Ezekiel 15:7

Pull back and look at where you are: Ezekiel 15 is a whole chapter built around one question — what good is a vine's wood? Not for building, not for furniture, barely even good for a peg to hang a coat on. Its only real use is bearing fruit, and if it doesn't do that, the wood is fit for nothing but the fire. That's the picture God has just walked Ezekiel through in verses 1-6: Jerusalem isn't a fruitless generic tree God is being harsh with — it's a vine, the very image Israel used for itself, the plant that only has one job. And it hasn't done that job.

Verse 7 is where the metaphor turns into a verdict spoken directly. "I will set My face against them" is court language — not a father looking away in disappointment, but a judge turning to look straight at the accused Strong's. This phrase shows up again and again in Ezekiel (you'll notice it almost word-for-word in Ezekiel 14:8 and Ezekiel 11:10) as God's signature move when he's done being patient.

Then comes the gut-punch: "though they may have escaped the fire, yet another fire will consume them." Some Jerusalemites had already lived through one disaster — likely the first Babylonian siege and deportation in 597 BC — and thought they'd dodged the worst of it. Ezekiel says: no, you didn't escape, you just got a delay. A second fire is coming for what the first one left standing Tyndale. This is almost certainly pointing forward to the total destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC.

And the refrain that closes it — "you will know that I am the LORD" — isn't a threat tacked on for effect. It's the whole point of the book of Ezekiel. Judgment, like mercy, is one of the ways God makes himself known. Where Christians disagree is mostly on tone: some read this as pure retributive wrath, others (rightly, I think) hear real grief underneath it — a God who has spent chapters pleading before he ever speaks like this Matthew Henry.

Ezekiel was a priest turned prophet, deported to Babylon in 597 BC along with King Jehoiachin and thousands of Jerusalem's leading citizens — the first wave of exile, years before the city itself fell. He's writing from a refugee camp on the banks of a Babylonian canal, prophesying to fellow exiles who still believed Jerusalem was untouchable because, well, it had the Temple in it. God lives there — surely he wouldn't let it burn.

This chapter comes from that stretch of Ezekiel's ministry (roughly 593-586 BC) where he's dismantling that false comfort piece by piece. The exiles in Babylon had already lived through one national catastrophe — being marched hundreds of miles from home — and many assumed the worst was over. Back in Jerusalem, the people who were not deported were telling themselves an even more dangerous story: that they were the lucky ones, the ones God had spared, the good grapes still on the vine.

Ezekiel 15 demolishes that. He's speaking into a very specific piece of political theology: the belief that Jerusalem's covenant status made it fireproof. The historical reality bearing down on everyone in this scene is Nebuchadnezzar's Babylon — the dominant empire of the day, already having crushed Judah once and now watching to see if the puppet king Zedekiah would rebel again. He did. And when he did, in 586 BC, Babylon came back and burned the city and the Temple to the ground, exactly as this "second fire" warns Tyndale. The people in Jerusalem who thought they'd escaped judgment because they hadn't been deported in 597 BC were about to learn they'd only been given a longer wick.

The phrase "set My face" comes from two words working together: נָתַן (nathan, H5414), "to give or put," and פָּנִים (panim, H6440), "face." Literally, "I will put my face against them." In Hebrew idiom, your face turning toward someone means attention, favor, presence — think of the priestly blessing, "the LORD make his face shine upon you." So when God says he's setting his face against Israel instead of toward them, he's flipping the very picture of blessing into its opposite Strong's. This isn't God being absent or indifferent; it's worse — it's God fully present and fully opposed.

אֵשׁ (esh, H784) is just "fire," but notice the verb attached to the second fire: אָכַל (akal, H398), "to eat, to devour." Fire doesn't just touch this vine, it eats it — consumes it completely, nothing left to salvage. That's deliberate escalation from the first fire to the second.

