Ezekiel 23:37

Read this slowly, because it's meant to knock the wind out of you. God, through Ezekiel, is summing up the case against two sisters — Israel (the northern kingdom) and Judah (the southern kingdom) — whom he's just spent an entire chapter describing as two women who sold their bodies to foreign powers and foreign gods. Verse 37 is the closing argument. Three charges, stacked: they committed adultery, blood is on their hands, and they burned their own children alive as offerings to idols.

The plain reading matters first. This isn't only a metaphor about worshipping the wrong god in your heart. Real children — flesh and blood, born to real mothers — were carried to the fires of Molech worship and killed there John Gill. God's language ("whom they bore to Me") is a gut-punch: these were his children too, given to Israel to raise, and they were handed over to be eaten by fire instead — the text's word for "food" (more on that below) makes the idols into something like predators being fed.

What's easy to miss: the "adultery" charge isn't really about sex — or rather, it's about sex as the picture, not the point. In Ezekiel's language, "committing adultery with their idols" means Israel took the covenant loyalty that belonged to God alone — the way a wife's body belongs only to her husband — and gave it to lifeless statues Strong's. And notice the order: adultery leads to blood on their hands, which leads to child sacrifice. Betrayal doesn't stay small. It compounds.

Where this sits in the book: Ezekiel 23 is the last and harshest of three long marriage-allegory chapters (16, 20, 23) where God explains, through shockingly graphic imagery, why Jerusalem is about to fall to Babylon Matthew Henry. Commentators have long debated how literally to press the "adultery" language — some read it as straightforward description of political alliances with foreign nations pictured as illicit lovers, others as also including literal sexual immorality John Gill — but nearly everyone agrees the child-sacrifice charge is not metaphor at all.

Ezekiel was a priest taken captive to Babylon in 597 BC, part of an early wave of exiles Nebuchadnezzar hauled off before he finally leveled Jerusalem in 586 BC. He's writing (or rather, preaching in vivid street-theater style) to fellow exiles sitting by the rivers of Babylon, homesick and still hoping Jerusalem would somehow survive. Ezekiel's job was to tell them: it won't, and here's why.

The historical background behind verse 37 is grim and specific. In the Valley of Hinnom just outside Jerusalem's walls, Judah's kings — most notoriously Manasseh, and going back to Ahaz — had set up worship sites for Molech, a god associated with child sacrifice. Jeremiah, preaching in Jerusalem at roughly the same time Ezekiel preached in Babylon, describes the exact same horror in Jeremiah 7:31 and Jeremiah 32:35: parents burning their sons and daughters alive there, something God says never even entered his mind to command. This wasn't a fringe cult practiced by a few extremists — it had royal backing at points in Judah's history, and it apparently continued or was remembered vividly enough that Ezekiel could assume his audience knew exactly what he meant.

"Adultery" in this chapter is also political shorthand. Israel and Judah kept making desperate alliances with Assyria and Egypt — trading loyalty to God for the promise of protection from bigger empires, the way a woman might trade her marriage vows for security from a wealthy lover. Ezekiel 23 names this explicitly earlier in the chapter (the "lovers" are Assyrian officers and Egyptian soldiers). By the time you reach verse 37, Ezekiel has stacked spiritual betrayal, political betrayal, and literal murder of children into one indictment, because in God's eyes they were never separate sins — they were one long unraveling of covenant loyalty.

The Hebrew word for "committed adultery" is נָאַף (nâʼaph, H5003) — a verb whose literal meaning is marital unfaithfulness, but which the prophets use again and again as the go-to word for Israel's unfaithfulness to God Strong's. It's not a soft word. It assumes a real marriage, real vows, and a real betrayal — not just "wandering" but choosing another lover.

The phrase "blood is on their hands" uses דָּם (dâm, H1818) for blood — the same word used for blood that's shed, that testifies, that cries out — paired with יָד (yâd, H3027), the open hand, the hand of action and power Strong's. It's a picture of hands stained, unable to be washed clean by ritual — echoed in Isaiah 1:15, where God tells worshippers he won't even look at their prayers because their hands are covered in blood.

