Leviticus 19:18

Look at how this verse is built. It's actually three moves, not one. First: "do not seek revenge." Second: "do not bear a grudge." Third — the positive command that everyone remembers and skips past the first two to get to — "love your neighbor as yourself." Then it ends with a little hammer-blow: "I am the LORD."

The Hebrew word behind "revenge" (H5358, nâqam) means to pay someone back — you hurt me, I hurt you, we're even. But God adds something sneakier: don't even "bear a grudge" (H5201, nâṭar), a word that pictures guarding or nursing something, like keeping a coal alive so it can flare up later Strong's. You might never lift a finger against the person who wronged you, and still be disobeying this command, just by keeping score in your heart. No shouting, no violence. Just quiet withholding. That's the grudge God is naming.

Then comes the phrase that swallows the whole Old Testament law whole: "love your neighbor as yourself." Rabbi Akiba later called this the great universal principle of the entire Law John Gill, and Jesus agreed — he said the whole law and the prophets hang on this and loving God ( Matthew 22:37-40). Notice "neighbor" here (H7453, rêaʻ) originally meant your fellow Israelite, the guy in your own camp — but the same chapter later stretches it to include the foreigner living among you ( Leviticus 19:34), which is exactly the seed Jesus later blows wide open in the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:30-37) Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Leviticus is God speaking to Moses out at Mount Sinai, sometime in the 15th or 13th century BC depending which timeline you follow, to a people who have just been pulled out of slavery in Egypt and are camping in the wilderness, learning how to live as a nation for the very first time. They have no land yet, no king, no cities. What they have is each other — tents pitched close together, tribes and clans who will be eating, working, marrying, and burying each other for the next forty years in the desert, and then for centuries after that in the land they're about to enter.

That's crucial for understanding this verse. This isn't abstract ethics for strangers passing in the night. This is law for people who cannot get away from each other. If your neighbor cheats you out of a loan, you're going to see his face at the well tomorrow. If you nurse a grudge, it's going to poison an entire community that has nowhere else to go. Chapter 19 as a whole reads like God taking the Ten Commandments he'd already given and working them down into the gritty specifics of everyday life — leaving grain in the fields for the poor, paying workers on time, fair scales in the marketplace, honest courts Matthew Henry. Revenge and grudge-holding show up right alongside those very practical, very unglamorous laws, because they're just as capable of destroying a community as a rigged scale is.

Two verbs at the start do the heavy lifting. נָקַם (nâqam, H5358) means to avenge or punish — the settling-of-scores instinct Strong's. נָטַר (nâṭar, H5201) literally means to guard or keep watch over something, and here it's used figuratively for cherishing anger — like a watchman standing guard over a wound, keeping it fresh instead of letting it heal Strong's. That image is worth sitting with: a grudge isn't passive, it's active maintenance. You have to work to keep it alive.

Then there's רֵעַ (rêaʻ, H7453), "neighbor" — meaning an associate, someone close to you, more or less Strong's. It's a flexible word, which is exactly why later Jewish interpreters could argue over how far it stretched, and exactly why Jesus got asked "who is my neighbor?" ( Luke 10:29).

The verb for love, אָהַב (ʼâhab, H157), is the ordinary Hebrew word for affection — the same root used for love between spouses, parents and children, friends Strong's. This isn't a watered-down "be nice" word; it's the real word for real love, just aimed outward at the person you'd rather resent.

And don't skip the last two words: אֲנִי יְהֹוָה — "I am the LORD" (H3068, Yᵉhôvâh, God's own covenant name, the name revealed to Moses at the burning bush) Strong's. This little tag line, repeated over and over through Leviticus 19, is God signing his own name to the command. It's not just good advice — it's an order from the God who owns you.

Jesus doesn't just quote this verse — he elevates it to the summit. When asked which commandment is the greatest, he names love for God first, and then immediately says the second is "like it": love your neighbor as yourself, and on these two "hang all the Law and the Prophets" ( Matthew 22:37-40). He's telling you that Leviticus 19:18 isn't one law among 613 — it's the hinge the whole door swings on.

But here's where it gets sharper. Jesus doesn't just repeat the command — he redefines "neighbor" past what anyone in Moses' audience imagined, and past what most Jews in his own day still believed, in the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:30-37): your neighbor is the person you'd cross the street to avoid, even your enemy. And then he goes one further than Leviticus ever explicitly commands: "love your enemies" ( Matthew 5:44) — taking "don't avenge yourself, don't hold a grudge" and pushing it all the way to active love for the person who actually wronged you, not just your fellow Israelite who might.

And here's the part that should stop you: Jesus doesn't just teach this, he is this. On the cross, surrounded by people who had every kind of grudge-worthy grievance against him — mockery, betrayal, injustice — he doesn't nurse the coal. He prays, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" ( Luke 23:34). Where you and I guard our wounds like Nathan guards a flame, Jesus absorbed the wound and let it die with him instead of passing it on. Paul later tells the Romans that this exact command "sums up" the entire law ( Romans 13:9), and James calls it the "royal law" ( James 2:8) — kingly, because it's the law of the King who kept it perfectly and then died to forgive the debts you never repaid him.

Be honest with yourself for a second: who's the person you're guarding a grudge against right now? Not the enemy you've never met — the coworker who took credit for your work, the family member who said the thing three years ago you still replay in the shower, the friend who didn't show up when you needed them. God isn't asking whether you've plotted their downfall. He's asking whether you're still keeping watch over the wound, refusing to let it close.

This verse costs you something specific: the right to be owed. Revenge says "you owe me pain." A grudge says "I'll collect later, quietly, by just never being warm to you again." Both of them keep a ledger. Love as God defines it here tears up the ledger — not because the debt wasn't real, but because you're choosing to absorb it instead of passing it back.

And notice, God doesn't say "love your neighbor because they deserve it." He says "I am the LORD" — because I said so, because you belong to me, because this is what it looks like to actually be my people. That's uncomfortable if you were hoping love could stay a feeling. It's a command aimed at someone who currently doesn't feel like loving that person at all.

Here's the wonder underneath the discomfort, though: you're not asked to manufacture this out of nowhere. You're loved first — with a love that absorbed every grudge you gave God reason to hold against you. Let that be the fuel, not the guilt. Who does God want you to stop keeping score with today? Not tomorrow, when it feels easier — today, while the coal is still warm and you still have the chance to let it go cold instead.
