Ezekiel 45:17

Look at what's happening here: God is handing someone a job description. In this vision of a restored Israel, Ezekiel sees a figure called "the prince" (not a king in the old, corrupt sense — Ezekiel deliberately avoids that word after watching Israel's kings run the nation into the ground) and gives him one specific responsibility: pay for the sacrifices. Burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings, sin offerings, peace offerings — for every feast day, every new moon, every Sabbath, every appointed gathering on the calendar. The prince doesn't do the sacrificing himself; that's the priests' job. He funds it. He makes sure the worship of Israel never runs dry for lack of provision.

What's easy to miss is why this matters so much: the last time you saw "the prince" language attached to Israel's throne, it was tangled up with kings who taxed the poor to build palaces and let the temple crumble (see 2 Kings 16, 2 Kings 21). Here the leader's whole purpose is inverted — his wealth exists to keep the nation "at atonement" with God, not to keep himself comfortable. That's a stunning reversal, and it echoes what good kings like Hezekiah actually did ( 2 Chronicles 31:3, 2 Chronicles 30:24) — using royal resources to keep the sacrificial system running for the people.

This sits near the end of Ezekiel, in the long, strange final vision (chapters 40–48) of a rebuilt temple and reordered land — a vision meant to comfort exiles in Babylon that God's presence and worship would return to them, restored and pure Matthew Henry. Christians disagree sharply on how literally to take this: some (especially certain premillennial dispensationalist readers) expect an actual future temple with literal animal sacrifices rebuilt in Jerusalem; others (most of the historic church, Catholic, Orthodox, and Reformed alike) read this whole section as symbolic — a picture of the coming perfection of worship under Christ, not a blueprint to rebuild.

Ezekiel was a priest-turned-prophet, deported to Babylon in 597 BC along with King Jehoiachin and thousands of Judah's leading citizens — a full decade before Jerusalem itself was finally destroyed in 586 BC. He wrote from exile, sitting by the Kebar River in Babylon, ministering to a broken, humiliated community that had lost their land, their king, their temple, and — they feared — their God. This vision comes near the end of the book, dated to around 573 BC, about fourteen years after Jerusalem fell ( Ezekiel 40:1).

Picture the audience: people who grew up watching corrupt kings squeeze the nation for luxury while temple worship decayed and idols multiplied in the very courts where God was supposed to be worshiped (you can read Ezekiel's own furious description of this in chapters 8–11). Their whole world had collapsed, and now this priest-prophet, in exile, starts describing — in exhaustive architectural and administrative detail — a temple that doesn't exist yet, a land divided with surveyor's precision, and a leader who, unlike every king they remembered, exists to serve the worship of God rather than exploit it.

This wasn't abstract theology to them. It was medicine for despair. Exiles who'd lost everything needed to hear that God wasn't done — that he still intended a place, a people, and a leader devoted to keeping his people in right relationship with him. The specific mention of new moons and Sabbaths and appointed feasts (Ezekiel is using the same calendar language found throughout the Law — see Numbers 28–29) told them: the rhythms of worship you remember from home, God intends to give them back to you, richer and more secure than before.

The key word carrying the whole verse is נָשִׂיא (nâsîʼ), H5387 — "prince." Its root meaning is "an exalted one," someone lifted up Strong's. Ezekiel almost never uses the normal Hebrew word for "king" (melek) in this vision — he reaches for this humbler, older title instead. That's a deliberate downgrade in language, a signal that this leader isn't going to rule like the kings who ruined the nation.

Then look at the sacrifices themselves. עֹלָה (ʻôlâh), H5930, the "burnt offering," literally means something "going up" — it comes from a root meaning "to ascend," picturing smoke rising to God as the whole animal is consumed Strong's. מִנְחָה (minchâh), H4503, the "grain offering," carries the sense of a gift or tribute — bloodless, often just flour and oil Strong's. חַטָּאָה (chaṭṭâʼâh), H2403, the "sin offering," shares its root with the ordinary word for sin itself — the sacrifice and the offense are named with the same word family, tying the two together inseparably Strong's.

