Hosea 13:14

Look closely at the shape of this verse, because it's actually two verses wrestling inside one. First half: God says he will ransom his people from Sheol (the grave, the shadowy realm of the dead) and redeem them from Death itself. That's a rescue promise, full stop — no conditions attached. Second half: he turns and taunts Death and Sheol like a warrior standing over a beaten enemy — "where are your plagues now? where's your sting?" And then the last line drops like a stone: "Compassion is hidden from my eyes."

Here's what's easy to miss: that last line completely flips the mood. If verses 14a-14c are a victory shout, 14d sounds like God saying he's done feeling sorry for Israel — he's moved past pity into judgment. This is why good, careful readers of this text land in different places. Some (like Keil-Delitzsch and John Gill) read the whole verse as a genuine promise of resurrection life, with the taunt aimed at death's defeat, and "compassion is hidden" meaning God won't relent from following through on this rescue — his mind is made up Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. Others (Tyndale's notes among them) read it almost the opposite way — God is summoning death and the grave against Israel because he's out of patience, and "compassion is hidden" means exactly what it says: no mercy left, at least not yet Tyndale.

Both readings can be defended from the Hebrew grammar — the verb tenses genuinely allow it. What's not in doubt is where this sits in Hosea's book: chapter 13 is the darkest chapter in the whole prophecy, a catalog of Israel's idolatry and coming collapse (13:1-13), and then this jagged, double-edged verse right before chapter 14 turns toward tender restoration. It's a hinge — judgment giving way, eventually, to hope.

Hosea preached in the northern kingdom of Israel sometime between about 750 and 725 BC, in the final decades before that kingdom fell. This was a kingdom eating itself alive — a rapid string of assassinated kings, alliances made and broken with Egypt and Assyria, and underneath all the political chaos, a religious rot: the people were worshiping Baal, the Canaanite storm-and-fertility god, right alongside (or instead of) the LORD, convinced that Baal was the one keeping their crops and herds alive.

Chapter 13 comes from the very edge of the cliff. The Assyrian empire, the superpower of the day, was closing in — and within a few years of Hosea's preaching, Assyria's armies did exactly what he warned: they crushed Samaria, the northern capital, in 722 BC and scattered the population, ending the northern kingdom for good. So when Hosea talks about death, the grave, and a nation with "no strength to give birth" (the image just before this verse, in 13:13), he's not being poetic for effect — he's describing a nation about to die politically, culturally, and in a very real, bodies-in-the-street sense.

Sheol, in the world Hosea's listeners knew, wasn't hell in the later Christian sense of eternal torment — it was just "the place of the dead," a shadowy, gray holding-place everyone went to, good and bad alike, with no clear hope of coming back out. That's what makes God's threat/promise here so startling either way you read it: he's talking about reaching into that place, or handing his people over to it, with total authority. No other god in the ancient world was imagined to have power over Sheol like that — it was the one border even the gods respected. Hosea's original audience would have felt the shock of a God who could talk to Death and Sheol like servants he could summon or dismiss.

The two rescue verbs matter enormously. פָּדָה (pâdâh, H6299) means to buy back, to pay a price to release someone — think of ransoming a hostage or a slave Strong's. גָּאַל (gâʼal, H1350) is a specific kind of redemption: the "kinsman-redeemer" — the next of kin who has the right and duty to buy back a relative's land, or rescue them from debt-slavery, because they're family Strong's. Put together, God isn't just saying "I'll get them out." He's saying "I have both the means and the family obligation to do this" — like a brother who shows up at the auction block because it's his relative on the block.

שְׁאוֹל (shᵉʼôwl, H7585) is Sheol, the underground realm of the dead — not hell-as-torment, just the shadowy holding place everyone descended to Strong's. מָוֶת (mâveth, H4194) is death itself, sometimes even standing in for plague or ruin — death as an active, devouring force, not just an absence of life Strong's.

Then the taunt words: דֶּבֶר (deber, H1698), "pestilence," and קֹטֶב (qôṭeb, H6987), "destruction" or "sting" — these are death's weapons, and God asks where they've gone, as if disarming a defeated enemy Strong's.

