Exodus 7:5

Read this slowly: God is not talking to Pharaoh here. He's talking to Moses, before the confrontation even starts, telling him how the whole thing is going to end. Verse 3 already said Pharaoh's heart would be hardened and the plagues would multiply — and then comes verse 5, which is God explaining the point of all of it. Not just "get my people out." The point is: the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.

Notice what's doing the work in that sentence. "Stretch out my hand" is a picture of raw, physical force — think of a king raising his arm to strike Strong's. And "bring the Israelites out from among them" — that little phrase "from among" (tavek, meaning right out of the center/middle of them) tells you Israel wasn't off in some separate reservation. They were embedded inside Egyptian society, and God is going to reach in and extract them like pulling a splinter out of flesh Strong's.

But the real weight of the verse is the goal: so that the Egyptians will know. Not Israel — Egypt. The people who worship the Nile, the sun, Pharaoh himself as a god, are going to be forced to recognize the real one. This phrase "then they will know that I am the LORD" becomes almost a drumbeat through the rest of Exodus (you'll hit it again in Exodus 7:17, 8:10, 8:22, 14:4, 14:18) and later echoes on through Ezekiel when God judges the nations. This isn't a one-off line — it's the theme of the whole book.

Where this sits in the story: this is God's declared purpose statement right before the plagues begin — everything from the Nile turning to blood to the death of the firstborn flows out of this single sentence. Commentators differ on emphasis here — some (like Keil-Delitzsch Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament) stress that this repeats and deepens Moses' commissioning from chapter 6; others (like Adam Clarke Adam Clarke) stress that Pharaoh's stubbornness itself becomes the stage on which God's power gets displayed. Both are right — they're just looking at two ends of the same rope.

Exodus was almost certainly compiled from material going back to Moses himself, likely covering events around 1450–1250 BC depending on which chronology you follow (Egyptologists and biblical scholars still argue over this, and it matters less than you'd think for reading the verse). What we do know from the text: Israel had been enslaved in Egypt for generations, building storage cities under forced labor ( Exodus 1:11-14). Pharaoh — whichever historical king this was — ruled as a living god in Egyptian religion, the son of Ra, the guarantor of order (ma'at) against chaos.

That matters enormously for this verse. When God says "the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD," he's not just teaching a theology class. He's picking a fight with an entire religious-political system. Egypt had gods for the Nile, for the sun, for fertility, for the Pharaoh's own throne. Every plague that follows this verse (blood in the Nile, frogs, flies, livestock death, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, death of the firstborn) targets a specific piece of that system. This is a public, national humiliation of Egypt's entire pantheon, staged in front of the people who built their whole civilization around those gods.

And the audience isn't just Pharaoh. It's "the Egyptians" — ordinary people in the street, servants, soldiers, magicians. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown notes that Moses comes into this second confrontation not as a beggar pleading for mercy but as someone now openly carrying God's authority, called almost "a god" to Pharaoh in the verses just before this Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. That's a staggering reversal — a former shepherd, a fugitive murderer, standing in front of the most powerful monarchy on earth, armed with nothing but a word from God that history will prove true down to the letter.

The whole verse turns on one repeated verb: יָדַע (yada, H3045) — "to know." This isn't just knowing a fact in your head, like knowing the capital of France. In Hebrew it means to know by experience, to ascertain by seeing, sometimes even to be forced into painful recognition Strong's. Egypt isn't going to be handed a pamphlet about Yahweh. They're going to feel who he is, through blood and frogs and darkness and death, until denial is no longer an option.

The name at stake is יְהֹוָה (Yehovah, H3068) — the personal, covenant name of God, tied to the idea of self-existence, the Eternal One who simply is Strong's. This is the name revealed at the burning bush in Exodus 3:14, and now it's about to be branded onto Egypt's national memory through judgment.

Then there's the physical image: נָטָה יָד — "stretch out (natah, H5186) the hand (yad, H3027)." This is a gesture of a king or warrior extending his arm to strike or command, a picture of unstoppable, personal force, not some vague cosmic energy Strong's.

