Ezekiel 26:7

Look at what's happening here: God has already said, back in verse 3, that he's bringing "many nations" against Tyre like waves of the sea. Now he names names. No more vague threat — it's Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, coming from the north with horses, chariots, cavalry, and a massive army. This is God pointing his finger at a specific, dateable, real-world king and saying: that's my instrument.

Notice the title: "king of kings." That's not flattery — it's a technical term for an emperor who has other kings as his vassals, subordinate rulers who answer to him Adam Clarke. Nebuchadnezzar didn't just rule Babylon; he ruled kings. And here's what should stop you cold: God calmly claims the right to hand this "king of kings" his marching orders. The most powerful man on earth, at that moment, is nothing more than a tool in God's hand against a proud coastal city.

The easy-to-miss part is the direction: "from the north." Tyre sat right on the Mediterranean coast — you'd expect an army from the north to be strange geography for reaching it, but this was actually the standard invasion route through Syria and down along the Orontes River valley, since a direct desert crossing from Babylon was brutal Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. God isn't speaking in poetic generalities; he's describing an actual military campaign, one that history confirms took thirteen long years John Gill.

This verse sits in the middle of a three-chapter oracle against Tyre ( Ezekiel 26–28), the longest single judgment speech in the book, because Tyre was the New York of the ancient Mediterranean — its fall would shock the whole trading world Matthew Henry. Christians don't disagree much on the historical referent here (it's clearly Nebuchadnezzar's siege), but they do wrestle with how literally chapter 26's later details of total, permanent ruin were fulfilled by Babylon alone versus completed later by Alexander the Great — a question for later verses, but it starts here.

Ezekiel was a priest turned prophet, deported to Babylon in 597 BC along with King Jehoiachin and thousands of Jerusalem's elite — a full decade before Jerusalem itself finally fell in 586 BC. He prophesied from exile, sitting among fellow captives by the Kebar River, watching his homeland collapse from a distance. This oracle against Tyre comes right after news reaches him that Jerusalem has fallen ( Ezekiel 26:1-2), and Tyre — a wealthy island-city just up the coast from Israel — had celebrated. "Aha, the gate of the peoples is broken," Tyre gloats in verse 2, rubbing its hands together at the thought of scooping up Jerusalem's trade routes now that its rival is gone.

Tyre wasn't some minor outpost. It was one of the ancient world's great trading powers, built partly on a rocky island just off the coast, protected by walls and the sea itself, growing rich on shipping lanes that stretched from Spain to Africa to the edges of the known world. Kings envied it; Isaiah had already prophesied against it over a century earlier ( Isaiah 23).

Now Ezekiel names the coming judge: Nebuchadnezzar II, the Babylonian emperor who had already crushed Jerusalem and was, at the time this was likely spoken (around 587-586 BC), turning his attention toward the coast. Historical record — both from the Jewish historian Josephus and Babylonian sources — confirms Nebuchadnezzar besieged Tyre for roughly thirteen years, beginning shortly after Jerusalem's destruction John Gill. Interestingly, the siege didn't produce total conquest of the island fortress the way Ezekiel later describes — a detail that matters for how you read the rest of the oracle. But at this exact moment, Ezekiel's exiled community is hearing a stunning claim: the same king who just destroyed their home is now, at God's command, marching against the city that mocked their downfall.

The verse opens with the formula כֹּה־אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה — "thus says the Lord GOD." That second name, אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה (ʼĂdônây Yᵉhôvih, H136 + H3069), is a double-stack of divine titles the Jewish scribes handled carefully — pronouncing the unspeakable covenant name YHWH here as if it were "Elohim" so as not to say "Lord" twice in a row Strong's. It's God's way of signing the message with full weight of authority before a word of judgment is even spoken.

Then comes the direction: מִצָּפ֔וֹן (tsâphôwn, H6828) — "from the north." The word's root sense is "hidden" or "dark, unknown" Strong's — the north was, to the ancient Israelite imagination, the direction of gloom and threat, the quarter you couldn't quite see into. It's not just geography; it's mood.

