Ezekiel 25:17

Look at where your finger lands on the page: this is the last verse of a chapter where God turns, one by one, to the small nations crowding around Israel's borders — Ammon, Moab, Edom, and here at the end, the Philistines. What's plainly here: God says He will pay them back hard — "great vengeance" — and the result will be that "they will know that I am the LORD." The point of the blow is recognition. These nations have lived as if the God of Israel were nothing, a tribal deity who'd just been defeated when Babylon flattened Jerusalem. God says: you will learn otherwise.

What's easy to miss: the word translated "vengeance" isn't a tantrum. In the verse just before this section, God says He'll take vengeance on Edom "by the hand of My people" ( Ezekiel 25:14) — this is measured, judicial, the response of a King to crimes. And the crime here is specific: these neighbors gloated and took advantage when Jerusalem fell. They kicked God's people while they were down.

Where Christians wrestle: does a God of "furious reproof" square with the God who is love? The honest answer most teachers give is yes — because love that never gets angry at evil isn't love, it's indifference. His anger is the flip side of His commitment to what's right.

Ezekiel was a priest hauled off to Babylon in 597 BC, part of the first wave of captives Nebuchadnezzar carried away before he came back and destroyed Jerusalem completely in 586 BC. So picture Ezekiel writing this not from the homeland but from a refugee settlement by a canal in Babylon (modern Iraq), among people who'd lost everything.

When Jerusalem fell, the little nations ringing Israel didn't mourn — they celebrated. The Ammonites and Moabites (east, across the Jordan), the Edomites (southeast, descendants of Esau), and the Philistines (the coastal strip to the west, the old enemies from David and Goliath's day) all looked at the smoking ruins and either cheered, looted, or grabbed land. Imagine watching your neighbor's house burn down and using the chaos to steal his car and laugh at him in the street. That's the offense God is responding to here.

The whole chapter is God's answer to a question His broken people were silently asking: Has God abandoned us? Have our enemies won? This was a world where every nation assumed its gods fought its wars. When your city fell, it meant your god lost. The Philistines won't just hear about the LORD — they'll encounter Him undeniably.

And the name they'll come to know is יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068), the personal covenant name of God, built from the verb "to be" — the self-existent One, the only one who simply is Strong's. The whole sentence drives toward this: every other power is borrowed and temporary; only Yahweh is real, and one day everyone will know it firsthand.

This is a hard verse to walk from God's burning vengeance straight to Jesus — but the line is real, and it runs right through the cross.

Here's the thread: God promises to repay evil. He will not shrug at the gloating, the cruelty, the kicking of people when they're down. The universe is not morally indifferent — every wrong gets weighed. Now hold that next to what Paul writes: "Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God's wrath; for it is written: 'Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,' says the Lord" ( Romans 12:19). The same word, the same promise — and Paul says it sets you free from having to settle every score yourself, because God will.

But here's the staggering turn. The "furious reproof," the burning heat of God's anger against evil — at the cross, Jesus drank it down. Isaiah saw it: "the chastisement that brought us peace was upon Him" ( Isaiah 53:5) — that word "chastisement" is the very kind of corrective punishment Ezekiel names here. So the God who says "they will know that I am the LORD" through judgment now says it through mercy too. Philippians 2:10–11 promises that one day every knee — Philistine, Ammonite, you, me — will bow and confess Jesus is Lord. The recognition Ezekiel demands by force, grace offers freely first. You can come to know the LORD now, at the foot of the cross, before the day when everyone knows Him at the judgment.

You probably don't lose sleep over the Philistines. So let this verse do its real work on you.

First, it asks you to stop domesticating God. We've quietly trimmed Him down into a kindly grandfather who would never be furious about anything — and a verse like this with its burning anger embarrasses us desiringgod.org. But a God who can't get angry at cruelty is not loving; He's just absent. The God who burns against those who kicked His people when they were down is the same God who burns on your behalf when you're the one being crushed. His anger is the proof He's paying attention.

Second — and this one costs you — God says vengeance is His. That means the score you've been keeping, the person you can't forgive, the wrong you're still privately plotting to repay: you have to put it down. Not because it didn't matter. Because it matters so much that God Himself has reserved the right to handle it. Leaving room for His justice is one of the most painful acts of trust there is. It feels like letting the guilty walk. It isn't. It's believing He sees what you saw.

Third, the whole verse drives toward knowing Him. The hard question is which way you'll come to know that He is the LORD — by gladly bowing now, or by being made to bow at the end. The Philistines learned the hard way. You've been handed the easy way: a cross where the furious reproof already fell, on Someone else, for you. The only fitting response to that is to stop running and let yourself be known by Him.

• Father, there's a score I've been keeping against ___. I lay it in Your hands today. You repay justly; I cannot. Take it from me.
• Thank You, Jesus, that the furious reproof I deserved fell on You at the cross. Let me never grow numb to that mercy.
• Lord, where I am the one being wronged and overlooked, remind me that You see, You care, and Your anger burns on behalf of the crushed.
• Make me one who knows You now, gladly, rather than one who has to be made to bow at the end.

• Whose downfall have I secretly enjoyed? Am I more like the rescued people of God here, or more like the gloating Philistines?
