Ezekiel 17:15

Picture the scene God is describing through Ezekiel: a vassal king — Zedekiah, though the parable doesn't name him yet at this point in the chapter — who owes his throne and his life to the king of Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar put him there. Nebuchadnezzar made him swear an oath, in God's own name, to stay loyal. And what does this king do? He secretly sends messengers to Egypt asking for cavalry and troops, hoping to break free of Babylon's grip. Verse 15 is God, through the prophet, asking three sharp questions in a row: Will he flourish? Will he escape? Can he break a covenant and get away with it?

Notice the questions aren't really questions — they're a verdict dressed up as a question, the same rhetorical move a parent uses when they say "you think that's going to work out for you?" What's easy to miss is whose covenant this is. You'd expect God to only care about Israel breaking covenant with him. But here God is furious about a political treaty — a purely human, political oath sworn to a pagan foreign king. Why does God care so much about a promise made to Babylon? Because the oath was sworn in God's name ( 2 Chronicles 36:13 tells us this directly), which means breaking it isn't just bad politics, it's treating God's name as worthless. Matthew Henry

This verse sits inside a larger parable (two eagles and a vine, Ezekiel 17:1–10) where God explains, in plain terms, why Jerusalem's fall isn't bad luck or bad strategy but the direct, foreseeable consequence of broken faith. There's no major Christian disagreement on the historical reading here — most traditions read this as God vindicating Babylon's judgment on Judah's last king. The real weight of the disagreement, if there is one, comes later in the chapter over how directly verses 22–24 point to Jesus.

Ezekiel was a priest turned prophet, already deported to Babylon in 597 BC along with King Jehoiachin and thousands of Jerusalem's elite — a first wave of exile before the final destruction. He's writing from a refugee camp on a canal in Babylon, roughly around 592–591 BC, to fellow exiles who are anxious for news from home.

Back in Jerusalem, Nebuchadnezzar had installed a puppet king, Zedekiah — Jehoiachin's uncle — and made him swear a personal loyalty oath, sworn in the name of the Lord, to keep Judah as a quiet, tribute-paying satellite state ( 2 Chronicles 36:13). That was the deal: Zedekiah keeps his crown, Babylon keeps the peace.

But Zedekiah, likely egged on by nationalist advisors who dreamed of independence, started secretly courting Egypt — the other regional superpower — sending envoys to ask for horses and soldiers to back a revolt against Babylon Adam Clarke. This was a live, breaking situation for Ezekiel's first readers, not ancient history; Jeremiah, prophesying at the same time back in Jerusalem, was warning the same king that this gamble would end in disaster ( Jeremiah 38:18, 38:23).

It's worth feeling how reckless this was. Egypt had a reputation — right or wrong — for being an unreliable ally who talked big and folded when the fighting got real; the ancient historian Diodorus Siculus describes Egypt's vast stables of war-horses, so on paper the alliance looked strong Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. And centuries earlier, Moses had specifically warned Israel's future kings never to go back to Egypt for horses ( Deuteronomy 17:16) — so Zedekiah wasn't just breaking a treaty with Babylon, he was repeating an old, named sin. The gamble failed. Egypt's army showed up, Babylon briefly lifted the siege, then came back and finished the job — burning Jerusalem and the Temple in 586 BC, blinding Zedekiah, and marching the rest of the nation into exile ( 2 Kings 24:20, Jeremiah 52:3).

The verb at the center of this whole scene is מָרַד (mârad, H4775) — "to rebel." Strong's It's a blunt word, used elsewhere for open revolt against a ruling power. There's no ambiguity or softening in it; Ezekiel isn't describing a diplomatic misunderstanding, he's naming a revolt.

Then there's the covenant-breaking language: פָּרַר (pârar, H6565), meaning to break, violate, or frustrate something — paired with בְּרִית (bᵉrîyth, H1285), "covenant." Strong's What's striking is the root idea behind bᵉrîyth itself: it comes from a word meaning "to cut," because covenants in this world were sealed by cutting animals in half and walking between the pieces — a graphic way of saying "may this happen to me if I break my word." So "breaking" a covenant that was itself formed by "cutting" carries a grim, physical undertone: this oath was sealed in blood, and Zedekiah is tearing it apart.

