Leviticus 22:18

Look at who's being addressed: Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites. That's unusual — most of Leviticus 22 is instructions specifically for priests. But this verse widens the lens to everybody, because what's coming applies to any Israelite, and even to any "foreign resident" — a non-Israelite living among God's people — who wants to bring an offering Strong's. That's already worth pausing on: God's altar isn't a members-only club walled off from outsiders. A resident foreigner could bring a gift to the LORD too.

The verse names two kinds of offerings that are voluntary, not required: a "vow" (a promise made to God — "if you do this for me, I'll give you that") and a "freewill offering" (a spontaneous gift, no strings, no promise attached) Strong's. Both get bundled under the umbrella term "burnt offering" — the offering that goes up entirely in smoke, nothing kept back, nothing eaten by the offerer Strong's. Tyndale's notes point out something easy to miss: a person could apparently choose to bring a whole burnt offering here instead of what you'd expect for a vow — normally a peace offering, where you'd share a meal with God and the priests Tyndale. That's a striking substitution: instead of a shared meal, total surrender, nothing held back for yourself.

This verse is the doorway into a paragraph (through verse 25) that will insist these voluntary gifts still have to meet God's standard: unblemished animals, no exceptions, even though nobody forced you to bring anything in the first place. That's the real weight of the passage — not "which offering" but "does your offering cost you something real." Where this sits in Leviticus: chapters 21–22 guard the holiness of the priesthood and the sacrifices right before chapter 23 lays out Israel's calendar of feasts — this is the fine print making sure worship stays worship and doesn't become empty ritual.

Leviticus comes from the priestly instructions given to Moses, most likely compiled and taught to Israel while they were camped at Mount Sinai, sometime in the mid-to-late 1400s BC if you take the traditional dating, after the exodus from Egypt but before entering the promised land. This is a brand-new nation, barely a few months old, with no temple yet — just a portable tent-sanctuary, the tabernacle, sitting in the middle of a desert camp of maybe a couple million people.

Picture the scene: no permanent building, no city, just tents in every direction and one tent at the center where God's presence dwells. Every sacrifice happens right there, in view of the whole camp. There's no anonymity in this system — when you bring an animal to the altar, your neighbors watch you do it.

The mention of "any foreign resident" matters historically. Israel left Egypt as what the text calls a "mixed multitude" ( Exodus 12:38) — non-Israelites who joined them, plus people they'd pick up along the way as they moved through the ancient Near East. God is building in, from day one, a place at his altar for people who weren't born Israelite but chose to live among his people and worship his God. That's not a footnote; that's a deliberate policy written into the law itself.

Vows and freewill offerings were common practice across the ancient world — people made promises to their gods in crisis and paid up when the god came through, as we see even outside Israel's story ( Jonah 1:16, where pagan sailors do exactly this). What's different here is that God regulates how his people fulfill those vows — even a spontaneous gift to the God of Israel has to meet a real standard, not just whatever's convenient or cheap.

The word for "gift" here is קׇרְבָּן (qorbân, H7133), which comes from the verb קָרַב (qârab, H7126), meaning "to draw near" or "bring near" Strong's. A qorbân isn't primarily "a sacrifice" in the sense of loss — it's literally "a thing brought near." The whole point of the gift is proximity: you're bringing something close to God, closing distance. That reframes the entire chapter — this isn't paperwork, it's people trying to get near their God.

Then you've got the two categories: נֶדֶר (neder, H5088), "a vow," a promise made to God, something you're now obligated to keep Strong's; and נְדָבָה (nᵉdâbâh, H5071), a "freewill offering," rooted in the idea of spontaneity — nobody made you, no promise is being paid off, you just wanted to give Strong's. Hebrew keeps these conceptually distinct even though both land on the altar the same way.

The offering itself is called an עֹלָה (ʻôlâh, H5930), from the verb "to go up" — it's "the ascending thing," because the whole animal burns and the smoke rises Strong's. Unlike other offerings where the meat is shared and eaten, here nothing comes back to you. It's called "the ascending offering" because that's literally all it does — it goes up and doesn't come down.

