Daniel 8:13

Daniel is watching a vision he doesn't understand, and then he overhears two angels talking to each other — not to him. That detail matters: he's eavesdropping on heaven's own conversation about earth's pain. One angel, called simply "a holy one," asks the other a question every suffering person has asked in some form: how long? Specifically — how long until this horror is over? The horror in question is described in three pieces: the daily sacrifice (the twice-a-day offering that kept Israel's worship running) being stopped, a "rebellion" or "revolt" — the Hebrew pesha (H6588) — that leaves devastation in its wake, and the sanctuary itself along with God's people ("the host") being trampled underfoot Strong's.

This comes right after Daniel has just watched, in vision, a small horn grow arrogant enough to attack the "Prince of the host" and throw down the place of God's sanctuary (8:10-12). Antiochus is the villain the "little horn" of chapter 8 is pointing to. He didn't just tax and govern the Jews — he outlawed circumcision, burned copies of the Torah, and in 167 BC set up an altar to Zeus in the Jerusalem temple and sacrificed a pig on it, the ultimate act of contempt against everything the temple stood for. He also stopped the twice-daily sacrifice that had run, uninterrupted, in some form since the temple's dedication. The word for "holy one" is קָדוֹשׁ (qadowsh, H6918) — it can mean something set apart, or, as a noun, an angel or a saint Strong's. Daniel doesn't name these beings; he just identifies them by what they are — sacred, set apart, belonging to God's own inner council. That itself is striking: this conversation isn't between Daniel and God, it's a conversation within heaven itself that Daniel is privileged to overhear.

The word behind "rebellion" is פֶּשַׁע (pesha, H6588) — not just a mistake or a slip, but a revolt, a willful, national or religious act of defiance Strong's. This is the same word used for humanity's rebellion against God more broadly (it's the word behind "transgression" throughout the Prophets). Antiochus's desecration of the temple is being named as an act of cosmic treason, not mere political overreach.

"Trampled" comes from מִרְמָס (mirmac, H4823), meaning literally to be trodden down, stomped on, abased Strong's — the same picture Jesus and John pick up centuries later when they describe Jerusalem being "trampled" by Gentile armies ( Luke 21:24, Revelation 11:2). It's a picture of total humiliation — something sacred treated like dirt underfoot.

And תָּמִיד (tamiyd, H8548), the "daily" sacrifice, literally means something stretched out continually, unbroken Strong's — the whole horror of the vision is that this constant, faithful rhythm of worship gets interrupted. The question "how long" (from דָבַר, dabar, H1696, "to speak," combined with the unnamed "certain one," palmowniy, H6422) is a question about when God will restart what evil has stopped.

This verse is a question hanging in the air, and the whole rest of the Bible is, in one sense, God's answer to it. "How long" is the oldest prayer of the suffering church — you hear it from Isaiah ( Isaiah 6:11), from the martyrs under the altar in Revelation 6:10, and from Daniel's angels here. It's the cry of people watching something holy get desecrated and wondering if God has looked away.

Jesus takes this exact vision and puts it in his own mouth. In Matthew 24:15, warning his disciples about coming disaster in Jerusalem, he says, "when you see the abomination of desolation... spoken of through the prophet Daniel" — he treats Daniel 8's language as still live, still unfolding, pointing not just backward to Antiochus but forward to another desecration his generation would see. Luke's version ( Luke 21:20-24) makes it explicit: Jerusalem trampled by Gentiles "until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled" — the same trampling language as our verse.

But here's where it lands closest to home: the daily sacrifice that gets interrupted in Daniel 8 was always a stand-in, a shadow, for something it couldn't fully deliver — real, lasting access to God. When Jesus died, the temple veil tore, and the entire sacrificial system that Antiochus once managed to interrupt for a few years was fulfilled and closed out forever, not by a pagan king stopping it, but by God himself completing it ( Hebrews 10:11-14, though not in your reference list, is the fullest picture of this). The trampling of the sanctuary in Daniel 8 is temporary and reversible — the temple gets rededicated. The access Jesus opens is not temporary. Not humans complaining in unbelief, but holy beings, standing in God's own presence, wanting to know when the trampling stops.

That should loosen something in your chest. You are not being unfaithful when you ask how long. You're in good company — angelic company. The mistake isn't in asking; it's in assuming that because the answer hasn't come, no one is listening. Daniel doesn't get an easy answer — he gets a number of days he probably had to sit with for years, maybe never seeing it fulfilled in his own lifetime. That's the cost this verse asks of you: to keep asking honestly, and to keep trusting even when the timeline isn't yours to know.

Here's the harder edge, though. The rebellion that caused the desolation wasn't just "out there" in Antiochus — Scripture consistently treats pesha, willful rebellion against God, as something that lives in every human heart, including yours. Before you get too comfortable identifying with the persecuted saints asking "how long," ask yourself honestly where you've been the one trampling something holy underfoot — a relationship, a conscience, a Sabbath rest, a word from God you decided didn't apply to you. The good news is that the sacrifice that answers both problems — your suffering and your rebellion — has already been made, once, completely, in Christ. You're not waiting on a number of days anymore. You're waiting on him to come finish what he started.
