Jeremiah 50:20

Pick up the scene: this verse sits right in the middle of a long, blistering prophecy against Babylon ( Jeremiah 50–51), the empire that had just crushed Jerusalem and marched its people off in chains. You'd expect this section to be all about Babylon's doom — and it is — but right here God pauses and turns the camera toward his own people. "In those days and at that time" is a phrase Jeremiah uses elsewhere for a future turning point (you see it again in Jeremiah 33:15, tied to the coming righteous "Branch" from David's line, and back in Jeremiah 50:4, where Israel and Judah come home weeping and seeking the Lord). So this isn't a vague someday — it's tied to a specific, promised future.

Here's the line that should stop you: God says a search will be made for Israel's guilt and Judah's sins — and none will be found. Not "overlooked." Not "excused." Searched for, and not there. That's a much bigger claim than "God decided to let it slide." The text pictures an actual investigation, a full audit of the moral books, coming up empty. Why? The verse itself answers: "for I will forgive the remnant I preserve." The forgiving isn't the result of the search failing — the search fails because God has already forgiven. The sin isn't hidden from view; it's gone from the record John Gill.

Notice too who's being talked about: "the remnant I preserve" — a specific, chosen group, not everyone indiscriminately. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown and others read this as looking beyond the return from Babylon in the 6th century BC toward a still-future, fuller restoration of God's people — since Israel and Judah, split apart for centuries, are pictured here reunited and wholly cleansed, which never fully happened in the return under Cyrus Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. That's the one real point of disagreement: some read this as fulfilled (at least partly) in the return from exile, others see it stretching forward to something the return only foreshadowed.

Jeremiah was a priest's son from the little town of Anathoth, just north of Jerusalem, who spent roughly forty years (from about 627 BC to sometime after 586 BC) telling his own people news nobody wanted to hear: Jerusalem was going to fall, and the very empire God was using to punish them — Babylon — would itself be destroyed later. Chapters 50 and 51 are that second half of the message, and most scholars think this material was written or finalized sometime after 586 BC, once Jerusalem had already been leveled and its survivors dragged off to Babylon.

Picture the audience: Jewish exiles sitting by the rivers of Babylon (literally — see Psalm 137), watching the empire that destroyed their temple throw lavish parties, build hanging gardens, and act like it would rule forever. Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar and his successors looked permanent and invincible. If you were an Israelite in that crowd, the natural conclusion was that your God had lost, or at best, that your sin was too big to ever be undone — you were the losers, chained to the winners, and that was just how it was going to stay.

Into that despair, Jeremiah says two things at once: Babylon's fall is coming (it did, in 539 BC, when the Persian king Cyrus took the city without much of a fight), and — more startling — God is not done with Israel and Judah. He's not just going to let them trickle home; he's going to run a full search of their moral record and find it clean. This is a message for people who thought their sin had permanently disqualified them, spoken into a moment when it looked like they'd been discarded for good.

The phrase that opens the verse, בַּיָּמִים הָהֵם וּבָעֵת הַהִיא — built from יוֹם (yôwm, H3117, "day") and עֵת (ʻêth, H6256, "time") — is Jeremiah's way of pointing at a specific, appointed turning point in the future, not just "someday, whenever" Strong's. He uses this exact phrase as a signpost elsewhere ( Jeremiah 33:15), always tied to a real, coming act of God.

The key verb is בָּקַשׁ (bâqash, H1245) — "to search out," used for hunting something down thoroughly, even the way you'd search in worship or prayer Strong's. This isn't a careless glance; it's a deliberate, exhaustive investigation. Paired with it is מָצָא (mâtsâʼ, H4672), "to find or attain" — so the sentence structure is: a real search happens, and the result is nothing found. That combination is what makes this verse so striking — it's not God averting his eyes, it's God looking hard and there being nothing there to see.

