Ezekiel 30:3

Look at how this verse hammers the same word three times: near, near, day, day. "For the day is near, the Day of the LORD is near." That's not sloppy repetition — that's a prophet pounding a drum to make sure nobody in the room can pretend they didn't hear it. Ezekiel is speaking to Egypt (this whole chapter is a funeral dirge aimed at Pharaoh and his kingdom), telling them their clock has run out.

What's plainly there: a specific historical judgment is coming — Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar is about to crush Egypt. What's easy to miss is the phrase "the Day of the LORD." This isn't just "a bad day for Egypt." It's a name, almost a title, that Israel's prophets used for something bigger than any single battle — the moment when God steps out from behind the curtain of ordinary history and settles accounts. Egypt's fall becomes a preview, a down payment, on that larger reckoning Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. That's why the same phrase gets used by Joel for locusts devouring Judah, by Obadiah for Edom's cruelty, by Zephaniah for Jerusalem's own corruption — it's a pattern that keeps recurring wherever a proud nation thinks it's untouchable.

"A day of clouds" is a striking image because, as one older commentator points out, Egypt almost never saw storm clouds — their whole economy ran on the predictable flooding of the Nile, not rain John Gill. So God is saying: the very thing you never worry about is exactly what's coming for you. Where this sits in Ezekiel's larger story: chapters 25–32 are a tour of judgment speeches against Israel's neighboring nations, and Egypt gets the longest treatment because Judah kept running to Egypt for military help instead of trusting God — this verse is God pulling that last crutch away. Christian readers don't disagree much on the historical referent here, but they do disagree on how far to push "Day of the LORD" language toward the end of all history versus reading it as poetic intensity about a specific event — both readings have old, respected roots.

Ezekiel was a priest turned prophet, deported from Jerusalem to Babylon in 597 BC along with King Jehoiachin and thousands of Judah's leading citizens — this was years before Jerusalem itself was finally destroyed in 586 BC. He wrote and preached from exile, sitting by the Kebar River in Babylonian territory, to a community of fellow captives who were homesick, humiliated, and desperate for any word from God.

Chapter 30 is part of a stretch of oracles Ezekiel delivered against foreign nations, and Egypt gets special attention because of history: for over a century, whenever Assyria or then Babylon threatened Judah, Judah's kings kept looking south to Egypt for rescue — sending envoys, cutting deals, trusting Pharaoh's chariots more than God's promises. Egypt looked like the safe bet: an ancient, wealthy, seemingly unshakeable civilization with the Nile River guaranteeing its harvests no matter what happened elsewhere.

This particular prophecy was likely delivered right around the time Nebuchadnezzar's armies were actually turning toward Egypt — Ezekiel 29:17-19 dates a related oracle to around 571 BC, and the ancient Jewish commentator Kimchi noted that Egypt fell into Babylonian hands within the very year this word was spoken John Gill. So this wasn't distant speculation. Nebuchadnezzar had already flattened Jerusalem, and now his armies were marching on the last great power standing between Babylon and total regional dominance. For Ezekiel's original audience — Jewish exiles grieving their own ruined homeland — watching Egypt's turn come next would have been both vindication (God keeps his word, even about judgment) and a sober warning: no empire, however old or self-sufficient, is safe from the day when God calls in the debt.

The Hebrew here is built for repetition and rhythm, which is why it lands so hard read aloud. יוֹם (yôwm, H3117) simply means "day" — but it does double duty, meaning both a literal 24-hour stretch and, when paired with a name, a defined "moment" in God's timeline Strong's. That's what happens with יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) — God's personal covenant name, the "I AM," the self-existent one — attached to "day" to form the fixed phrase "Day of the LORD." It's not vague dread; it's God's own name stamped on the calendar.

קָרוֹב (qârôwb, H7138) means "near" — near in place or near in time — and its root idea is "to draw close, to approach" Strong's. Saying it twice in one breath ("the day is near, the Day of the LORD is near") isn't Hebrew stutter; it's emphasis, the way you'd say "he's coming, he's really coming" to someone who still doesn't believe you.

עָנָן (ʻânân, H6051) is "cloud" — specifically the thick, dark, storm-bearing kind, not a wispy cirrus Strong's. For a nation like Egypt that almost never saw rain clouds because the Nile did all the watering for them, this image would have felt genuinely alien and ominous.

Finally, גּוֹי (gôwy, H1471), translated "nations" here, is the word for foreign, non-Israelite peoples — "the heathen" in older translations Strong's. It signals this judgment isn't a private family matter between God and Israel; it's God settling accounts with the wider world, Egypt included.

This is a quiet echo more than a straight line, and it's worth being honest about that. Ezekiel isn't predicting Jesus directly here — he's predicting Nebuchadnezzar's armies marching on the Nile. But the phrase "the Day of the LORD" is one of those threads that runs all through the Old Testament and gets picked up and reframed in the New.

Here's the shape of it: every time a prophet announces a "Day of the LORD" against a nation — Egypt here, Edom in Obadiah 1:15, Judah itself in Zephaniah 1:14 — it's a small, real, historical judgment that also points forward, like a smaller wave signaling a bigger one still coming. The New Testament writers pick up this exact phrase and language and apply it to the return of Christ — 2 Peter 3:10 says "the Day of the Lord will come like a thief," and Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:2 uses almost identical wording. Jesus himself, in Matthew 24:29-30, uses this very imagery of darkened skies and cosmic upheaval — echoing Ezekiel 32:7's language of covered sun and stars — to describe his own coming to judge and to rescue.

So the pattern Ezekiel names against Egypt — pride that thinks itself untouchable, finally meeting the God who says "your time has come" — finds its full and final form at the return of Christ, when every empire, ancient or modern, meets the same reckoning. But there's a flip side that Ezekiel himself points to just a few chapters later: the same God who brings a "day of clouds and darkness" in judgment ( Ezekiel 34:12) also promises to come as a shepherd searching for his scattered sheep on that very day. Jesus is that shepherd ( John 10:11). The Day of the Lord is genuinely terrifying for the proud and genuinely a rescue for those who belong to him — and you can't get the second without facing the first honestly.

Here's what makes this verse uncomfortable if you actually sit with it: Egypt didn't think this day was coming. They had the Nile. They had history. They had centuries of being the biggest, oldest, most secure power in their world. And God says: your day is near.

What's your Nile? What's the thing you've built your sense of safety on that has nothing to do with God — your career, your health, your bank account, your reputation, the sheer predictability of your comfortable life? This verse doesn't ask you to feel vaguely spiritual about judgment happening to "the nations" out there somewhere. It asks you to notice that pride and self-sufficiency always feel safe right up until the clouds show up.

The cost this verse asks of you isn't dramatic — it's daily. It's the discipline of not building your identity, your peace, your sense of "I'm fine" on anything that can be conquered, drained, or taken from you. It's letting God's ownership of time — his name stamped on "the day" — actually mean something for how you spend today. If the Day of the Lord really is near, in whatever sense you hold that (soon in calendar time, or simply certain and unstoppable), then today is not neutral. It's not just Tuesday. It's a day you're either living toward that reckoning honestly or numbing yourself against thinking about it at all.

Don't rush past the discomfort here to a tidy conclusion. Sit in it for a minute. Let the repetition — near, near — do its work on you the way it was meant to do on Pharaoh's court.