And the last word, נֹחַם (nôcham, H5164) — "compassion," but its root sense is closer to "changing one's mind" or "relenting." סָתַר (çâthar, H5641) means to hide or cover something from sight Strong's. So the line is literally "relenting is hidden from my eyes" — which is exactly why translators split: is God hiding his mind from pity toward judgment, or hiding it from changing his rescue plan? The Hebrew genuinely carries both.

Paul takes this verse and throws it, like a shout of victory, into the middle of his resurrection chapter: "Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" ( 1 Corinthians 15:54-55). He's quoting Hosea's taunt directly, but he's not quoting it as a threat against Israel — he's quoting it as an accomplished fact because of the empty tomb Adam Clarke.

Here's the honest way to say it: Hosea didn't know he was writing about a resurrected Messiah eight centuries out. He was writing about God's power to rescue a dying, exiled nation — and possibly, in that dark second half of the verse, about God's refusal to rescue them yet, letting judgment fall first. But the Spirit who inspired Hosea's words about a God who can march into Sheol's territory and empty it out was setting up a pattern that only makes final sense when Jesus actually walks out of a grave. Adam Clarke saw this centuries ago: this verse pictures "the Prince of life" lying for a time under death's power precisely in order to break it from the inside Adam Clarke. That's a bigger claim than Hosea's own moment could bear, but it's not a bigger claim than the whole Bible's story can bear.

Isaiah picked up the same thread — "he will swallow up death forever" ( Isaiah 25:8) — and Revelation closes the loop: "there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain" ( Revelation 21:4). Hosea 13:14 is a flare shot up early in the story, not yet knowing exactly how the rescue would happen, but trusting that the God who has the right (as kinsman) and the power (as ransomer) to walk into death's territory would eventually do it — completely, publicly, once for all — in his Son.

Sit with the discomfort of this verse before you rush to the comfort. Whichever way you read that last line — "compassion is hidden from my eyes" — it should unsettle you a little. This is not a God who is embarrassed to talk about judgment, about a people so hardened in their idols that he lets the consequences land. If you only ever read the Bible for warm feelings, Hosea 13 will feel like cold water. Good. It should. Sin has weight. It costs something — and Israel found that out the hard way, in 722 BC, when the nation they'd built their whole identity around simply stopped existing.

But don't stop there, because the verse doesn't stop there either. The same God who can withhold compassion is the God who claims, with total confidence, the power to walk into the grave and empty it out. That's not a small claim. He's not saying "I hope things work out." He's saying "I own Death's mailing address." And what costs you something here is this: are you willing to let God be both things at once — the one who lets you feel the weight of what you've chased instead of him, and the one who has already paid to bring you back? You can't have the rescue without admitting you needed ransoming in the first place. That's the part pride resists.

If you're in a Hosea 13:13 kind of season — stuck, no strength left, feeling like something in you has already died — don't skip past that to the resurrection shout. Let the ransom word land on you specifically: he paid to get you back, because you're family to him. Not because you cleaned up first.

• Lord, I confess the places where I've chased other things — success, comfort, control — the way Israel chased Baal, and I ask you to name that honestly to me instead of letting me hide it.
• Thank you that you claim the right, as my kinsman-redeemer, to buy me back from death itself — I don't fully understand what that cost you, but I'm grateful.
• Where I feel like something in me is already dead — a relationship, a dream, my own hope — I ask you to speak your resurrection power over it.
• Give me the courage to sit with the hard parts of your character, not just the comforting ones, and to trust you even when I don't understand your timing.
• I ask for the same confidence Paul had at the empty tomb — let me really believe death's sting is gone, not just recite it.

• Where in your life right now would you honestly say "compassion feels hidden" — and can you bring that feeling to God directly instead of around him?
• What is the "Baal" in your life — the thing you quietly trust to keep you fed and secure instead of God?
• Does the idea of a kinsman-redeemer — someone with both the right and the will to buy you back — land as good news, or does it make you uncomfortable to be that dependent on someone else?
• When you read Paul's resurrection shout borrowed from this verse, do you actually feel death's sting is gone, or is that still mostly a doctrine you agree with rather than a hope you live inside of?
• What would it cost you to actually believe God can walk into the deadest part of your life and empty it out?