The military list — סוּס (çûwç, H5483, "horse"), רֶכֶב (rekeb, H7393, "chariot/cavalry"), פָּרָשׁ (pârâsh, H6571, "horseman/cavalry driver"), and קָהָל רַב (qâhâl rab, H6951 + H7227, "a great, abundant assembly/company") — piles up terms almost redundantly, horses and chariots and horsemen and a vast crowd, the way you'd stack adjectives to make someone feel the size of an approaching army Strong's. And melek H4428, "king," gets used twice in one phrase — "king of kings" — which in the ancient world wasn't poetic exaggeration but the literal technical title for an emperor who held other kings as his subjects Adam Clarke.

Here's the phrase that should catch in your throat: "king of kings." Scripture will use that exact title again — for Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2:37, and later, gloriously, for Jesus in Revelation 19:16, where the rider on the white horse has "KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS" written on his robe and thigh.

That's not a coincidence the Spirit wants you to miss. Nebuchadnezzar wore that title by conquest and terror — he earned it by grinding other kings under his boot. But he wore it only on loan. God says plainly here, "I will bring" him — the emperor of the world is a tool in a greater King's hand, summoned and dismissed like a hired sword Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Every earthly "king of kings" in the Bible — Nebuchadnezzar, later the Persian Artaxerxes in Ezra 7:12 — turns out to be borrowing a title that belongs, in full and forever, to only one Person.

Jesus is the King of kings not because he conquered nations with horses and chariots, but because he's the one all thrones — Babylon's included — were made through and for ( Colossians 1:16). Paul says it outright in 1 Timothy 6:15: Christ alone is "the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords." Every proud empire this side of Eden, no matter how it terrifies the nations, is temporary. Nebuchadnezzar's armies are dust. Christ's kingdom has no end ( Luke 1:33).

So when you read Ezekiel 26:7 and feel the weight of "king of kings," let it do this for you: it should make you long for the true one. Every human power that ever called itself ultimate — every Caesar, every empire, every stock market or army or government that seems unstoppable right now — is Nebuchadnezzar. Borrowed, summoned, and someday sent home.

Here's what unsettles me about this verse: God doesn't just predict Tyre's fall — he claims Nebuchadnezzar. "I will bring." Not "Nebuchadnezzar decided to invade." God takes personal, first-person credit for aiming the most brutal war machine of the age at a specific target.

Sit with that. It means the news you're scared of right now — the powerful people, the systems, the things that feel unstoppable and terrifying in your own life — are not outside God's hand, even when they look like pure chaos or pure evil. That's uncomfortable if you want a God who only does nice things through nice people. This verse says otherwise. God can use a pagan emperor's ambition, greed, and cruelty as an instrument, without excusing the emperor's ambition, greed, or cruelty one bit.

Here's the cost this verse asks of you: it asks you to trust God's sovereignty over the things that terrify you before you can see how it resolves. Tyre didn't know, in the moment the army appeared on the horizon, that this was God settling accounts for its pride and its gloating over Jerusalem's ruin ( Ezekiel 26:2). All Tyre saw was horses and dust and fear. You are sometimes going to be in that position — watching something enormous and frightening bear down on you or people you love, with no visible sign that God is in it at all.

The invitation here isn't passive resignation. It's this: stop assuming that whatever looks biggest and loudest in your life is actually in charge. Nebuchadnezzar looked unstoppable. He was a leash-dog. Ask yourself honestly: what "king of kings" are you currently more afraid of, or more impressed by, than the actual King of kings?

• Lord, when I see powerful people or systems that seem unstoppable, remind me that you are the one who summons and dismisses them, not the other way around.
• Forgive me for the times I've feared "Nebuchadnezzar" more than I've trusted you.
• Teach me to hold my own security loosely, the way you held Tyre's pride loosely — because nothing built on pride outlasts you.
• Draw my eyes to Jesus, the true King of kings, whenever I'm tempted to be impressed by borrowed power.
• Give me patience to wait for your justice, even when it takes years, like the siege of Tyre, to unfold.

• What "king of kings" in your own life — a person, an institution, a fear — do you secretly believe is bigger than God right now?
• When something terrifying is bearing down on you, do you actually believe God could be at work in it, or does that feel like a cop-out answer?
• Tyre mocked Jerusalem's downfall before facing its own. Where have you quietly celebrated someone else's collapse?
• If God can use a pagan emperor's cruelty for his purposes without excusing the cruelty, how does that change the way you think about the injustice you see in the news?
• Do you find comfort or discomfort in the idea that God claims personal responsibility ("I will bring") for hard, violent chapters of history? Why?
