Matthew 20:28

Look at the shape of this sentence: "just as... so." Jesus isn't handing out a random piece of advice about humility. He's grounding an entire way of life in his own identity and mission. The verse comes right on the heels of James and John's mother asking for the best seats in the kingdom, and the other ten disciples getting indignant about it ( Matthew 20:20-24). So Jesus gathers them and basically says: you're all playing the wrong game. The Gentile rulers "lord it over" people — that's how the world runs, power flowing downhill onto everyone else. "Not so with you," he says (v. 26). And then he gives the reason that's supposed to reorder their whole ambition: the Son of Man himself — his own favorite title for himself, echoing the glorious, enthroned figure in Daniel 7:13-14 who is given "dominion and glory and a kingdom" — did not come to be served but to serve.

Notice the two verbs sitting side by side: "came" and "serve." The One who by every right should be attended to, waited on, worshiped, chose the opposite posture. And then the verse doesn't stop at "serve" — it drives all the way to "give His life as a ransom for many." Serving isn't just washing feet or fetching bread; ultimately it means dying. The word "ransom" (more on that below) points to a price paid to free someone — and "for many" tells you this isn't abstract, it's substitutionary: his life stands in the place of others' lives.

Where Christians disagree: exactly how the ransom "works" — who is it paid to? Some early theologians pictured it paid to Satan (a view almost no one holds now); the Reformers and most since have understood it as satisfying the demands of God's justice against sin, while others emphasize it more as the price of freedom from slavery to sin and death without pressing the "paid to whom" question. The text itself doesn't spell out a mechanism — it gives you a picture and trusts you to feel its weight.

Matthew wrote his Gospel most likely between AD 60-80, probably for a Jewish-Christian community trying to understand how Jesus of Nazareth was actually the fulfillment of Israel's whole story — Law, Prophets, and promised kingdom. This verse sits inside a scene happening on the road up from Jericho to Jerusalem, in the final days before the crucifixion John Gill. Jericho sat roughly ten miles from Jerusalem, and the road climbed steeply — pilgrims took it every year heading up for Passover, and Jesus was walking it now with a crowd that had just watched him heal blind men and call a tax collector named Zacchaeus down out of a tree.

The disciples' minds were on politics, not crucifixion. Everyone assumed the Messiah would arrive in Jerusalem and set up an earthly throne, throwing off Roman occupation. That's exactly why James and John's mother had just asked for her sons to sit at Jesus' right and left "in your kingdom" — she pictured a royal court, and wanted the best cabinet positions for her boys. The other ten disciples were furious, not because the request was wrong-headed but because they wanted those seats too.

In that world, greatness meant exactly what Jesus names in verse 25: Gentile rulers "lord it over" their subjects and "exercise authority" over them — a picture every first-century Jew knew intimately, since Rome's governors and client-kings did precisely that, taxing, conscripting, and crucifying to keep control Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Servants existed to be used by masters, not the other way around. Jesus takes that entire social pyramid and flips it upside down, then grounds the reversal in nothing less than his own coming death — a death none of the disciples, at this point on the road, were remotely prepared to accept as the goal rather than the catastrophe.

The title υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου — "Son of Man" (huiós, G5207, and ánthrōpos, G444) — is Jesus' preferred self-designation, and it's not humble self-deprecation. It reaches back to Daniel 7:13-14, where "one like a son of man" comes on the clouds and receives everlasting dominion Tyndale. So the very title that sounds lowly is actually a claim to cosmic kingship — which makes the next word land like a thunderclap.

διακονέω (diakonéō, G1247) means to wait tables, to attend to someone's needs — the word Christians later borrowed for the office of "deacon." It's the language of a servant at a banquet, not a king on a throne Strong's. Jesus takes a king's title and a servant's verb and welds them together in one sentence.

λύτρον (lýtron, G3083) is the real hinge word. It comes from a root meaning "to loosen" and specifically meant the price paid to free a slave or a prisoner of war — a ransom Strong's. This isn't vague religious language; it's economic and legal language borrowed straight from the marketplace where people bought captives out of bondage.

