Ezekiel 25:6

Look at the picture God paints here: hands clapping, feet stomping, a heart doing a little victory dance. This is the Ammonites — a nation living just east of Israel, across the Jordan — celebrating when Jerusalem fell to Babylon in 586 BC. God doesn't just say "you were glad." He describes the whole body getting in on it: hands (H3027 yad), feet (H7272 regel), and the innermost self (H5315 nephesh — literally your "breathing creature," your whole living being) Strong's. This wasn't a private smirk. It was full-body glee at someone else's ruin.

The word translated "contempt" (H7589 sheʼat) comes from a root meaning "to push aside" — like shoving something out of your way because it's beneath your notice Strong's. That's the real crime God is naming: not just joy, but a joy built on despising people made in his image, people he calls his own.

What's easy to miss is why this matters so much to God. The Ammonites didn't lift a hand against Israel here — they just applauded from the sidelines while Babylon did the damage. God is telling us that gloating over someone's disaster is its own sin, even if you never threw a punch. As Matthew Henry points out, God had just finished judging his own people through Ezekiel's earlier chapters — but that judgment doesn't give outsiders license to cheer Matthew Henry. This verse opens a whole section ( Ezekiel 25) where God turns from Israel to Israel's neighbors — Ammon, Moab, Edom, Philistia — and holds each one accountable for how they treated his people in their worst hour. Christians largely agree on the plain sense here; where they differ is more about how literally to read "clapping hands" as prophetic imagery versus eyewitness reporting of actual celebration — a minor point, since either way the moral weight lands the same.

Ezekiel was a priest taken captive to Babylon in 597 BC, about a decade before Jerusalem finally fell. He prophesied to fellow exiles living by the Kebar River in Babylon, roughly between 593 and 571 BC. This verse comes right after the worst news imaginable has landed: Jerusalem has been destroyed, the Temple burned, the survivors dragged into exile. You'd expect Ezekiel's next words to be comfort. Instead, God turns his attention outward — to the nations who lived around Israel and watched it burn.

The Ammonites lived just east of the Jordan River, in what's now Jordan, and had a long, sour history with Israel going back centuries — border disputes, old grudges, occasional wars. When Babylon's armies crushed Judah, Ammon didn't mourn a neighbor's tragedy. According to John Gill, Nebuchadnezzar had actually been weighing whether to strike Jerusalem or Ammon first — the Ammonites had reason to fear they were next on the list John Gill. Instead of trembling in solidarity, they threw a party. Adam Clarke notes these judgments against Ammon, along with Moab, Edom, and Philistia, were carried out by Nebuchadnezzar's own hand about five years after Jerusalem fell — so the very empire Ammon cheered on eventually turned and crushed them too Adam Clarke. This is a common pattern in the ancient world: smaller nations positioning themselves as glad allies of whichever empire seemed to be winning, kicking a fallen rival while they're down, hoping to profit from the wreckage or just savor an old rivalry's end.

The verse opens with the formula אֲדֹנָי יְהֹוִה (ʼĂdônây Yᵉhôvih, H136 + H3069) — "the Lord GOD." The written text uses God's covenant name, but Jewish tradition pronounced it as "Elohim" to avoid saying the sacred name twice in a row Strong's. It's a small detail that shows you how seriously this culture took the weight of God's own name — even in a chapter of judgment, his covenant identity is front and center.

Then come the physical verbs: מָחָא (mâchâʼ, H4222) means to strike hands together in exultation — not a polite clap, but an exuberant one — paired with יָד (yâd, H3027), "hand." Right after it, רָקַע (râqaʻ, H7554) means to pound the earth as a sign of passion, describing the stomping feet (רֶגֶל, regel, H7272) Strong's. Put these together and you get something almost like a war-dance of joy — total-body celebration, not a subtle sneer.

The heart-word here is שָׂמַח (sâmach, H8055), "to brighten up, be gleeful" — describing genuine delight, not fake or forced Strong's. And it's directed with שְׁאָט (sheʼat, H7589), "contempt," a word rooted in the idea of shoving something aside as worthless Strong's. The last word, אֲדָמָה (ʼădâmâh, H127) — "soil, ground" — reminds you this joy was aimed at land, the very dirt God had promised to his people, tying their gloating to a rejection of God's own covenant promises attached to that ground.

This verse sits in a story about people gloating over the fall of God's people — and the whole Bible eventually shows you a moment when the crowd gloats over the fall of God's own Son. At the cross, people "clapped their hands" in effect — the religious leaders mocked him, passersby wagged their heads, soldiers jeered ( Matthew 27:39-44). It's the same posture Ezekiel condemns in Ammon: watching someone go down and feeling nothing but contempt.

But here's where the story turns somewhere Ammon's story never could. When Israel fell, God defended his people's honor by judging the nations who gloated (see also Ezekiel 36:5, where God says almost the identical thing about Edom taking Israel's land "with wholehearted joy and utter contempt"). When Jesus fell — when he was mocked, stripped, and killed — God didn't just avenge him afterward. He raised him. The apparent triumph of contempt over the Son of God became the very moment God defeated sin and death for good ( 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, where the cross that looked like foolishness and defeat becomes "the power of God").

There's also a quieter echo worth naming: this chapter shows God as the defender of the defeated, the guardian of people who have no army left to protect their own dignity. That's exactly who Jesus is for you — the one who stands up for the beaten-down, the mocked, the people the world has decided to write off ( Matthew 5:4, "Blessed are those who mourn"). If you've ever been kicked while you were down, this verse tells you God notices, and he doesn't forget. Jesus is where that noticing becomes flesh and blood.

Be honest with yourself for a second: when has someone's downfall made you glad? Not because justice was served, but because you just liked seeing them lose — a rival who got fired, an ex who got dumped, a public figure you already despised getting humiliated online. That little flush of pleasure at someone else's ruin — Ezekiel calls that contempt, and God calls it a sin worth judging.

What's uncomfortable here is that Ammon never lifted a finger against Jerusalem. They didn't storm the walls or burn the Temple. Their sin was entirely in their hands, feet, and heart — celebration, nothing more. That should unsettle you, because it means you don't have to actively harm someone to sin against them. You can sin against people just by how you feel when they suffer.

The cost this verse asks of you is real: it asks you to stop keeping score in your heart. To stop quietly rooting for the downfall of people you resent. To catch yourself the next time you feel that clap-your-hands satisfaction and ask, honestly, "Am I glad because justice happened, or because I just wanted them to hurt?" Those are very different things, and God can tell the difference even when you can't.

And if you're the one who's been mocked, humiliated, kicked while you were down — this verse is also for you. God saw what Ammon did to a broken Jerusalem, and he didn't let it slide. He sees what's been done to you too. You don't have to clap back. He's already watching.
