Obadiah 1:17

Read this verse right after the punch it follows. Obadiah has just spent sixteen verses describing Edom's cruelty — how Israel's own cousin nation stood by, even joined in, while Jerusalem was ransacked — and pronouncing that Edom will drink God's judgment "continually" until they're "as though they had never been" ( Obadiah 1:16). Then comes "but." That little word carries the whole hinge of the book.

On Mount Zion — the hill in Jerusalem where the Temple stood, the place God chose to put his name — there will be deliverance. Not everywhere. Not for everyone. But there, a remnant survives the wreckage Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. The word translated "deliverance" (more literally "an escaped remnant") pictures people who got out alive when everything around them fell Strong's. Then Obadiah adds something you might skim past: "it will be holy." That's not decoration. Mount Zion isn't just going to be a safe house — it's going to be set apart, off-limits to the kind of violence and defilement Edom just committed there Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. And finally, "the house of Jacob will reclaim their possession" — the land itself, the inheritance God promised Abraham, comes back into the family's hands Tyndale.

Where Christians disagree: some read this almost entirely as a this-worldly promise — Judah's literal return from the Babylonian exile and later triumphs — while others (going back to the early church) read it as pointing past that return to something the return only foreshadowed: a permanent, spiritual homecoming secured by Christ Adam Clarke. Both readings usually agree the historical return under Cyrus wasn't the full payment on this promise — it's a down payment.

In the shape of the book, this verse is the turn. Judgment on the proud has been announced; now grace for the humbled gets the last word.

Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament — one chapter — and we don't know much about the man himself beyond his name, which means "servant of Yahweh." Most scholars place this prophecy sometime after 586 BC, when the Babylonian army under Nebuchadnezzar broke through Jerusalem's walls, burned the Temple, and marched a good portion of the population off into exile in Babylon. That was the worst day in Israel's national life up to that point — their capital gone, their kings' line broken, their God's house in ashes.

The Edomites lived just southeast of Judah, in the rugged, cliff-fortified country around Petra — descendants of Esau, Jacob's brother, which made them Israel's blood relatives ( Genesis 25:24-26). When Jerusalem fell, instead of helping their kinsmen, Edom apparently stood at the crossroads cutting off refugees, looted the ruins, and maybe even handed survivors over to the Babylonians ( Obadiah 1:11-14). That betrayal — family turning predator — is the wound this whole book is written to address.

So when Obadiah promises that Mount Zion will hold "deliverance," his first audience is a traumatized, scattered, humiliated people who watched their holy city desecrated by their own relatives while feeling abandoned by God. This isn't abstract theology to them — it's the difference between despair and hope after watching your home burn. Some of the people who first heard this were likely refugees themselves, hiding out in Egypt or Moab or wherever they'd fled (see Jeremiah 44:14 for that scattered, desperate crowd). Obadiah's message is that Edom's gloating over the ruins is not the last word — God's ownership of that mountain still stands, and one day the family that was scattered will come home to a Zion that's actually safe.

The mountain itself is named with two words: הַר (har, H2022), simply "mountain," and צִיּוֹן (Tsîyôwn, H6726), "Zion" — the specific hill in Jerusalem where the Temple sat Strong's. It's not a symbol of "spirituality in general"; it's a specific address God chose.

The key word for what happens there is פְּלֵיטָה (pᵉlêyṭâh, H6413) — "deliverance," but more concretely "an escaped portion" Strong's. Picture someone crawling out of rubble. This isn't a word for comfortable safety; it's the word for survivors. That's important — the promise isn't that Zion never gets attacked, it's that when the dust settles, someone made it out, and that someone gathers there.

Then קֹדֶשׁ (qôdesh, H6944) — "holy," a sacred place set apart, off-limits to common or defiling use Strong's. This is the same word-family used for the Temple's inner sanctuary. Zion won't just be occupied by survivors; it will be God's turf again, protected from the kind of violation Edom just committed.

