Joel 1:4

Read this verse slowly and you'll feel the hammer blows land one after another. Four different words for locust, four waves of destruction, each one finishing off what the last one started. Nothing is left. That's the whole point of the sentence structure — it's built like a machine designed to leave zero survivors: the devouring locust eats, then whatever it missed, the swarming locust gets, then whatever that missed, the young locust gets, then whatever's left after all three, the destroying locust finishes. This is total, systematic, exhaustive ruin.

The easy thing to miss is that this isn't really a verse about entomology. Joel isn't writing a nature documentary. He's writing a funeral dirge for a country. Everyone in his audience farmed or depended on farmers — this is their food, their income, their wine for celebrations, their whole economy, gone in successive waves. Commentators have argued for a long time about whether these four Hebrew words name four separate insect species, or four stages of the same locust's life cycle (egg to nymph to hopper to winged adult), or whether Joel is using four words almost like four synonyms just to pile up the sense of "everything, everything, everything is gone" Tyndale. Some older Jewish and Christian readers even took the four locusts as symbols of four empires that would successively crush Israel — Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome — each worse than the last Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Most careful readers today think that's reading too much in; the plain, devastating point is a real agricultural catastrophe Tyndale.

This verse opens the book. Everything that follows — the calls to weep, to fast, to tear your hearts and not just your clothes ( Joel 2:13) — hangs on this one image of total loss. Where you land on "symbol or literal bugs" doesn't actually change what Joel wants from you: to feel how empty the land, and by extension the people's hands, have become.

We don't know exactly when Joel preached — scholars have proposed dates anywhere from the 800s BC to after the Babylonian exile ended around 400s BC, because the book gives almost no political markers to pin it down. What we do know is the audience: farmers, vine-growers, priests, and elders in Judah, the southern kingdom centered on Jerusalem. This wasn't a wealthy trading empire — it was an agrarian society where your grain harvest and your wine and olive crop weren't just income, they were survival and they were how you worshiped, since grain and wine were poured out as offerings at the temple.

Picture it concretely: a locust swarm in the ancient world could be millions of insects thick enough to blot out the sun, stripping a field bare in hours, then moving on to strip the next one. Ancient writers outside the Bible describe swarms that took days to pass overhead. This wasn't a minor pest problem — it was an economic and religious emergency all at once, because when the grain and wine offerings stopped (which Joel will describe a few verses later, in Joel 1:9), it wasn't just that people went hungry. Worship at the temple itself ground to a halt.

This kind of disaster had deep roots in Israel's memory. Locusts were one of the plagues God sent on Egypt ( Exodus 10:4), and locust devastation shows up in Deuteronomy 28:38 as one of the curses for covenant unfaithfulness — the kind of thing that was supposed to make Israel ask, "Is God trying to tell us something?" So when Joel's audience saw their fields stripped bare four times over, they had a whole tradition telling them this wasn't random bad luck. It was the kind of thing a prophet stood up to interpret Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. Joel's job in this opening chapter is exactly that — to make sure nobody shrugs this off as just a bad year for farming.

Joel stacks up four Hebrew words for locust, and it's worth slowing down on them because their meanings hint at why he chose four instead of one Strong's.

גָּזָם (gazam, H1501) — "the devouring locust." Its root idea is just "to devour" — this word is basically named after what it does to a field. אַרְבֶּה (arbeh, H697) — "the swarming locust" — comes from a root meaning "to multiply, increase." This is the locust word most tied to sheer numbers; it's the one used for the Egyptian plague in Exodus 10:4. יֶלֶק (yeleq, H3218) — "the young locust" — its root means "to lick up," picturing something small and voracious licking a surface clean. חָסִיל (chasil, H2625) — "the destroying locust" — from a root meaning "to consume, finish off" — appropriately, this is the last one in Joel's list, the one that finishes the job Strong's.

Notice the verb tying them all together: אָכַל (akal, H398), "to eat," used four times over. Joel could have varied his verbs, but he doesn't — he wants the repetition. Eating, eating, eating, eating. And threaded through it is יֶתֶר (yether, H3499), "what remains, the leftover" — literally "what's left over" is used three times as the connector: what's left after locust one, locust two, locust three. The whole verse is built on the grammar of leftovers being consumed. There's nothing decorative about the vocabulary — every word serves the single idea of total, cascading loss.

There's no direct prophecy of Jesus tucked in this verse — don't force one. What's here instead is a pattern that runs the length of the whole Bible and comes to rest in him: God lets total, honest devastation be named and felt before he offers restoration. Joel doesn't rush past the wreckage. He makes his readers sit in the wasted fields for an entire chapter before any hope shows up. That's not cruelty — it's how real healing works. You can't skip grief and get to grace.

And here's where it gets striking: later in the same book, God promises "I will repay you for the years eaten by locusts" ( Joel 2:25) — using the exact same four words. The God who let the devouring happen is the same God who promises to pay back every single year those insects stole. That promise of restored years, restored harvest, restored joy, is a small, earthy preview of what the New Testament says happens fully in Christ. Paul talks about God making "all things new" ( Revelation 21:5, though that's John, not Paul — but the theme runs through both) and Peter talks about "times of refreshing" coming from the Lord ( Acts 3:19-20). The pattern is: ruin named honestly, then a Redeemer who doesn't just patch things up but repays what was actually lost.

Jesus himself stands in that gap. On the cross he absorbed the full, cascading weight of what sin devours in a life — nothing left, stripped bare, the very language of Psalm 22 that he quotes from the cross. And in his resurrection, he becomes God's guarantee that what's eaten away — your wasted years, your stripped fields, whatever locusts have gotten to in your life — will be repaid, not just replaced. Joel 1:4 is the wound. Joel 2:25, fulfilled ultimately in Christ, is the wage paid back for it.

You've probably had a Joel 1:4 season — where one loss doesn't just happen once, it comes in waves. The job falls through, then the diagnosis, then the relationship, then the thing you were counting on to hold everything together. What the first locust left, the second one ate. You know that rhythm.

Here's the hard thing this verse asks of you: don't minimize it, and don't skip it. Joel doesn't let his readers say "well, it's just bugs" or "it's just a bad harvest, we'll manage." He forces them to look straight at total loss and call it what it is before he lets them move one inch toward hope. That's costly, because it's so much easier to numb out, distract yourself, or slap a quick "God's got a plan" bandage over a wound that's still bleeding. Joel says: no. Grieve first. Tell the truth about what's actually gone.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty — the kind that doesn't rush to the tidy ending. If something has been stripped bare in your life, layer after layer, don't perform peace you don't feel. Bring the wasted field to God exactly as it looks. That's not weak faith; that's the beginning of the only kind of faith that can actually hold real grief and still trust a real God. And it's worth remembering, even here at the start, that the God who lets you feel the full weight of the locusts is the same God who, a chapter later, promises to repay the years they took.
