Matthew 13:35

Look at what Matthew is doing here — he stops the story cold to explain why Jesus teaches in parables. He's just told a string of them: mustard seed, yeast, hidden treasure. Then Matthew steps back and says: this isn't just Jesus's teaching style, this is prophecy coming true. He quotes what looks like Psalm 78:2 — "I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world" — and calls it something "spoken through the prophet."

Here's the wrinkle worth noticing: Psalm 78 is credited to Asaph, a worship leader, not one of the classic "prophets" like Isaiah or Jeremiah. Matthew's not sloppy — in the ancient Jewish mind, anyone who spoke God's truth under his inspiration could be called a prophet, and the Psalms were read as prophetic literature pointing forward. So Matthew reads an old song about Israel's history — a recap of God's mighty acts from Egypt to David — and hears in it something bigger than Asaph himself knew he was saying Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

The line "things hidden since the foundation of the world" is the real weight of the verse. Jesus isn't inventing new information out of thin air with these parables — he's pulling back a curtain on something that's been true and planned since before creation itself, but never fully shown until now. That's a massive claim for a guy telling stories about seeds and yeast to farmers and fishermen.

This sits right in the middle of Matthew 13, the great "kingdom parables" chapter, where Jesus is explaining why the kingdom of heaven doesn't look like anyone expected — small, hidden, growing quietly Matthew Henry. Where readers disagree: some see this verse as Matthew loosely using an Old Testament text the way rabbis often did, applying old words to a new situation; others insist Matthew means Asaph was, without fully knowing it, writing about the Messiah centuries in advance. Both views take the fulfillment seriously — they differ on how directly the original psalm "meant" it.

Matthew's Gospel was almost certainly written for a community of Jewish Christians, somewhere between AD 60–85, likely in or around Antioch in Syria or possibly Galilee — a group trying to work out how faith in Jesus as Messiah fit with the Hebrew Scriptures they'd grown up on. Matthew writes like a lawyer building a case: over and over he says "this happened to fulfill what was spoken," stacking up Old Testament quotations to prove to skeptical Jewish readers that Jesus is the promised King, not a break from Israel's story but its climax.

By the time Matthew 13 happens, Jesus has hit real resistance. The religious leaders have already accused him of working for Satan ( Matthew 12:24), and his own family thinks he's lost his mind ( Mark 3:21). So when he starts speaking almost exclusively in parables to the crowds — stories that hide as much as they reveal — it's a turning point. He explains to his disciples in Matthew 13:11-15 that the parables are deliberately double-edged: they open truth to those who are already leaning in, and they conceal it from those who've already hardened their hearts against him, echoing Isaiah 6:9-10.

Psalm 78, the source of Matthew's quotation, was originally a teaching song for Israelite worship — Asaph rehearsing the nation's history of rebellion and God's patient faithfulness, meant to be sung by parents to children "so that the next generation would know" ( Psalm 78:6). It was communal memory set to music, sung in the temple courts long before Jesus. Matthew's first readers would have known that psalm by heart. For Matthew to say Jesus's parables fulfill it is to say: the whole sweep of Israel's history — judges, kings, exile — was itself pointing toward a moment when God's hidden wisdom would finally walk among them in flesh and speak in stories by the Sea of Galilee.

The key verb is πληρόω (plēróō, G4137) — "fulfilled." It doesn't just mean "this old prediction came true like a fortune cookie." It carries the sense of filling something up to its brim, bringing it to its intended completion Strong's. Matthew is saying the psalm's words finally reached the fullness of what they were always meant to hold.

Then there's ἀνοίγω (anoígō, G455), "to open" — literally opening a mouth, a door, eyes. Paired with στόμα (stóma, G4750), "mouth," the phrase "I will open my mouth" pictures speech that's been shut up, now released Strong's. Something that couldn't be said before is now being said.