Finally, the last phrase pairs a verb and a noun that share the same root: יָרַשׁ (yârash, H3423), "to take possession, often by driving out the previous occupant," and מוֹרָשׁ (môwrâsh, H4180), "a possession, an inheritance" Strong's. The house of Jacob will yarash their morash — literally, "possess their possession." It's almost redundant on purpose, hammering home: what was taken will be given back, and this time it's theirs to keep.

Obadiah doesn't name a Messiah here — there's no direct prophecy pointing to a person the way Isaiah 53 does. What you get instead is a pattern, and it's one the whole Bible keeps circling back to: judgment falls on the proud and violent, and in the middle of the wreckage, on God's own holy hill, a remnant is saved Matthew Henry.

Fast forward past Obadiah's Jerusalem to another moment when a mountain outside that same city became the site of both judgment and rescue at once — Golgotha, where Jesus absorbed the judgment his people deserved so that everyone joined to him could walk out alive. Paul later picks up this exact image — "everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved... on Mount Zion" ( Joel 2:32, quoted in Romans 10:13) — and applies it not to a hillside in Judea but to anyone anywhere who calls on Jesus as Lord. The "Mount Zion" of Obadiah's promise widens out until it becomes, in Hebrews 12:22, "Mount Zion... the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem" — the place all who are in Christ have already come to.

And notice the order Obadiah gives you: deliverance, then holiness, then inheritance restored. That's the gospel's order too. You don't get made holy in order to earn rescue — you're rescued, and then you're made holy John Gill. Revelation 21:27 pushes this all the way to the end: the New Jerusalem where "nothing unclean will ever enter," because everyone inside has been washed, not because they were clean enough to get past the door on their own. Obadiah's little "but" — judgment on Edom, but deliverance on Zion — is the same "but" that runs through the whole Bible and lands, finally, on the cross and the empty tomb.

Here's what this verse won't let you do: separate being saved from being made holy. You might want a Zion that's just an escape hatch — grab the rescue, keep the rest of your life exactly as it was. Obadiah won't give you that. "There will be deliverance, and it will be holy." The mountain that saves you is also the mountain that changes what's allowed to live there.

If you've ever been the Edom in someone's story — stood by while a family member or friend got wrecked, maybe even profited from their fall, told yourself it wasn't your problem — this verse is also a warning worth sitting with honestly. God saw exactly what Edom did at the crossroads, and he named it. He sees what you do at your crossroads too.

But if you're the one who's been wrecked — betrayed by someone who should have had your back, watching something you built get looted while people you trusted looked on — this verse is handed to you like water to someone crawling out of rubble. You are not disqualified by the ruin. The remnant on Zion isn't the people who never fell; it's the people who got out. That's who this promise is for.

The cost this verse asks of you: stop treating rescue as the finish line. If God has pulled you out of something, don't decorate the same old life with a thank-you note to him. Let the place he brought you to actually be holy ground — meaning some things that used to live in you don't get to live there anymore.

• Lord, thank you that when everything else fell apart, you kept a place of deliverance — help me actually believe I'm not too far gone to be part of that remnant.
• Search me for any place I've acted like Edom — standing by, or even profiting, while someone else's life came apart — and give me the courage to make it right.
• Don't let me settle for rescue without holiness; show me specifically what needs to change now that I'm standing on your ground and not my own.
• Thank you that Mount Zion widened out to include me, someone far from that hillside in Jerusalem — I call on the name of the Lord today and ask to be saved.
• Give me patience for the parts of the promise I haven't seen fulfilled yet — the full restoring, the full inheritance — and keep my hope fixed on Christ, not on circumstances.

• Where in my life have I wanted the deliverance part of this verse without the holiness part?
• Is there a person or situation where I've played Edom — watching someone else's disaster from a safe distance, maybe even benefiting from it?
• What "possession" — reputation, relationship, identity — do I feel like I lost, and do I actually trust God to give it back in his timing, not mine?
• When I imagine "holy ground," do I picture restriction or relief? Why?
• Have I ever felt too wrecked, too much a survivor of my own ruin, to belong on God's mountain? What would it take to actually believe otherwise?
