Exodus 4:6

Look at what's happening here. God is loading Moses up with proof. Moses has just said, in effect, "What if they don't believe me?" ( Exodus 4:1). So God gives him three signs to carry into Egypt, and this is the second one. The first sign — the staff turning into a snake — happened outside his body. This one happens inside his own skin. God tells him to tuck his hand into the fold of his robe, against his chest, and when he pulls it out, it's diseased — "white as snow."

Notice the direction of the miracle. The first sign showed God's power over the created world. This second sign shows God's power over Moses himself, over the human body, over life and death in a person's own flesh. And don't miss the gentle warning buried in it: the disease appears the moment his hand goes against his heart and comes back out. It's a picture, almost, of what's hidden inside a person being suddenly exposed.

The phrase "white as snow" matters more than it looks. Two other times in the Bible a hand or body turns "leprous, white as snow," and both are acts of judgment — Miriam, struck for grumbling against Moses ( Numbers 12:10), and Gehazi, struck for greed ( 2 Kings 5:27). So this sign isn't just a magic trick. It carries the smell of God's holiness and His power to strike — and then, in the next verse, to heal.

One honest note: the Hebrew word usually rendered "leprosy" doesn't really mean the modern disease we call leprosy (Hansen's disease). It covers a range of contagious, disfiguring skin conditions that made a person ceremonially "unclean" and cut off from the camp Tyndale.

This scene sits at the burning bush, somewhere out in the wilderness near Mount Horeb, roughly in the 1400s–1200s BC (scholars argue the exact date). Moses is an eighty-year-old fugitive shepherd. Forty years earlier he'd killed an Egyptian and fled Pharaoh's death sentence; now God is sending him back to confront the most powerful empire on earth and pull a slave nation out of it.

To feel the weight of this particular sign, you have to know how the ancient world saw skin disease. A spreading, scaly, whitening skin condition was terrifying — contagious, untreatable, and in Israel's law it made you "unclean." That meant you were put outside the camp, away from your family, away from worship, living a kind of social death until (if ever) you healed ( Leviticus 13–14 lays out the whole grim procedure). So when Moses pulls out a hand "white as snow," anyone watching would recoil. This is the body of a dead man walking.

That's why God's choice of this sign is so pointed for the people he's sending Moses to. The Israelites in Egypt were the despised, the untouchable, the cast-out slaves of the Nile delta — and Moses is going to tell them God can take what is diseased and dead and make it whole again, in an instant. The sign is the message about the nation itself.

This chapter is the hinge where Moses' long resistance finally cracks and the rescue of Israel actually begins to move Matthew Henry. These three signs are God patiently dismantling the excuses of a man who really, really doesn't want the job.

The word for the disease is the verb צָרַע (tsâraʻ, H6879) — "to be struck with leprosy," literally something like "to be scourged" Strong's. That's worth sitting with: the language treats the condition not as random bad luck but as a blow, a striking, something that comes down on a person. The same root sits behind Miriam's and Gehazi's judgment.

Then שֶׁלֶג (sheleg, H7950), "snow," named probably for its whiteness Strong's. In a desert land, snow is rare and startling — pure, blinding white. Here it describes not beauty but disease, the bleached pallor of dead, flaking skin.

Notice where the hand goes: into the חֵיק (chêyq, H2436), the "bosom" — the fold of the robe against the chest, close to the heart Strong's. The hand that does your work, that wields power, is the יָד (yâd, H3027), and the open hand specifically pictures power and action Strong's. So the hand of power goes into the place over the heart and comes out struck. There's a quiet poetry there: what's near your heart, brought into the light, is exposed for what it is — and God alone can heal it.

Hold onto that image: a hand that brings death-disease out, and then — in the very next verse — brings it back whole. God strikes and God heals. That two-beat rhythm runs straight to Jesus.

Because here's the difference. In Israel's law, uncleanness was contagious one direction: touch a leper and you became unclean, not the other way around. Disease spread; health didn't. But when a leprous man came to Jesus and said, "If you are willing, you can make me clean," Jesus did the unthinkable — He reached out and touched him, and the man was cleansed ( Mark 1:40–42). The flow ran backwards. Cleanness moved from Jesus into the diseased man. What Moses' hand only pictured — God's power to take the unclean and make it whole — Jesus did with His own skin, by contact, on purpose.

And there's a deeper layer. Moses had to put his hand in to take the disease out. Jesus didn't just heal disease; He took the uncleanness into Himself. He became the one struck — the Hebrew word for the disease means "to be scourged," and Jesus was literally scourged, "stricken, smitten by God" ( Isaiah 53:4) so that by His wounds we'd be healed. The sign in Moses' hand says God can reverse what death has done to us. The cross says He did it by absorbing the blow Himself.

So when you read this little miracle, don't file it under "Old Testament curiosities." It's an early sketch of the Healer who would one day let the unclean cling to Him so that the clean could cling to us.

God told Moses to put his hand against his chest — and what came out was diseased. I think there's something here you can't dodge. The thing closest to your heart, when it's finally pulled into the open, isn't always pretty. We carry hidden things "in the bosom": the resentment, the lust, the quiet contempt, the self-protection we've never named out loud. We keep them tucked away precisely because we're afraid of how they'd look in the light.

This sign tells you two things at once, and you need both. First: yes, it really is that bad. The disease is real, contagious, deadly, the kind of thing that gets you put outside the camp. Don't minimize what's in your chest. But second — and this is the whole point of the sign — the same God who exposes it can heal it instantly. Moses puts the hand back in, pulls it out, and it's "restored like the rest of his flesh" ( Exodus 4:7).

So here's the cost. The healing comes after the exposure, not instead of it. You don't get the restored hand without first pulling the diseased one into the light. That means honesty before God that you've been avoiding for years — saying the actual thing, naming it, not the cleaned-up version. It's humiliating. It feels like dying a little. And it's the only door to being made whole.

Moses doubted he was the man for the job. You may doubt you're the kind of person God could clean up. The sign answers both. God doesn't need you to be impressive. He needs you to bring Him your hand.

• Lord, You see what I keep tucked against my heart — the things I'm afraid to pull into the light. Give me the courage to bring them out before You today.
• Thank You that the same hand that exposes my disease can heal it in a moment. I trust Your power to make me whole.
• Jesus, You touched the unclean instead of recoiling. Touch the parts of me I think are untouchable.
• Like Moses, I make excuses about who I am and what I can do. Forgive my unbelief, and let Your power be enough where I am weak.
• Help me not to minimize my sin or despair over it, but to hold both: how serious it is, and how strong Your mercy is.

• What is the thing closest to your heart that you would least want pulled out into the open? Why have you kept it hidden?
• Do you find it harder to believe your sin is really that serious, or that God could really heal it instantly? What does that reveal?
• Moses needed signs because he didn't believe God could use him. Where are you secretly disqualifying yourself from what God is calling you to?
• Jesus touched the leper. Is there someone "unclean" — awkward, shameful, cast-out — that you've kept at arm's length, where He's asking you to reach out instead?
• When God exposes something in you, do you run from Him or toward Him? What would it look like to bring the diseased hand back to be healed?