The idols themselves are called גִּלּוּל (gillûwl, H1544) — a word whose root actually means something like "logs" or "dung pellets," a deliberately contemptuous label the prophets used instead of a respectful word for "god" Strong's. Every time you read "idols" in Ezekiel, you're reading a slur — God (through the prophet) refusing to dignify these things.

Then the devastating pair: בֵּן (bên, H1121), "sons," combined with יָלַד (yâlad, H3205), "to bear, to beget" — used here in God's own voice: sons "whom they bore to Me." These children belonged to him by covenant, by adoption, by birthright Strong's. And the final word, אׇכְלָה (ʼoklâh, H402), simply means "food" — the children are described as fed to the idols, as if the false gods were mouths to be filled Strong's. That's the ugliest word in the verse, and it's meant to be.

There's no straight-line prophecy here pointing to Jesus, so let's be honest about that. What you find instead is a wound that only the gospel can answer.

Think about what's actually happening in this verse: God calls these children "whom they bore to Me" — his own, given into human hands to be raised, and instead sacrificed to false gods, consumed by fire that was never meant for them. Now hold that next to the cross. There, for the first and only time, God gives up his own Son — not because unfaithful people demanded it of him, but because he himself chose to give what was rightfully his, to fire and judgment that we deserved, "for us all" ( Romans 8:32). Israel took children who belonged to God and destroyed them to appease false gods that could give nothing back. God took his own Son, who willingly gave himself, and let him bear real judgment so that real mercy could come out the other side. It's not a parallel of imitation — it's an inversion. Their sacrifice was theft and horror, offered to nothing, gaining nothing. His sacrifice was gift and love, offered to accomplish everything.

The "blood on their hands" language also finds its answer in Christ. Isaiah 1:15-18 pairs blood-stained hands with the promise that God can make scarlet sins white as snow — and that promise is finally cashed out in the blood of Jesus, which the New Testament says "speaks a better word" than the blood of Abel crying out for vengeance ( Hebrews 12:24). The blood Israel spilled cried out for judgment. The blood Christ shed answers that cry with mercy for everyone who turns to him.

And the marriage-unfaithfulness theme that runs through all of Ezekiel 23 finds its full resolution in Ephesians 5:25-27, where Christ loves his bride, the church, not by demanding fidelity from a distance but by giving himself up for her — to make her clean, to make her holy, to finally do what Israel could never do for herself.

This verse is hard to sit with, and it should be. It's tempting to read it and think, "well, I've never sacrificed a child to an idol," and close the book feeling safe. Don't let yourself off that easy.

Ask what you've handed over to something that promised you security, pleasure, or belonging, and quietly took what was never its to take. Ambition that ate your family's time. A relationship that cost you your integrity. A habit that consumed years you can't get back. None of these look like Molech's fires, but the logic is identical: something other than God gets fed with what actually belongs to him — your time, your children's attention, your own soul — and you tell yourself it's manageable, it's normal, everyone does it.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: it asks you to stop calling your idols by softer names. Not "priorities." Not "just how things are." Ezekiel doesn't let Israel dress this up, and he won't let you either. He names the thing plainly — adultery, bloodshed, sacrifice — because plain naming is the first step toward actually being free of it.

But don't stop at the horror. The same God who says "whom they bore to Me" over children destroyed by their own parents' idolatry is the God who, in Christ, gave up his own Son rather than give up on you. If this verse convicts you, let it — but let the conviction walk you all the way to the cross, not just to shame. He's not asking you to clean your hands well enough to earn him back. He's asking you to bring your stained hands to the only blood that actually washes.

• Thank you that where I have been unfaithful, you gave up your own Son faithfully and willingly for my sake.
• Give me the courage to name my idols out loud to you today, instead of hiding them behind respectable words.