And don't skip גֵּר (gêr, H1616) — "a foreigner," but properly "a guest" Strong's. God's law uses the language of hospitality, not just tolerance, for the outsider who wants to bring a gift near.

Every qorbân in this verse — every gift "brought near" — was pointing at a problem it couldn't solve: an animal's blood could cover sin for a time, but it couldn't actually close the distance between a sinful person and a holy God. Hebrews 10:1-4 says exactly this — the law's sacrifices were "a shadow of the good things to come," repeated endlessly because they could never truly take sin away.

But look at the shape of this verse again: a gift, brought near, that ascends completely — nothing held back, nothing kept for the offerer. That's the pattern Jesus fulfills, not by bringing an offering but by being one. Ephesians 5:2 calls him "a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" — using the very sacrificial vocabulary of Leviticus. He is the ôlâh that finally, actually ascends and is accepted — his whole self given, nothing withheld, nothing kept back for himself.

And notice who this verse deliberately includes: "any foreign resident" — the gêr, the outsider, the guest. That's not incidental. Paul will later say that in Christ, "you who were once far off have been brought near" ( Ephesians 2:13) — using the same near/far language baked into the Hebrew word qorbân itself. The whole logic of the sacrificial system — outsiders being invited to draw near to God through a gift that costs something — finds its full answer in Jesus, who tears down "the dividing wall of hostility" ( Ephesians 2:14) between Jew and Gentile, insider and outsider, at the cross.

The vow language matters too. Jonah, in the belly of the fish, cries "I will fulfill what I have vowed" ( Jonah 2:9) — a man who couldn't save himself, promising to give thanks once rescued. Jesus is the greater Jonah, the one who actually goes down into death and comes back up, and who — unlike us — always, perfectly fulfills every promise made to the Father on our behalf.

Here's the uncomfortable part of this verse, hiding in plain sight: nobody made these people bring a vow offering or a freewill gift. That's the whole point of the word — nᵉdâbâh means nobody twisted your arm. And yet even the voluntary gift had to be a real gift — unblemished, costly, not the leftover animal you were going to cull anyway.

Ask yourself where you do the opposite. Where do you give God the leftover — the tired prayer at the end of an exhausting day, the spare twenty minutes, the money you weren't going to spend on anything else anyway — and call it devotion because, hey, nobody made you do it? Voluntary doesn't mean cheap. If anything, a freewill gift reveals more about your heart than an obligation does, because nobody's checking up on you. What you bring when you don't have to is the truest measure of what you actually think God is worth.

And then there's the gêr in this verse — the outsider God insists gets a place at his altar. Who's the person in your life you've quietly decided doesn't quite belong at the table — too far gone, too different, too recently arrived to really count? God wrote room for them into his law three thousand years before Christ tore the wall down for good. If he made space for the outsider back then, what does it cost you to make space now?

The verse asks you to bring something near to God that actually costs you — not because he's short on animals, but because a gift that costs nothing teaches your own heart that he's worth nothing. What's the unblemished thing in your hand today that you're tempted to swap for something with a flaw?

• Lord, forgive me for the times I've given you my leftovers and called it generosity — show me where I'm doing that right now.
• Thank you that Jesus is the offering that actually ascended, whole and unblemished, when mine never could be.
• Give me a heart that brings you gifts because I want to, not because I'm checking a box.
• Show me who the "outsider" is in my own life that I've been keeping at arm's length from your table.
• Teach me what it means to draw near to you today, not just to go through motions of worship.

• Think of the last thing you gave God voluntarily — time, money, attention. Was it your best, or your extra?
• Who have you quietly decided doesn't belong at God's table — and why do you get to decide that?
• What promise have you made to God that you still haven't kept?
• Does your worship feel like "drawing near," or has it become a routine you do at a distance?
• If nobody was watching or checking, would your gifts to God look any different than they do now?
