Exodus 23:25

Look at the shape of this sentence: "you shall serve... and He will bless... and I will take away." It's not a bargain between equals — it's a promise wrapped around a command. God has just spent verses 20-24 promising to send an angel ahead of Israel to guard them and lead them into the land, on the condition that they don't bow down to the gods of the peoples living there. Verse 25 is the flip side of that same coin: serve me, and watch what I do with your table and your health.

The plain reading is almost domestic — bread and water, the most basic staples of daily survival, not luxury or glory. God isn't promising chariots and gold here. He's promising that the food on your plate and the water in your cup will actually nourish you, and that sickness — a very real, very physical threat in a world with no hospitals — will be kept at bay Adam Clarke. That's the easy-to-miss part: this is a verse about the ordinary stuff of life, not the dramatic stuff. God's covenant care shows up in whether your bread fills you or your water poisons you.

This sits at the tail end of the "Book of the Covenant" ( Exodus 20:22–23:33), the law code Moses received right after the Ten Commandments, before Israel formally ratifies the covenant in chapter 24. It's covenant blessing language — the same pattern echoed almost word-for-word back in Exodus 15:26, right after the bitter waters of Marah were made sweet, and forward in Deuteronomy 7:12-15.

Where Christians disagree: does this promise still apply directly to believers today — "serve God and you won't get sick" — or was it a specific covenant arrangement tied to Israel's national life in the land, later reinterpreted through suffering, the cross, and ultimate healing in the resurrection? That question sits underneath a lot of modern debates about health, wealth, and prayer for the sick.

This verse comes from the early chapters of Exodus, traditionally attributed to Moses, addressed to the Israelites camped at the base of Mount Sinai sometime in the mid-to-late 1400s BC or 1200s BC (scholars land in different centuries depending on how they read the numbers in 1 Kings 6:1 and the archaeology of Canaan). Whatever the exact date, the audience is a people who have just walked out of four hundred years of slavery in Egypt and have zero infrastructure — no king, no temple, no settled land, no army to speak of.

Picture their situation: they're a few months removed from watching the Nile turn to blood and the firstborn of Egypt die, they've crossed the Red Sea on dry ground, and now they're camped in a desert with no natural water source and no farmland. Their entire survival — literally their bread and their water — depends on God showing up daily with manna and springs. Egypt, the world they just left, was famous in the ancient world for its diseases (this is likely part of why Deuteronomy 7:15 specifically promises Israel will be spared "the diseases you knew in Egypt" — Egyptian medical texts from this era catalog an enormous range of ailments, and Egyptian doctors were sought out across the region precisely because disease was so common there).

So when God says "I will bless your bread and water and take away sickness," he's speaking directly into their felt vulnerability. This isn't abstract theology to them; it's the difference between eating today and starving, between health and the plagues they just watched fall on their former captors. This promise comes right before God tells them he'll drive out the nations of Canaan ahead of them ( Exodus 23:27-31) — so the whole passage is God saying: trust me for the conquest, and trust me for your dinner table.

The verb translated "serve" is עָבַד (ʻâbad, H5647) — a word that means plain hard work, the kind of labor a servant does for a master, or a farmer does with soil Strong's. It's the same root used for slavery in Egypt (Israel "served" Pharaoh) and for temple worship. That overlap matters: the word doesn't distinguish between "religious devotion" and "manual labor" the way we might. To serve Yahweh means to belong to him the way your whole life belonged to your master in slavery — except now the master is good.

בָרַךְ (bârak, H1288) is "bless" — its root picture is kneeling, as in bending the knee Strong's. When God blesses your bread, he's the one bending toward you in favor; blessing isn't a magic force, it's God's personal, kneeling-close attention landing on your food supply.

מַחֲלֶה (machăleh, H4245), "sickness," comes from a root meaning to be weak or worn out Strong's. And the verb for "take away" is סוּר (çûwr, H5493) — literally "to turn aside" or remove, the same word used elsewhere for turning away from idols. God isn't just numbing symptoms; he's turning the sickness itself off your path, out of your midst (קֶרֶב, qereb, H7130 — literally "the center, the inward parts" Strong's).

Notice too: the covenant name יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) paired with אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430) — "the LORD your God." It's the personal, self-existent covenant God, not a generic deity, who is making this promise Strong's.

This verse sets up a pattern that runs the whole length of Scripture and lands, hard, on Jesus. God promising bread, water, and freedom from sickness to a covenant people who serve him rightly is a preview — a small-scale sketch — of what the Gospels show us in full color. When Jesus feeds five thousand people with bread by the Sea of Galilee ( John 6), or tells the Samaritan woman he offers "living water" so she'll never thirst again ( John 4:14), or walks through Galilee healing "every disease and every sickness" ( Matthew 4:23), he's not doing something new out of nowhere. He's stepping into exactly the promise of Exodus 23:25 and fulfilling it in a body, in real time, on real dusty roads.

But here's the honest part: Jesus didn't abolish sickness from the earth the way Exodus 23:25 seems to promise for Israel in the land. People he healed eventually died of something else. What he did was point past physical healing to a bigger rescue — he is the one who ultimately deals with sin, of which sickness was always a symptom in a broken world. Isaiah 33:24 ties "no one will say I am sick" directly to being "forgiven of iniquity" — sickness and sin are bound together in the biblical imagination, and Jesus goes after the root, not just the branch. Psalm 103:3 puts forgiveness of sin and healing of disease in the same breath, and that's the pattern Jesus embodies completely — he forgives the paralytic before he heals him ( Mark 2:5-12), on purpose, to show you which one is the deeper problem.

The full, final version of Exodus 23:25 — a people with God, no sickness, nothing broken — doesn't show up until Revelation 21:4, where death, mourning, crying, and pain are gone for good. That's the horizon this verse is quietly pointing toward, through Christ, all the way to the new creation.

Here's what makes this verse uncomfortable if you slow down: it doesn't say "believe in God and he'll bless your bread." It says serve. The Hebrew word is the same one used for slave labor Strong's. God isn't asking for a Sunday feeling. He's asking for your Monday — your actual hours, your actual obedience, your actual allegiance when no one's watching.

And notice what he's offering in return: not riches, not fame, not spiritual highs. Bread. Water. Ordinary health. It's almost embarrassingly small compared to what we usually ask God for. But maybe that's the point. Maybe you've been so busy asking God for the extraordinary that you've stopped noticing he's the reason your body still works, your fridge still has food in it, your tap still runs clean.