And the closing line runs on יָדַע (yada, H3045), "to know" — not just intellectual knowledge but the kind of knowing that comes from experience, from being on the receiving end of something. "You will know that I am the LORD" (יְהֹוָה, YHWH, H3068) doesn't mean "you'll learn a fact about me." It means "you will find out, in your own body and history, who I actually am." That refrain runs through Ezekiel like a heartbeat — God insisting that even his judgment is revelation, not just punishment Strong's.

This is where John's Gospel picks up the exact image Ezekiel is destroying. Israel called itself the vine — Ezekiel 15 says that vine has failed at the one thing it existed for and is headed for the fire. Centuries later, standing with his disciples, Jesus says: "I am the true vine" ( John 15:1). Not "I am a vine" among many, but the true one — the one that finally does what Israel's vine was supposed to do. Where Jerusalem bore no fruit and was handed over to fire, Jesus bears fruit perfectly and is the one branch you can be grafted into and actually live.

But don't rush past the fire too fast. Look at what Jesus says just a few verses later in that same chapter: "If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire, and burned" ( John 15:6). He's quoting Ezekiel's own image back into a New Testament setting. The warning of chapter 15 didn't expire with Jerusalem in 586 BC — Jesus keeps the vine-and-fire logic fully alive, and locates himself as the only place a branch can be safe from it.

And that phrase "you will know that I am the LORD" — the whole reason Ezekiel exists — finds its answer in a person. Jesus is repeatedly described, especially in John's Gospel, as the one who reveals the Father, who makes God knowable not through disaster this time but through a face turned toward us instead of against us. At the cross, in one sense, the face of God's judgment that fell on Jerusalem falls instead on Jesus — he absorbs the fire so that those grafted into him don't have to escape one fire only to meet another.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts in front of you: what fire have you already survived, and what have you concluded from surviving it? Because the people Ezekiel is talking to had lived through a national disaster and drawn exactly the wrong lesson — that surviving meant they were fine, that God's severity had already been spent on someone else, that they could relax now.

You do this too. Everybody does. A health scare passes, a marriage nearly ends but doesn't, a season of consequences almost catches up with you and then somehow doesn't — and the temptation every single time is to read that as acquittal instead of as mercy. "I got away with it" quietly becomes your theology. Ezekiel 15:7 says: no, you didn't get away with anything. You were given more time. Time is not the same thing as innocence.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty about fruit. Not "did I survive," but "am I actually bearing anything real" — love, obedience, changed behavior, a life that looks different because God is in it. A vine that produces nothing isn't neutral. It's firewood waiting for a match. That's a hard thing to sit with, and I'm not going to soften it, because Ezekiel doesn't soften it either.

But remember where this lands in the fuller story: there is a vine that doesn't fail, and you're invited into it, not by being impressive enough to earn a spot, but by staying attached — remaining, as Jesus puts it. So the real question tonight isn't "have I dodged disaster." It's "am I actually joined to the vine that bears fruit," or am I just a branch that's been lucky so far.

• Lord, show me where I've mistaken surviving something hard for being right with you — expose that lie in me.
• Turn your face toward me, not because I've earned it, but because you turned your judgment onto Jesus instead of me.
• Search me for fruitlessness — the places in my life that look like a vine but produce nothing real.
• Teach me to actually know you, not just know facts about you, the way this verse promises Israel would "know" you through consequence.
• Graft me deeper into Christ the true vine, so I'm not a branch waiting for fire but one that's actually alive.

• What disaster have you already survived, and what did you quietly decide about yourself or about God because of it?
• Where in your life would God, looking honestly, say "no fruit here" — and how long have you avoided admitting that?
• Does the idea of God's face being "against" someone feel unbelievable to you, or does it feel more true of your own life than you'd like to admit?
• If you're leaning on being "one of the good ones" rather than being attached to Christ, what would it look like to actually notice that and change it this week?
• When you read that Jesus absorbed this fire instead of you, do you actually feel relief, or has that truth gone numb from familiarity?