ἀντί (antí, G473) means "instead of" or "in place of" — a straightforward substitution word Strong's. Paired with lýtron, you get "a ransom-price paid in place of." Someone's freedom is purchased by someone else standing in for them.

And ψυχή (psychḗ, G5590) — "life" or "soul" — is what gets handed over Strong's. Not a symbol, not a gesture. The actual, breathing life of Jesus is the currency.

Together: the King's own life, given as the substitutionary price, to buy freedom for many.

This verse is the Christ connection — it's Jesus explaining his own mission in his own words, arguably as plainly as he ever does in the Gospels. Everything else in Scripture that points toward substitution and sacrifice converges here. Isaiah had already sketched the shape of it seven hundred years earlier: a servant who is "pierced for our transgressions," who bears "the sin of many" and makes intercession for transgressors ( Isaiah 53:5, 12) — language Jesus is clearly drawing on when he says "ransom for many."

Paul later takes this exact word-picture and runs with it: in 1 Timothy 2:6 Jesus "gave Himself as a ransom for all," and in Titus 2:14 he "gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness." The author of Hebrews picks up the once-for-all nature of it — Christ "offered once to bear the sins of many" ( Hebrews 9:28), no repeat sacrifices needed, unlike the endless cycle of animal offerings under the old covenant. Peter, writing to people facing real suffering, grounds their hope in the same fact: "Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God" ( 1 Peter 3:18).

And notice — Jesus doesn't just teach this truth, he lives it out physically a few hours before he dies, wrapping a towel around his waist and washing his disciples' feet (see Luke 22:27, spoken at that same table). The whole trajectory of his life — leaving heaven's glory, entering poverty and weakness ( 2 Corinthians 8:9), living as a servant, dying as a substitute — is this verse in miniature. If you want to know what God's power actually looks like when it shows up in a human body, it doesn't look like a throne room. It looks like a cross, and a life poured out to buy others' freedom.

Here's the uncomfortable part: this verse isn't just a fact about Jesus for you to admire from a safe distance. Verse 26, right before it, says "whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant" — and then this verse is given as the reason why. You're being asked to actually run your life on this logic: greatness through giving, not taking.

Be honest with yourself for a second. Where in your life are you quietly playing the James-and-John game — angling for the seat, the credit, the recognition, the position where people serve you? It might not be a throne. It might be who gets thanked in the meeting, who gets deferred to at home, who gets to be right. The instinct is the same one that put James and John's mother on her knees in front of Jesus asking for the best chairs.

Jesus doesn't shame that ambition out of you by moralizing. He does it by showing you what real greatness cost him — his own life, handed over as a ransom, so that you could be free. The cost he's asking of you now is smaller than that, but it's real: put down the seat you were angling for. Serve someone who can't repay you and won't thank you properly. Let go of being served, even in the small daily currency of attention and deference, and see if you can find joy in it instead of resentment.

And underneath all of that — let this verse actually land on you personally. You are one of the "many" his life was given for. Not a crowd, not a category. You, specifically, cost him everything. Sit with that today instead of rushing past it to the moral lesson.

• Lord Jesus, thank you that you didn't come to be served but to serve, and that your service reached all the way to giving your life for me.
• Show me the places where I'm quietly grasping for the best seat, the credit, or the recognition, like James and John did.
• Give me the courage to serve someone today who can't repay me and won't even notice the cost.
• Help me actually believe that I am one of the "many" your life was ransomed for — not in theory, but in the ache of my own heart.
• Break the world's logic of "lording it over" out of me, and replace my ambition with yours.

• Does the word "ransom" feel real to you — like a price actually paid — or has it become a familiar phrase you've stopped hearing?
• Who is someone in your life you could serve this week with zero expectation of thanks or return?
• If greatness in God's kingdom is measured by service, not status, how would your priorities this month actually change?
• Can you name one thing it currently costs you to believe that Jesus gave his life specifically "for many" — including you?
