Exodus 19:15

Look at what Moses actually tells the people here. It's the last piece of a three-day countdown. God is about to descend on the mountain in fire and smoke, and Moses passes along the instructions: get ready, and — this is the part that catches you off guard — don't go near your wife.

On the surface it sounds odd, maybe even a little embarrassing, tucked into this grand moment. But it's not random. This whole chapter is about getting a people ready to stand in the presence of a holy God without being destroyed. In verses 10–11 God tells Moses to have them wash their clothes and be ready "by the third day." Verse 15 is Moses filling in one more detail of what "consecrate yourselves" means in practice.

The command isn't saying marriage or sex is dirty. Nowhere does the Bible treat the marriage bed as shameful. What it's saying is: for these three days, even good and normal things get set aside, because something greater is happening. This is total focus. Everything — even the most intimate, ordinary parts of your life — is being pulled to attention because God himself is coming down.

Here's what's easy to miss. The Hebrew word behind "draw near" is the same word used for approaching God to worship. So there's a quiet echo: you don't draw near to your spouse right now because you're about to draw near to God. One approach is being cleared away to make room for the greater one.

One honest note: some readers wince that the command is addressed to the men ("do not draw near to a woman") — a reminder that this text speaks first to its own time and place, even as its heart, undivided readiness for God, reaches straight to us.

Picture where these people are. They've been slaves in Egypt for generations — brick-making, whip-driven, no say over their own bodies or time. Then, roughly in the 1400s–1200s BC (scholars argue the exact date), God cracks Egypt open with plagues, splits a sea, and marches them out into the desert of Sinai. About three months into that journey they arrive at the mountain, and now God says: I'm going to come down and speak to you directly.

That's the setting for this instruction. In the ancient world, approaching a god was terrifying and dangerous — you didn't just stroll up. Every culture around Israel had elaborate rituals for making yourself fit to stand before the divine. So when Moses tells the people to wash their clothes and abstain from marital relations, he's speaking a language they already understood: you don't come into the presence of the holy carelessly.

Why sex specifically? In the ritual laws that come later ( Leviticus 15), the normal fluids of married life made a person temporarily "unclean" — not sinful, just not ready to enter sacred space until they'd washed and waited. So the instruction here is about ceremonial readiness, a whole-person purity for the biggest meeting in their history.

There's also a picture of undivided attention. These people are about to receive the Ten Commandments and become God's covenant nation — the terms of a whole new relationship. Later prophets echo this same instinct: in Joel 2:16 even the newlywed bridegroom leaves his room when God's people gather to seek him. Some moments are so weighty that ordinary life pauses and everyone turns to face the same direction.

The word doing the heavy lifting is נָגַשׁ (nâgash, H5066) — "to draw near." It's a rich, flexible word: it can mean approaching for any reason, but it's specifically used for coming near to worship God — and, gently, as a polite way of saying to be intimate with a woman Strong's. That double meaning is the whole point. The same act of "drawing near" that describes worship is being redirected: pull back from the one approach, so you're ready for the greater one.

Then there's כּוּן (kûwn, H3559), behind "be prepared." Its root idea is to stand upright, be set firmly in place, established Strong's. This isn't a casual "get ready-ish." It's the picture of something built solid and fixed, made stable enough to bear weight. God is asking them to become people who can stand firm when the mountain shakes.

And שָׁלוֹשׁ (shâlôwsh, H7969) — "three," the third day Strong's. In the Bible the third day keeps showing up as the moment God acts, the moment everything turns. Hold that number; it comes back at the most important sunrise in history.

Notice too the plain word עַם (ʻam, H5971) — "the people," a congregated unit, a flock gathered together Strong's. This isn't a private readiness. It's a whole community, together, turning to face the same holy God.

Here's where that little word "three" starts to glow. Israel prepares three days to meet God on a mountain wrapped in fire — a meeting so overwhelming that a fence has to be built to keep people from touching the mountain and dying. The holiness of God at Sinai is lethal. You can't just walk up.

Now jump forward. The whole New Testament writes another third-day story: "He was buried, and He was raised on the third day" ( 1 Corinthians 15:4). The pattern God set in the desert — three days, then he acts, then everything changes — comes to a head at an empty tomb. At Sinai the people prepared themselves and still couldn't approach. At the resurrection, Jesus did the approaching for us.

The book of Hebrews makes the contrast directly: "You have not come to a mountain that can be touched and that is burning with fire… but you have come to Mount Zion… to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant" ( Hebrews 12:18–24). Everything Sinai demanded — the washing, the readiness, the standing-firm before a holy God — Jesus supplies. He is the clean garment. He is the one who makes you fit to draw near.

So the very command that once kept people at a careful distance now points to the One who tore the distance down. The prophet asked, "Who can endure the day of His coming?" ( Malachi 3:2). The answer, it turns out, is: anyone hidden in Christ. You get to draw near — not because you scrubbed hard enough, but because he made you ready.

Sit with the strangeness of this for a second. God tells a whole nation to set aside even the good, normal, God-given intimacy of marriage — for three days — because meeting him deserves their undivided attention.

We flinch at that, don't we? We've quietly decided that God should fit into the cracks of our lives. He gets the leftover minutes, the tired prayers before sleep, the half-attention while we scroll. The idea that anything good in our lives might need to pause so we can focus fully on God feels almost offensive to us.

But that's exactly the nerve this verse touches. It's not saying marriage is bad. It's saying there are seasons where God is worth clearing the table for. Worth putting even legitimate pleasures on hold. When you fast, when you set aside a day, when you turn off the phone and get quiet — you're doing what Israel did at the base of that mountain. You're saying with your body: God, you're worth my full attention.

Here's the cost this verse asks of you. Name the good thing you use to keep God at a comfortable distance — the entertainment, the busyness, even a relationship. Not because it's sinful, but because you've never once paused it for him. This week, pause it. Pick a day, a meal, an evening. Draw back from something good so you can draw near to Someone better.

And notice the mercy underneath the demand: God told them he was coming. He gave them three days' warning. He always makes a way for you to get ready. The holy God who could not be touched came down. He still does. The only question is whether you'll clear the room.

• Lord, you are worth my full, undivided attention — forgive me for the leftover minutes and the half-hearted prayers, and teach me to clear the table for you.
• Show me the good things in my life that I've quietly used to keep you at a safe distance, and give me the courage to set them aside for a season.
• Thank you that I no longer stand trembling at the foot of a burning mountain, but come near through Jesus who made me clean.
• Make me established, set firm on my feet, able to stand when everything around me shakes.
• On the third day you raised your Son — help me live as someone who knows that meeting you is the most serious and joyful thing in my whole life.

• What good, legitimate thing in my life have I never once been willing to pause for God? What does that reveal about where he actually ranks?
• Do I approach God carelessly, as if his holiness were no big deal — or has the wonder of "drawing near" grown dull in me?
• When was the last time I set anything aside — a meal, a habit, a pleasure — purely to give God my full attention? What stops me?
• Israel got three days' warning to prepare. If God told me he was coming to meet me in three days, what in my life would I want to make right first — and why am I not making it right now?
• Do I really believe Jesus made me fit to draw near, or am I still, deep down, trying to scrub myself clean enough to be accepted?