The final word worth sitting with is מָלַט (mâlaṭ, H4422) — "to escape," but its root sense is "to be slippery, smooth" — like something wriggling free from your grip. Strong's God's question, "can he escape?", uses a word that pictures a man trying to slip out of a hand closing around him. The answer the chapter gives, repeated in verse 18, is that he cannot — the grip holds.

Also notice סוּס (çûwç, H5483), "horse," and רַב עַם (rab + ʻam, H7227 + H5971), "many/great people" — the exact language of military strength Zedekiah went to Egypt to buy, and the exact thing Deuteronomy 17:16 had warned Israel's kings never to chase.

Here's the hard, honest truth: verse 15 itself isn't a prophecy about Jesus. It's a courtroom question aimed at a failed king who broke faith and paid for it. But stay in the chapter, because Ezekiel doesn't leave you there. After tearing down this false king's broken promises, God makes an astonishing promise of his own in Ezekiel 17:22–24 — he will take a tender sprig from the very top of the cedar (the royal line of David, the same family Zedekiah just disgraced) and plant it himself on a high mountain, where it will grow into a great tree sheltering birds of every kind.

That's not incidental language. It's God saying: this dynasty is going down in ruin because of unfaithful men, but I am not done with this family. I will do what these kings could not do — keep faith, without fail, forever.

That promise lands, centuries later, in a manger and then a cross, in the one king from David's line who never once broke covenant — not with God, not with anyone. Where Zedekiah swore an oath in God's name and shredded it to save his own skin, Jesus prayed "not my will, but yours be done" ( Luke 22:42) and kept it all the way to death. Where Zedekiah tried to escape Babylon's grip through Egypt's horses and failed, Jesus didn't try to escape the grip closing around him at all — he walked into it, and came out the other side alive, breaking the one power (death) no human king ever could.

So this verse's real gift to you is contrast: it shows you exactly what covenant-breaking looks like, so that when you meet the covenant-keeper, you recognize how rare and costly his faithfulness really is.

Be honest with yourself for a second: how many promises have you made to God — in a hard season, at an altar, in a 2 a.m. prayer — that you've quietly started hedging on the moment things got uncomfortable? Zedekiah's sin wasn't some exotic ancient crime. It's the very ordinary sin of saying "yes, I will" and then, when loyalty gets expensive, going looking for a side door.

That's what Egypt was for him — not a solution, just a side door. A way to keep the appearance of the deal while quietly working an escape hatch. And God's question cuts right through the self-deception: will he escape? can he break a covenant and get away with it? The whole point of asking is that the answer is obviously no — and Zedekiah knew it was no, and did it anyway, because in the moment, the side door always looks more promising than it is.

Where's your Egypt? Where have you made an oath — to your spouse, to sobriety, to God himself — and started quietly cultivating a backup plan the moment loyalty started to cost you something real? This verse doesn't let you stay comfortable with that. It says the backup plan won't save you; it will just add a second betrayal on top of the first.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: stop hedging. Whatever covenant you're currently one foot out the door of, God is asking you to walk back in with both feet, even though it's expensive, even though the side door is right there and easy. The good news buried underneath the warning is that the God who judged Zedekiah's broken faith is the same God who, in Christ, kept faith perfectly on your behalf — so your hope was never supposed to rest on your own grip holding steady, but on his.

• Lord, show me the places where I've said "yes" to you and then quietly gone looking for an exit when it got costly.
• Forgive me for the times I've treated my promises to you as flexible instead of binding.
• Thank you that Jesus kept covenant perfectly when I could not, and that my standing with you rests on his faithfulness, not mine.
• Give me the courage to walk back into the commitments I've been hedging on, even when it costs me something real.
• Root out any "Egypt" in my life — any backup plan I'm trusting instead of trusting you.

• What's the "Egypt" in your life right now — the backup plan you're quietly cultivating instead of trusting the commitment you already made?
• When was the last time you broke a promise to God and told yourself it didn't really count?
• Zedekiah kept the appearance of loyalty to Babylon while secretly working against it — where in your own life is your outward compliance hiding an inward divided heart?
• Does it comfort you or unsettle you that God cared this much about a political oath sworn in his name? What does that say about how seriously he takes your word?
• If Jesus is the covenant-keeper Zedekiah failed to be, where do you need to actually rest in that instead of trying to secure your own escape hatch?