Finally, יָצָא (yatsa, H3318) — "bring out" or "cause to go out" — the same verb that gives the book its name, Exodus. And the phrase describing where Israel sits, תָּוֶךְ (tavek, H8432), "the middle, the center, the midst" Strong's — reminding you Israel wasn't separate from Egypt, they were woven right into the fabric of it, and God is about to tear them out.

This verse sets up the pattern that the whole rest of the Bible keeps returning to: God rescues his people by defeating a hostile power, and in doing so, makes himself known. That's not just an Old Testament plot device — it's the shape of the gospel itself. Paul tells the Romans that God raised up Pharaoh "for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth" ( Romans 9:17) — quoting almost this exact logic straight out of Exodus.

Now look at the cross through this lens. At the cross, God stretches out his hand again — not against Egypt, but against sin and death themselves, and not through someone else's suffering but through his own Son's. Jesus becomes the one on whom judgment falls so that a people enslaved — not to Pharaoh, but to sin — can be brought out "from among" the world and into freedom. Colossians 2:15 says God, through the cross, "disarmed the powers and authorities" and "made a public spectacle of them" — that's exodus language, plague language, applied to Calvary.

And the goal is the same too: that people would know. John's Gospel calls the cross Jesus' "glorification" — the moment where, like the plagues, God's identity gets undeniably displayed for everyone watching, friend and enemy alike ( John 12:23-32, 17:1-3). The exodus was a preview in miniature of a much bigger rescue — one Pharaoh, one nation, one plague-scarred deliverance pointing toward the day when God would deliver, at far greater cost to himself, people out of every nation, not just Israel. When Jesus stands before the true rulers of this age at his own trial and death, he's still doing what Moses' God promised in this verse: acting so that people, watching, would finally know who he is.

Here's the uncomfortable part: God doesn't say "so that Egypt will like me" or "so that Egypt will feel warmly toward me." He says "so that Egypt will know" — and the way they come to know him is through ten waves of judgment that cost Egypt everything, right down to their firstborn sons. God's self-revelation, in this verse, is not gentle. It's devastating.

That should sober you before it comforts you. You probably want a God who reveals himself in sunsets and answered prayers and warm feelings in worship. Sometimes that's exactly how he shows up. But this verse says something else is true too: sometimes God makes himself known by tearing down whatever you've built your life on instead of him — your career, your image, your control, your idols, however respectable they look. Pharaoh's Egypt thought it was untouchable. It wasn't.

So ask yourself honestly: is there a "Pharaoh" in your own life — some system, habit, relationship, or self-image you've let rule you the way Egypt ruled Israel? God's pattern hasn't changed. He still stretches out his hand, still disrupts, still insists on being known as he actually is rather than how you'd prefer to imagine him. The cost of that disruption is real — ask the Egyptians, ask Pharaoh's household. But so is the freedom on the other side of it — ask Israel, standing on the far shore of the Red Sea.

Don't rush past the fact that this whole terrifying process exists for a relational purpose: that they will know. God isn't cruel for its own sake. He wants to be known — truly known, not politely tolerated. That's what he wants from you too. Not a vague respect. Recognition. Let him be exactly who he says he is, even where that costs you something.

• Lord, show me where I've settled for a vague idea of you instead of really knowing you — the way Egypt was forced to know you, undeniably.
• God, I confess the "Pharaohs" in my own life — the things I let rule me instead of you. Break my grip on them, even if it costs me.
• Thank you that you rescue "from the midst" — that you don't leave people trapped in systems of bondage, but reach in and pull them out.
• Help me see the cross as your hand stretched out again, this time to rescue me rather than judge me, and let that truth land, not just as information but as experience.
• Give me courage, like Moses, to speak your name plainly to people and powers that don't want to hear it.

• What would it look like for you to know God the way this verse describes — not just know facts about him, but know him through experience, even hard experience?
• Is there a system, habit, or relationship in your life functioning like "Egypt" — something you're embedded in that God might need to pull you "out of the midst of"?
• When has God's self-revelation in your life felt more like disruption than comfort? How did you respond?
• Do you want God to be known as he actually is, or do you quietly prefer a smaller, tamer version of him?
• Where in your life is God asking you to trust his declared outcome before you can see any evidence of it — the way Moses had to trust this promise before a single plague had happened?
