Exodus 23:14

Look at what God actually says here: "Three times a year you are to celebrate a feast to Me." Notice that last word. This isn't just a party or a harvest festival — it's a feast held for God, before His face. Three times every year the whole nation was to stop, travel, and gather around God's presence.

The three feasts get named a few verses later and spelled out fully in Leviticus 23: the Feast of Unleavened Bread (tied to Passover, remembering the escape from Egypt), the Feast of Weeks (the wheat harvest, later called Pentecost), and the Feast of Tabernacles (the fall harvest, remembering the years living in tents in the wilderness). One remembers rescue, one celebrates provision, one recalls God's care in the wild.

Here's something easy to miss. The word translated "celebrate a feast" literally pictures moving in a circle, marching in a sacred procession Strong's. This wasn't grim duty. It was dancing, singing, feasting joy — but joy aimed at God.

And there's a quiet strategy underneath it. By commanding everyone to gather at one central place three times a year, God was knitting a scattered people into one family and guarding them from drifting off to build their own little local shrines that would soon fill up with the neighboring gods Tyndale. Sadly, Israel didn't keep this well — 2 Kings 23:21-23 records a Passover under King Josiah unlike any in centuries, meaning generations had let it lapse.

Where the parallel in Exodus 23:17 says "all your males," this verse simply says "you" — the whole household is drawn in, even if the men bore the formal duty to appear.

Picture Israel here: a freshly freed slave-people, camped at the foot of Mount Sinai around 1446 BC (or, by another common dating, the 1200s BC), still shaking the dust of Egypt off their feet. They'd never governed themselves. They'd worshiped for generations surrounded by Egypt's gods. Now God is handing them not just the Ten Commandments but a whole way of life — and this verse sits inside that stretch of laws ( Exodus 20–23) that spells out how a covenant people lives.

At this moment the command was easy: everyone was already camped in a ring around the Tabernacle, God's tent in the middle of the camp. But this law was written for later — for when they'd be spread out across farms and villages in the promised land, tempted to just worship at whatever hilltop shrine was closest Tyndale. So three times a year, drop your tools, pack up, and walk — sometimes for days — to the central sanctuary, later the Temple in Jerusalem.

That walk mattered. To leave your farm and flocks undefended and travel to a feast was a real risk — bandits, enemies, an unguarded home desiringgod.org. Yet God attaches a stunning promise nearby ( Exodus 34:24): while you're away worshiping Me, no one will even covet your land. The command to worship became a training ground in trust.

And notice how earthy these feasts were — they ran on the farming calendar, tied to barley, wheat, and the fall ingathering. God wove remembering Him right into the seasons of ordinary working life, so that plowing and harvesting themselves became reminders of who fed them.

Three words carry this verse.

שָׁלוֹשׁ (shâlôwsh, H7969) — "three." A plain number, but here it sets a rhythm: three fixed points every year where life bends back toward God Strong's.

רֶגֶל (regel, H7272) — literally "a foot," the foot you walk on, and by extension "a step" or an "occasion" Strong's. So the phrase "three times" is really "three foot-times" — three treks, three pilgrimages on actual feet. The language itself remembers that worship here meant getting up and walking.

חָגַג (châgag, H2287) — the verb for "celebrate a feast." This is the richest one. Its root picture is moving in a circle — to march in a sacred procession, to dance, even to be giddy with celebration Strong's. It's the same root behind the Arabic hajj, the pilgrimage. So "celebrate a feast to Me" isn't a somber instruction to attend a service. It's closer to: come and throw a holy party in My honor — sing, march, feast, be almost dizzy with gladness — but aim all of it at Me.

Put the three together and you can feel the design: three times a year, on your own feet, come dance before your God.

Every one of these three feasts turns out to be pointing at Jesus, like three arrows all landing in the same person.

Passover / Unleavened Bread — Jesus was crucified at Passover, and Paul says it flat out: "Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" ( 1 Corinthians 5:7). The lamb whose blood spared Israel from death was always a picture of Him.

The Feast of Weeks (Pentecost) — this was the harvest feast, and it's exactly when God poured out the Holy Spirit in Acts 2. The feast that celebrated bringing in the first grain became the day God brought in the first great harvest of souls, launching the mission to the whole world desiringgod.org. The old festival was rehearsing a day it couldn't yet see.

Tabernacles — the feast of living in tents, remembering God dwelling with His people in the wilderness. John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and "tabernacled" among us — literally pitched His tent among us. And Revelation 21:3 promises the day this feast finally comes true forever: "the dwelling place of God is with man."

So this command to appear before God three times a year was never really about the calendar. It was God building His people's whole year around gathering to His presence — and Jesus is the one who makes that gathering permanent. Hebrews 10:19-22 says we don't wait for three pilgrimages a year anymore; because of His blood we can walk into God's presence now, any hour, with confidence. The three foot-journeys have become one open door that never shuts.

Here's the thing that should stop you: God commanded His people to celebrate. He didn't just permit joy — He required it, three times a year, on the calendar, non-negotiable. We tend to think of God as the one who commands duty and forbids fun. But the very word here is a word for dancing, for being almost dizzy with gladness Strong's. God ordered a party.

So ask yourself honestly: is there any rhythm of joy in your life aimed at God? Israel couldn't just feel grateful whenever the mood struck. They built it into the year — fixed times when everything stopped and life pointed home. You and I are much better at building rhythms around work deadlines and streaming schedules than around God's presence.

And notice the cost, because there always is one. To go to the feast, an Israelite had to leave. Leave the farm unguarded. Leave the harvest half-watched. Walk away from the very things his security depended on, and trust God to keep them desiringgod.org. That's the cost this verse asks of you too. Worship that costs nothing isn't really worship — it's leftovers. Real celebration before God means you actually stop the machine. You take the day. You leave the work undone and the phone in the drawer and the anxieties untended, and you trust that the God who asked for your attention can hold your world while you give it to Him.

What would it cost you this week to actually stop and feast before God — not squeeze Him into the margins, but clear the center of a day and be giddy with gratitude to His face? Do that. He commanded it. And He meant it as a gift.

• Lord, You commanded joy — teach me to actually celebrate before You, not just serve You out of grim duty.
• Show me where my week has no rhythm of turning toward You, and help me build one that I keep.
• Give me the trust of the pilgrim who leaves everything undefended to come to Your presence — help me believe You can hold my life while I give You my attention.
• Thank You that in Jesus, my Passover Lamb, the door into Your presence never closes — help me walk through it today.
• Make me one of the harvest You gathered at Pentecost, and send me out as a witness of Your rescue.
