Exodus 37:7

Look at what's actually happening on the page: a craftsman named Bezalel is making two winged figures — cherubim — out of gold, and they sit at the two ends of the "mercy seat," the lid of the ark of the covenant. That's it, plainly. But notice three things easy to miss.

First, this whole chapter is a repeat. Back in Exodus 25, God gave the blueprint. Now in chapter 37 the work is actually done — same details, past tense. The point of the repetition is obedience: what God commanded, Bezalel built, down to the letter. Israel didn't improvise worship; they matched the pattern exactly.

Second, the gold is "hammered" — beaten out of a single piece with the lid itself Strong's. The cherubim aren't bolted on. They rise up out of the mercy seat, one continuous piece of gold. The guardians and the place of mercy are inseparable.

Third — and this is the heart of it — the "mercy seat" is the lid over the box holding the Ten Commandments, the broken law of God. Once a year the high priest sprinkled blood on this lid. So you have God's holy law inside, and the covering of mercy on top, and two angels bending over it, watching. The cherubim first show up in Genesis 3:24 guarding Eden's gate with a flaming sword — keeping sinners out. Here, the same creatures bow over the one spot where God said He would meet sinful people. Christians across traditions read this the same way: the tabernacle furniture is a picture, and the cherubim are the angels who, Scripture says, long to look into the mystery of redemption ( 1 Peter 1:12).

Picture a people freshly out of slavery. Around 1446–1250 BC (scholars argue the exact date), Israel is camped in the Sinai desert, tents as far as you can see, no temple, no homeland — just a crowd of former brick-makers who watched Egypt collapse behind them. God has come down on the mountain, and now He wants to stay with them, to travel in their midst. So He commissions a tent — the tabernacle — that can be packed up and carried.

The materials came from the Egyptians' own gold, handed over as Israel left ( Exodus 12:35–36). So the very treasure of their captors becomes the metal that covers the throne of the God who freed them.

The ark and its lid sat in the innermost room, the Most Holy Place, behind a curtain no ordinary person could pass. This was the address of God's presence on earth. In the ancient world, kings sat enthroned above carved winged creatures; a throne room announced who ruled. Israel's neighbors filled such spaces with idols you could see. Israel's held an empty space above the lid — no image of God, only the two angels bowed over the seat where His presence hovered learn.ligonier.org. That's why the Psalms address Him as the One "enthroned between the cherubim" ( Psalm 80:1). The tabernacle was, in effect, a scale model of heaven's own throne room, pitched in the sand so a wandering people could know their God lived with them.

The verse opens with עָשָׂה (ʻâsâh, H6213) — "he made" — the plainest verb for doing or making Strong's. It's the same word that drums through Genesis 1: God made. Now a Spirit-filled craftsman makes, echoing his Maker.

כְּרוּב (kᵉrûwb, H3742) is "cherub" — a winged heavenly creature, the guardians of God's throne Strong's. Forget chubby Valentine babies; these are the fierce sentinels of Eden's gate and Ezekiel's fiery visions ( Ezekiel 10:2).

The word for how they were made is מִקְשָׁה (miqshâh, H4749) — "hammered work," metal beaten and shaped by pounding, what artists call repoussé Strong's. These angels were forced into being under a hammer, worked out of the same slab as the lid.

That lid is כַּפֹּרֶת (kappôreth, H3727), translated "mercy seat" — literally "a covering," and it comes from the root כָּפַר (kâphar), meaning to cover over, to wipe away, to atone Strong's. This is the family of words behind "Day of Atonement." So the "mercy seat" is really the "covering-place" — the spot where sin gets covered by blood. And the gold, זָהָב (zâhâb, H2091), is named from a root meaning to shimmer Strong's — the whole throne glows.

Here is where this golden lid stops being furniture and becomes the gospel in miniature.

The New Testament reaches back and grabs this exact object. In Romans 3:25, Paul says God put Jesus forward as a "propitiation" — and the Greek word he uses, hilastērion, is the very word the Greek Old Testament used for this mercy seat. Paul is saying: Jesus is the mercy seat. The place where God's broken law and God's mercy meet, where blood is sprinkled and wrath is covered — that place is no longer a gold lid in a tent. It's a Person on a cross.

Think about what that does to the cherubim. In Eden they guarded the way to God with a flaming sword, keeping sinners out. Over the ark, they bow toward the blood-covered seat, gazing at mercy. And on Easter morning, when Mary Magdalene stooped to look inside the empty tomb, she saw two angels — one where Jesus' head had lain, one where His feet had been ( John 20:12), sitting at the two ends of the place where the body rested desiringgod.org. The living echo of the two golden cherubim, framing the true mercy seat: the spot where the Lamb's blood was finally, fully poured out.

Peter says the angels long to look into these things ( 1 Peter 1:12) — the same posture as those hammered figures, heads bent, staring at redemption they can't stop marveling at learn.ligonier.org. The mercy seat was always pointing here. God wasn't decorating a box. He was drawing the shape of the cross a thousand years early, and setting angels around it to watch.

You probably skim verses like this. Furniture. Measurements. Gold. Move along.

But stop at the cherubim's posture. Two heavenly beings, whose faces once turned outward with a sword, now bend down over a lid, unable to look away from where mercy happens. If angels — who never sinned, who don't need the blood — can't tear their eyes off the place of atonement, what does it say about you, when you can walk past the cross of Jesus with a shrug?

The mercy seat asks you a hard question about your imagination. When you sin, where does your mind run? Some of us run to hiding — cover it up, hope God didn't notice, act like the law inside the box doesn't exist. Others run to despair — the law is broken, I'm finished, God is done with me. The mercy seat kills both lies. The broken commandments are real, right there under the lid. And so is the covering of blood, right on top. God did not pretend the law away, and He did not leave you exposed to it. He covered it.

The cost this asks of you is your casualness. You cannot treat what cost Christ His blood as background noise. This week, when you sin, don't hide and don't spiral — come to the mercy seat. Name it honestly. Then look at the covering, the blood of Jesus, and stay there long enough to let the wonder land — long enough to look the way the angels look. Worship that isn't amazed isn't really worship.

• Father, thank You that You did not leave Your broken law uncovered, but placed mercy over it in the blood of Jesus — teach me to run there and not away.
• Lord, forgive me for the times I've walked past the cross casually, treating as small what cost You everything.
• Give me the posture of the cherubim — bent low, eyes fixed, unable to look away from Your redeeming love.
• Jesus, You are my mercy seat; when I feel exposed by my own sin, let me remember that Your blood is the covering, not my hiding.
• Make my worship amazed again, God — stir wonder in me that even the angels feel.

• When I sin, do I instinctively hide, despair, or come to the mercy seat? What does my instinct reveal about what I really believe about God?
• The angels can't look away from redemption. When was the last time the cross genuinely astonished me — and if it's been a while, why?
• Bezalel built exactly what God commanded, down to the detail. Where am I improvising my own version of worship instead of receiving what God has given?
• The mercy seat sat right on top of the broken law. Am I trying to get to God by keeping the law, or by trusting the covering of Christ's blood over it?
• If I truly believed Jesus is the place where God's justice and mercy meet, what would change about how I carry my guilt this week?
