Ezekiel 25:16

Point your finger at the page and read it slowly. God says, "I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines." That's a courtroom verdict, not a temper tantrum. This verse is the punchline of a short speech that runs from verse 15 to 17, and you can't understand verse 16 without verse 15: God is reacting to why the Philistines are being judged. They "acted in vengeance" with "malice of soul" and "everlasting enmity" against God's people. Verse 16 is the therefore — the sentence that follows the crime.

Notice the wordplay you'd miss in English. God says He will "cut off" (Hebrew karath) the "Cherethites" (Kerethi) — the words sound almost identical. It's a grim pun: He will cut off the cut-off people. The Cherethites were a Philistine clan living on the Mediterranean coast ( 1 Samuel 30:14), so this isn't a separate group — it's the heart of Philistia named twice for effect.

"The remnant along the coast" means the leftovers — whatever survivors earlier invasions had spared, God will finish. There's a finality here that should sober you.

Where this sits in the bigger story: chapters 25–32 of Ezekiel are God's verdicts on the nations surrounding Judah. Ezekiel had just spent chapters 1–24 pronouncing doom on Jerusalem itself. Now God turns outward — judgment began with His own people, but it doesn't end there. Christians don't really disagree about the meaning here — it's plain judgment — but they do debate how it was fulfilled (Babylon's later campaigns down the coast, then the Greeks and Romans), and how a New Testament reader should feel about divine vengeance at all.

Ezekiel was a priest dragged off to Babylon — modern Iraq, roughly 700 miles from home — when Babylon's king Nebuchadnezzar deported Jerusalem's leading citizens. He began prophesying around 593 BC, about six years before Jerusalem was finally destroyed in 586 BC. So picture a refugee community camped by a canal in a foreign land, getting word that their homeland is being torn apart.

Here's the gut-punch that drives chapter 25. When the Babylonian army finally closed in on Jerusalem, the little neighbor-nations didn't stand with Judah — they piled on. These small states partly wanted to win Babylon's favor and partly just wanted to see Judah demolished. Imagine your house catches fire and the neighbors show up — not with buckets, but to loot the place and cheer.

The Philistines were the oldest of those neighbors. A seafaring people who'd settled the southern Mediterranean coast (cities like Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon), they'd been Israel's enemy since the days of the judges — Samson, Goliath, the stolen ark. Centuries of bad blood. By Ezekiel's day they were a faded power, but the hatred hadn't faded. God names their sin precisely: "everlasting enmity" — a grudge with no expiration date.

One detail worth holding onto: in this whole roll call of doomed nations — Ammon, Moab, Edom, Philistia — Babylon itself isn't on the list, probably because Babylon is the very tool God is using to crush them all. God can use an empire to judge His enemies and then judge that empire too. Nobody gets away.

Three words carry the weight.

נָטָה (nâṭâh, H5186) — "stretch out." It's the gesture-word used when God stretched out His hand over the Red Sea. When God extends His hand, history bends. Here that same hand turns against an enemy. The hand that rescues is the hand that judges.

יָד (yâd, H3027) — "hand," and the Strong's note flags it as the open hand: power, means, direction. This isn't a clenched fist of rage; it's the open hand of deliberate authority. God isn't lashing out. He's executing a sentence.

כָּרַת (kârath, H3772) / כְּרֵתִי (Kerêthî, H3774) — here's the pun. Kârath means "to cut off, cut down, destroy." The Kerethi (Cherethites) are a Philistine clan whose name sounds like that very verb. God will cut off the Cut-off-ites. And there's a haunting irony buried in kârath: it's the same root used for "cutting" a covenant — making a binding promise by cutting an animal in two and walking between the pieces. The word that builds covenants is now the word that ends a people. The God who cuts a covenant with His own can also cut off those who set themselves against Him forever.

At first glance a verse about cutting off the Philistines has nothing to do with Jesus. But sit with the theme underneath it: God will not let cruelty against His people go unanswered. That thread runs straight to the cross — and through it.

The driving charge back in verse 15 is "vengeance." God says I will repay this. The New Testament picks up exactly that claim: "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," and "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God" ( Hebrews 10:30–31). So the honest question every reader of Ezekiel 25 should ask — where does this vengeance finally land? — has a stunning answer. For everyone who belongs to Jesus, the hand stretched out in wrath fell on Him instead. At the cross, God's just anger against everything cruel and God-hating in you landed on His own Son. The "cutting off" you deserved, He absorbed ( Isaiah 53:8 — "He was cut off from the land of the living").

Don't soften this into mere sentiment. Ezekiel's pattern is judgment first, then restoration — and the gospel follows the same shape. The wrath is real; the Philistines really were destroyed. But the cross is where that same wrath is poured out and exhausted, so that mercy can flow out the other side.

And notice one more quiet echo: the Cherethites — the very people being "cut off" here — show up earlier as part of David's personal bodyguard ( 2 Samuel 15:18). Foreigners, once outsiders, brought near to serve the king. That's the door the cross opens to anyone, from any nation, who stops fighting God and bows.

You probably read a verse like this and feel relieved it's about them — those ancient bad guys, the gloating Philistines. Don't let yourself off so easily. The sin God names is "everlasting enmity" — a grudge that never expires, a wound you keep open on purpose, a hatred you've decided to keep. Look at that honestly. Is there a person whose downfall you'd quietly enjoy? A family member you've written off forever? An old injury you've turned into a permanent identity? That's the Philistine sin. God takes it seriously enough to "stretch out His hand."

Here's the bracing thing: God's verdict against vengeance is itself a comfort — but only for the people who stop taking vengeance. The whole reason Israel could trust that God hadn't abandoned them was that He was settling their accounts Himself. Which means you don't have to. You can drop the grudge precisely because God is a better avenger than you'll ever be. The hand that judged Philistia is the hand you can hand your enemies to.

So the cost this verse asks of you is specific: lay down the right to repay. Stop rehearsing the offense. Stop the cold war in your heart. Forgive the person you've sworn you never will — not because the wrong was small, but because the cross already cost God everything to deal with it. To cling to your enmity while standing under a cross of absorbed wrath is to insult the One who took yours. Let it go today. Name the person. Release them.

• Lord, show me where I'm holding an "everlasting enmity" — a grudge I've decided to keep — and break my grip on it.
• Thank You that the hand stretched out in judgment fell on Jesus for me; let that wonder soften how I treat the people who've wronged me.
• I hand You the person I've wanted to repay; You are a better avenger than I am, so I release them into Your hands.
• Make me an outsider brought near, like the Cherethites who served the king — keep me close to You, not fighting against You.
• Teach me to fear You rightly, knowing it is a fearful thing to fall into Your hands and a gift beyond measure that I never have to.

• Whose downfall would I secretly enjoy? What does that reveal about the enmity living in me?
• I'm quick to cheer when God judges "them." Where might I actually be standing in the Philistines' shoes?
• Is there a wrong I've turned into a permanent identity — a wound I keep open on purpose? Why am I unwilling to let God settle it?
• If God really is repaying every injustice, what am I still trying to repay myself — and what would it cost me to stop?
• The cross absorbed the wrath I deserved. Does the way I treat my enemies look like someone who actually believes that?