The verse ends with the verb כָּפַר (kâphar), H3722 — "to make atonement." Its most basic, almost physical sense is "to cover" or "to smear over," like sealing something with pitch so water can't get through Strong's. That's the picture underneath the theological word: sin is a breach, a leak, a gap between people and God, and atonement is what seals it shut. The prince's whole job, according to this verse, is making sure that seal never fails for lack of supply.

Here's where you have to be honest about two different, legitimate ways to read this. Some readers see this "prince" as simply a future human governor, distinct from Christ, ruling in a restored earthly order. But there's an old and rich stream of Christian reading — going back through commentators like John Gill — that sees this prince as a picture pointing toward Christ himself, who is both prince and priest in one person John Gill. That's worth sitting with even if you hold it loosely.

Think about what this prince does: he doesn't perform the sacrifice with his own hands, but he provides it — he supplies, out of his own resources, everything needed so that the people can be brought back into right standing with God, again and again, on every feast, every Sabbath, every appointed day. Now put that next to Jesus. He is both the one who provides the offering and the offering itself — "Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant sacrificial offering to God" ( Ephesians 5:2). Every sacrifice this prince pays for — burnt, grain, drink, sin, peace — pictures some facet of what the cross does in one act: total devotion (burnt), grateful worship (grain and drink), covering guilt (sin), and restored friendship with God (peace).

And notice: in this vision, atonement never runs out because the prince never stops providing it. That's a shadow of a bigger truth. The old system needed constant, repeated sacrifice because none of it actually removed sin — it only covered it, again and again ( Hebrews 10:1-4). Jesus offered one sacrifice that actually finishes the job ( Hebrews 10:12), which is why Hebrews can say plainly that those who serve the old system "have no right" to the altar Christians now eat from ( Hebrews 13:10). This verse isn't a straight-line prophecy of Jesus — it's a picture, drawn in the language of temple economics, of a Provider whose generosity never lets his people go hungry for peace with God.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: who's paying for your worship? Not literally — you're not slaughtering bulls on Saturday morning. But worship has always cost something — time, attention, money, sacrifice of some kind — and somebody has to supply it or it dries up.

The prince in this vision doesn't wait to be asked. He builds the cost of atonement into the calendar itself — every feast, every Sabbath, every appointed day, already funded, already provided for, before anyone shows up needing it. That's a picture of a God who doesn't make you scrape together enough devotion to earn his favor. He supplies it. Jesus already paid the whole bill.

But don't let that turn into passivity. The flip side of this verse is that leadership — in a home, a church, wherever you have influence — is measured by what you provide for others' access to God, not by what you extract from them. If you're a parent, a pastor, an employer, a friend with any kind of pull: are you using your position to make it easier for people near you to worship, or harder? Are you spending yourself so someone else's faith can breathe, the way this prince spends his wealth so Israel's worship never stalls?

And for you personally — Colossians 3:17 says whatever you do, do it in Jesus' name, giving thanks through him. That's the New Testament version of this prince's job: your ordinary Tuesday, your work, your conversations, offered up as a kind of grain offering, a kind of peace offering, paid for already by the one who never stops providing. The cost this verse asks of you is simple and hard: stop treating your access to God as something you have to fund yourself, and start living like someone who's already been provided for.

• Show me where I'm treating worship like a burden I have to fund myself instead of a gift already provided for.
• Wherever I lead — as a parent, a friend, at work — make me someone who spends myself so others find it easier to reach You, not harder.
• Forgive me for the times I've hoarded what You gave me instead of using it to provide for others' good.
• Deepen my gratitude for the atonement Christ made once for all, so I stop living like the debt is still open.

• Where in your life do you quietly believe you have to "fund" your own standing with God through effort, guilt, or performance?
• Think of someone under your influence — a child, a coworker, a friend. Are you making it easier or harder for them to draw near to God?
• What would change in your week if you actually believed the debt for your sin was already, fully paid?
• Is there an area of generosity — money, time, attention — you're withholding that could be "provision" for someone else's worship?
• When was the last time you felt the weight of what it cost to make you right with God, rather than just accepting it as old news?