The two sin-words matter too: עָוֺן (ʻâvôn, H5771) means moral crookedness, perversity — the bent-ness of guilt itself — while חַטָּאָה (chaṭṭâʼâh, H2403) covers "offense," missing the mark, and even the guilt-offering made to atone for it Strong's. Between them you get the whole range: the twisted inner condition and the specific failures it produces.

And the reason given uses סָלַח (çâlach, H5545), "to forgive" — a verb used in the Hebrew Bible only of God forgiving; humans never çâlach each other Strong's. Finally, שָׁאַר (shâʼar, H7604), "remnant, what's left over," roots the promise in a specific, preserved people — not a blanket amnesty for everyone, but a chosen, kept-back group Strong's.

Here's the question this verse doesn't answer on its own: how can God search for real guilt — guilt that genuinely happened — and find nothing? God isn't lying, and he isn't forgetful. The sin was real. So where did it go?

The rest of Scripture answers that question, and it answers it at the cross. Paul says God presented Jesus "as a sacrifice of atonement... to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished" ( Romans 3:25-26) — in other words, God's ability to search Israel's record and find it clean isn't because he ignored the debt, it's because someone else paid it. The guilt didn't evaporate; it was transferred, absorbed, dealt with in full — the way Isaiah 53:6 puts it, "the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all." John Gill's old instinct here is exactly right: the sins aren't found because they've been "removed... to Christ, and satisfaction made for them by him" John Gill.

This is also why Jeremiah himself, just a few chapters earlier, promised a "new covenant" where God would forgive iniquity and "remember their sins no more" ( Jeremiah 31:34) — and Jesus, at the Last Supper, took the cup and said "this is my blood of the covenant" ( Matthew 26:28), deliberately picking up that exact promise and putting his own death under it. Jeremiah 50:20 is that same new-covenant hope, spoken to exiles who felt permanently disqualified, and it lands, centuries later, in an upper room and on a hill outside Jerusalem.

And notice — the promise is to "the remnant I preserve." That's not everyone by default; it's the ones God has set apart. Paul will later use that very idea — a remnant chosen by grace ( Romans 11:5) — to describe everyone, Jew and Gentile, who belongs to Christ. If you're in Christ, this verse is describing your record, right now.

Sit with that image for a second — a search party sent out to find your guilt, combing through every file, every memory, every failure you've ever tried to bury, and coming back empty-handed. Not because they didn't look hard. Because it's actually not there anymore.

If you're anything like most people, some part of you doesn't believe that's possible for you specifically. You believe it in theory, for other people, for "sinners" in general — but you keep a private ledger somewhere, a running tally of the things you're sure still count against you. The affair nobody knows about. The way you treated your kid last week. The thing you did in college you still can't say out loud. You've quietly decided the search would find something, even if grace covers everyone else.

This verse is aimed directly at that quiet unbelief. It doesn't say your sin was small. It doesn't say it didn't matter. It says God looked — really looked — and it wasn't there to find, because it had already been dealt with somewhere else.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty in both directions. First, honesty about the debt — you don't get to minimize what you did in order to feel forgivable; the search is real because the guilt was real. And second, honesty about the forgiveness — you don't get to keep re-opening a case God has already closed. Every time you rehearse old guilt as if it's still active against you, you're contradicting God's own verdict. That's not humility. That's unbelief dressed up as humility. Let the search come up empty. Stop running your own investigation.

• Lord, thank you that when you search for my guilt in Christ, you find nothing to hold against me — help me actually believe that today, not just recite it.
• I confess the sins I keep re-litigating in my own mind as if they're still on the books; forgive me, and help me let them stay buried where you've put them.
• Thank you that I'm part of the remnant you preserve — not because I earned it, but because you chose to keep me for yourself.
• Give me the same certainty Jeremiah's exiles needed: that no empire, no failure, no past is bigger than your promise to forgive and restore.
• Teach me to forgive others the way you've forgiven me — completely, without keeping a private file open on them.

• Where in your life are you living like an exile far from home, when this verse says God has already promised the homecoming?
