweating blood, staring down the cross, he still said "not my will, but yours" ( Luke 22:42) — that's what whole-hearted love looks like when it costs everything.

And that matters for you, because none of us have loved God like that. Not for a day, let alone a lifetime. Paul says it plainly: the mind set on the flesh is actually hostile to God, unable to submit to him ( Romans 8:7). We don't just fall short of this command — something in us resists it. So this verse isn't just an instruction; it's also, quietly, a mirror that shows you the depth of your need.

That's where Jesus becomes good news rather than just a good teacher. He didn't come only to repeat the command — he came to fulfill it in your place, and then to give you his own Spirit so that love for God stops being an impossible law and starts becoming a real, if imperfect, response of gratitude. Notice too that Jesus immediately pairs this with love of neighbor (v. 39) — and he's the one who shows what that looks like taken to its limit, laying down his life for people who didn't love him back ( Romans 5:8). The Shema asked Israel for total love; Jesus is the one who both embodies it perfectly and makes it possible for broken people like you and me to begin living it, however haltingly, by his Spirit at work in us.

Here's the question this verse won't let you dodge: not "do you believe in God," not "do you go to church," but where is your heart actually pointed right now? Heart, soul, mind — Jesus isn't asking for a Sunday morning slice of you. He's asking for the whole operating system: your desires, your decisions, your inner monologue, your daydreams, the thing you think about when you're not thinking about anything in particular.

Be honest with yourself for a second. What actually has that kind of claim on you? For most of us it's not some dramatic idol — it's something quieter and more respectable: career, approval, control, comfort, a relationship, your own reputation. None of those are evil in themselves. But this verse asks whether they're sitting on the throne where God belongs.

The cost here isn't abstract. Loving God with all your mind might mean actually wrestling honestly with what you believe instead of coasting on inherited assumptions. Loving him with all your soul might mean letting your whole life — not just your religious hours — answer to him. Loving him with all your heart might mean admitting there are things you love more than him right now, and asking him to change that, because you can't manufacture that love by sheer effort.

That's the good news hiding in the hard command: you're not left to grit your teeth and try harder. The same God who asks for everything is the God who, in Christ, gives everything first. Let that order sink in before you try to obey. Love, real love, starts as a response to being loved — not a performance to earn it.

• Lord, show me honestly where my heart is divided — what I actually love more than you, even when I'd never admit it out loud.
• Teach me to love you with my mind, not just my emotions — help me think clearly and truthfully about who you are instead of coasting on assumptions.
• I confess I can't manufacture whole-hearted love for you by willpower alone — I need your Spirit to do in me what I can't do myself.
• Thank you that Jesus loved you perfectly in my place, when I never could — let that truth humble me and free me at the same time.
• Give me a love for you today that actually shapes my choices, not just my feelings — heart, soul, and mind pointed the same direction.

• If someone watched your calendar and your bank statement for a month with no other information, what would they conclude you love most?
• Where in your life have you settled for loving God with a fraction of yourself instead of all of yourself — and why there?
• What thought, ambition, or relationship currently has more real estate in your mind than God does?
• Does the idea of loving God as a command feel oppressive to you, or freeing? Why might that be?
• Jesus kept this commandment perfectly and you haven't — how does that truth land on you: as condemnation, or as relief?
