Amos 3:7

Look at the shape of this sentence: "Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets." It's not a general statement that God explains everything to everyone. It's a very specific claim: before God acts in judgment on the world stage, he tips his hand to the prophets first. That's the "plan" — the Hebrew word here (sôd) actually means something like a small circle of people huddled together sharing secrets, the kind of close counsel a king keeps with his most trusted advisors Strong's. God doesn't run the world like a distant CEO who never explains his moves. He pulls certain people into the room.

This verse sits inside a chain of rhetorical questions Amos fires off in Amos 3:3-8 — do two people walk together without agreeing to meet? Does a lion roar in the forest with no prey? Does a trumpet sound in a city without people trembling? Each question has an obvious "no." Then verse 8 lands the punch: the lion has roared (God has spoken), so how could Amos NOT prophesy? Verse 7 is the hinge — it's Amos's defense of his own ministry. He's basically saying: I'm not making this up, I'm not some doom-monger freelancing. Where people disagree: some read this as a universal principle — God is essentially "hands off" with judgment until warning has gone out, so every disaster you see has been preceded by warning somewhere Adam Clarke. Others read it more narrowly — this is Amos defending his specific prophetic office, not laying down a rule for how God always operates in every era or every person's life. Both readings agree on the core: this is about mercy wearing the costume of warning.

Amos was a shepherd and fig farmer from Tekoa, a small town in Judah (the southern kingdom), roughly 760-750 BC. He wasn't trained as a prophet, wasn't part of any religious guild — he tells us that himself later in the book ( Amos 7:14). God pulled him off the hillside and sent him north, to Israel, the other Jewish kingdom, to preach at Bethel, one of Israel's main royal shrines.

This was under King Jeroboam II, and on the surface, Israel was doing great. The economy was booming, the borders were secure, the wealthy were building "ivory houses" and lounging on couches (see Amos 6:4). But underneath the prosperity, the courts were corrupt, the poor were being crushed to pay for the rich man's wine, and worship at places like Bethel had become a religious performance disconnected from actual justice. It was a society that felt safe and blessed and had no idea a storm was coming.

Amos shows up as an outsider — a southerner, a farmer, uninvited — and starts announcing that God is about to bring the Assyrian war machine down on this comfortable kingdom. Naturally, people pushed back. Who is this guy? What gives him the right? Amaziah, the priest at Bethel, actually tries to run him out of town later in the book ( Amos 7:12-13). Verse 7 is Amos's answer to that exact objection: he's not a self-appointed crank. There's a pattern going all the way back — God warned Noah before the flood ( Genesis 6:13), God told Abraham what he was about to do to Sodom rather than hide it from him ( Genesis 18:17). Amos is standing in that same line. The warning itself is evidence he's been let into the room.

The verse opens with אֲדֹנָי יְהֹוִה (ʼĂdônây Yᵉhôvih, H136 + H3069) — this stacked divine name is Amos's signature move throughout the book. Adonai means "Lord/Master," and the second word is God's covenant name, pronounced carefully by Jewish readers to avoid over-repeating the sacred name Strong's. Piling them together intensifies it: this isn't just "a god," this is the Sovereign Master, the covenant-keeping I AM, both at once.

The verb for "does" is עָשָׂה (ʻâsâh, H6213) — a broad, workmanlike verb for making or doing anything at all, in any sphere Strong's. Nothing God does — no act, no event, no move on the world stage — falls outside this.

The key word is סוֹד (çôwd, H5475). It doesn't just mean "plan" in some abstract sense — it's literally the word for a close council, a huddle of intimates in private consultation, and by extension, a secret shared within that circle Strong's. Think of the difference between a king's public decree and the whispered conversation with his inner cabinet before the decree is announced. God is saying the prophets get pulled into that inner room.

And "reveals" is גָּלָה (gâlâh, H1540) — a word whose root sense is startlingly physical: to strip bare, to uncover, to expose something that was covered Strong's. It's the same word used for exile — stripping a people bare and dragging back the curtain on their nakedness. Here it's used positively: God un-hides himself, peels back the curtain on his own intentions, for the sake of his עֶבֶד (ʻebed, H5650) servants, the נָבִיא (nâbîyʼ, H5030) prophets — literally "one called" or "one who speaks for another."

This verse describes a pattern: God doesn't operate on his creatures in secret; he lets his own into the counsel room before he acts. Follow that pattern all the way to its endpoint and you land at Jesus, in the upper room, saying something almost identical: "No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything I have learned from My Father I have made known to you" ( John 15:15). Notice the upgrade — Amos describes God pulling prophets into the sod, the inner circle. Jesus takes it further: he's not just informing his followers of upcoming plans the way a master briefs a servant, he's making them friends, full participants in what the Father is doing.

That's the trajectory of the whole Bible — God moving from warning at a distance toward friendship up close. The prophets got dreams, visions, a word dropped into their ear. The disciples got the Son of God himself, walking beside them, eating with them, explaining the Scriptures to them ( Luke 24:27). And at the very end of the story, when John is given the last great unveiling of what's coming, the book itself is even named for this: "the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants what must soon come to pass" ( Revelation 1:1). The Greek word behind "revelation" there — apokalypsis — is doing the same work as gâlâh in Amos: uncovering, pulling back a curtain.

So Amos 3:7 isn't just about one farmer-turned-prophet in the 8th century BC. It's a small window into how God has always worked — he doesn't ambush the people he loves. And in Jesus, that warning-before-judgment becomes something even warmer: an invitation into friendship before the end of all things.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: if God doesn't act without warning first, have you been ignoring the warnings? Not literal prophets standing in the street — but the ways God has been trying to get your attention. The nagging conscience. The friend who said the hard true thing. The sermon that landed a little too close. The quiet unease you keep drowning out with noise. Israel in Amos's day was comfortable, prosperous, and completely unbothered — and that's exactly the condition this verse is aimed at. God wasn't silent before judgment fell on them. They just weren't listening.

But don't stop at the warning — sit with the intimacy underneath it. God didn't have to explain himself to anyone. He's not obligated to let you in on anything. The fact that he pulls people into his sod, his inner counsel, is pure grace, not something owed. The cost this verse asks of you is this: are you willing to actually be let in? Because being let into God's counsel isn't just interesting information — it changes what you're responsible for. Amos couldn't un-hear what God told him; it cost him comfort, safety, and popularity to speak it. If God has been showing you something true about yourself, your life, your direction — through his word, through people, through circumstance — you don't get to file it away as trivia. You either move toward the friendship Jesus offers, walking in step with what he's shown you, or you go back to sleep like Israel did, comfortable right up until the moment the roof came down. Which one are you doing right now, honestly?

• Lord, forgive me for the times I've ignored the warnings you've already given me — through your word, through people who love me, through my own uneasy conscience.
• Thank you that you don't operate on me in secret, that you've drawn near enough to actually tell me the truth about myself and about what's coming.
• Give me the courage of Amos — to speak what you've shown me even when it costs me comfort or approval.
• Draw me from being merely a servant who obeys orders into the kind of friend Jesus described — someone who actually knows what you're doing and why.
• Wake me up if I've grown comfortable and numb the way Israel was, prosperous on the outside and deaf on the inside.

• Where in your life does comfort or prosperity make you feel safer than you actually are?
• If God pulled you into his inner counsel today and showed you something true about your life, would you actually want to know it?
• Is there something you know you should say to someone — a hard truth, a warning out of love — that you've been avoiding because it would cost you?
• Do you relate to God more like a servant taking orders, or has it ever felt like the friendship Jesus describes in John 15:15?