Παραβολή (parabolē, G3850) is the word behind "parable" — it means literally "a placing beside," setting one thing next to another for comparison. It can mean a story-illustration, but also a riddle or dark saying — which is important, because Jesus's parables aren't cute little morals, they're comparisons designed to make you work, and sometimes to trip up the proud Strong's.

Finally, κρύπτω (kryptō, G2928), "to conceal, hide, cover over" — the root behind "hidden." The Greek word underneath the Septuagint's version of this psalm-quote (Matthew is quoting the Greek Old Testament here, not the Hebrew directly) uses a form related to ἐρεύγομαι (ereúgomai, G2044), which oddly means "to belch" — to speak out something that's been welling up inside, forcefully brought to the surface Strong's. The image is almost violent: truth that's been pressurized under the surface of history for ages, finally erupting into the open through Jesus's own mouth.

This verse puts Jesus at the center of something that started before he was even born as a man — before anything was born. "Hidden since the foundation of the world" is language Paul picks up almost word for word in Ephesians 3:9, calling it "the mystery... kept hidden in God, who created all things," and again in 1 Corinthians 2:7, "the mysterious and hidden wisdom of God, which He destined for our glory before time began." Jesus himself uses the same phrase in John 17:24, saying the Father loved him "before the foundation of the world." So this isn't a throwaway phrase — it's Matthew's way of saying that the parables Jesus tells by a lake in Galilee are actually a window into a plan God had running since before Genesis chapter one.

Think about what that means: the mustard seed, the yeast, the hidden treasure — these aren't clever teaching tricks Jesus came up with on the spot. They're glimpses into something ancient, something God has been carrying since before creation, now finally being spoken out loud through the very mouth of his Son. Jesus is not just a teacher explaining truths — he is the moment the hidden plan gets opened, because he is the plan. The kingdom of heaven he describes in parables is the kingdom he himself brings.

And notice the shape of the pattern: God has always worked this way — hiding his purposes in plain sight, in a psalm, in a history, in a nation's story — and then revealing them fully at the time he chooses ( Amos 3:7, Isaiah 42:9). Jesus is where that pattern reaches its climax. Everything hidden in the Old Testament — every psalm, every law, every strange old story — was never random. It was seed waiting for this exact soil: the mouth of the Son of God, opening at last to tell you what's been true about you and about him since before the world began.

Here's the uncomfortable part: parables don't hand you truth on a platter. They make you lean in, or they let you walk away unchanged. Jesus chose to teach this way on purpose — not to make things easier, but because how you respond to a hidden thing reveals what's actually in your heart. Are you curious enough to ask what the story means? Or do you hear "a farmer scattered seed" and shrug and go back to your day?

This verse tells you something that should stop you: what Jesus said in those parables has been sitting in the mind of God since before the universe existed. It's not fresh material he improvised for a Tuesday afternoon crowd. It's ancient, and it was written with you specifically in mind — your century, your doubts, your resistance. God didn't have to open his mouth. He chose to, in Christ, and he chose to do it in a way that costs you something to receive: humility. You have to admit you don't already have this figured out. You have to sit with the story instead of demanding a bullet-point summary.

The cost here is patience and hunger. It's easy to skim past a parable, nod, and move on. It's harder to let it work on you the way yeast works through dough — slowly, invisibly, until the whole thing is different. Ask yourself honestly: when you read Jesus's words, are you the kind of soil that lets the seed take root, or are you hardened path where the truth just bounces off? The mouth of God has opened. The only question left is whether your ears are open too.

• Give me patience with the parts of your Word that don't make immediate sense to me; help me sit with hard sayings instead of rushing past them.
• Soften whatever in me has gone hard like a well-worn path — make my heart good soil for what you're saying to me.
• Thank you that your plan for me was already in motion before I existed — help me trust that even now, in what feels hidden or unclear.
• Teach me to listen the way someone listens who really wants to understand, not just someone checking a box called "reading the Bible."
