Jeremiah 48:26

God is speaking through Jeremiah, and the command is jarring: "Make him drunk." Moab — the nation just east of the Dead Sea — is pictured as a man who's about to be forced to drink a cup he can't refuse, until he's stumbling, sick, and finally face-down in his own vomit. That's not poetic decoration. It's the picture of total, humiliating collapse — a man who thought he was in control of the party now can't stand up.

Notice why this is happening: "because he has magnified himself against the LORD." Not against Israel first — against the LORD. Moab's real crime wasn't just gloating over a fallen neighbor; it was treating itself as bigger than God Tyndale. That word "magnified" (we'll look at it closely below) is the language of puffing yourself up, and the text says Moab puffed himself up against the very God who made him.

The last line — "he will also become a laughingstock" — has a sting in it once you read the next verse (48:27), where God reminds Moab: you laughed at Israel when Israel fell. Now the laughter comes back around. This is retribution that fits the crime exactly Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Where does this sit in Jeremiah? Chapters 46–51 are a long series of oracles against foreign nations — Egypt, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Babylon and more — God's courtroom verdicts on the whole world, not just his covenant people. Jeremiah 48 is entirely about Moab's coming ruin at the hands of the Babylonian army, decades after Assyria had already battered them once Matthew Henry. Commentators don't disagree much on the basic meaning here — the drunkenness is judgment, not literal wine — but there's a real question worth sitting with: is God simply describing Moab's self-inflicted collapse (pride destroys itself), or actively pouring out the cup himself? The verse leans toward the second — God is the one who "makes him drunk." That's uncomfortable, and it's meant to be.

Jeremiah prophesied in Jerusalem roughly 627–586 BC, right up through the city's destruction by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. Chapters 46–51 are dated a little differently — they're oracles against the nations, likely compiled and delivered across Jeremiah's ministry but pointing toward the years just before and after Jerusalem fell in 586 BC.

Moab was Israel's neighbor across the Dead Sea, descended ( Genesis 19 tells us) from Lot's son by his own daughter — a shameful, tangled family origin the text of Jeremiah doesn't let you forget Strong's. For centuries Moab and Israel had a complicated relationship: sometimes trading, sometimes at war, always aware of being distant cousins. When Assyria crushed the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BC, and later when Babylon crushed the southern kingdom of Judah, Moab didn't mourn — they celebrated. Jeremiah 48:27 makes this explicit: Moab shook with laughter every time Israel's name came up in disaster.

That's the backdrop for chapter 48. The prophecy is that Babylon — the same empire that flattened Jerusalem — was coming for Moab too, and would do it thoroughly. Matthew Henry notes this happened about five years after Nebuchadnezzar's general Nebuzaradan destroyed Jerusalem Matthew Henry, meaning Moab got to watch Judah's ruin first, gloat over it, and then face the exact same army themselves.

For the original readers — Jewish exiles or survivors sitting in the rubble of Jerusalem — this chapter wasn't abstract theology. It was cold comfort and hard justice at once: yes, God judged us, but he is not done settling accounts, and the nations who laughed at our fall will get no free pass. Moab's confidence came from geography (natural rock fortresses) and prosperity (vineyards, farmland, trade routes) — the very things Jeremiah says will be stripped away.

The command "make him drunk" comes from שָׁכַר (shâkar, H7937) — the ordinary word for getting tipsy, but here used as a weapon: God is going to satiate Moab with something intoxicating until he can't function Strong's. It's the same verb-family behind other "cup of wrath" passages, like Jeremiah 51:39 against Babylon.

The reason for the judgment is that Moab "גָּדַל" (gâdal, H1431) himself against the Lord — a root that literally means to grow large, to twist and thicken, and by extension to swell with pride or honor Strong's. Moab didn't just feel proud; the word pictures something inflating past its natural size, like a body swelling past what it can carry. That's exactly the kind of self-magnifying that gets punctured in Daniel 5:23, where Belshazzar "exalted himself against the Lord of heaven."

Then there's the vivid, almost crude pair: סָפַק (çâphaq, H5606), which can mean clapping hands in mockery or — in its darker sense — vomiting from excess, and קֵא (qêʼ, H6892), the plain word for vomit Strong's. Jeremiah isn't softening this. The Hebrew wants you to see and smell the mess.

Finally, "laughingstock" is שְׂחוֹק (sᵉchôwq, H7814) — laughter, but the text notes it can mean either merriment or defiance Strong's. It's the same word-root behind Moab's own mocking laughter over Israel in verse 27. God is handing Moab back its own word.

And underneath it all stands יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) — the covenant name, the self-existent One Strong's. Moab's sin wasn't against an abstract force; it was against the God who has a name and keeps his word.

The cup of God's wrath that Moab is forced to drink here isn't a one-off image in Scripture — it runs like a vein through the prophets ( Jeremiah 51:7, Habakkuk 2:16, Lamentations 4:21) and shows up again in Revelation as the cup of God's fury poured out on evil. It's the picture Scripture uses for what happens when a creature refuses to stay in its place before its Creator: judgment comes, and it comes as something you have to drink, something forced down, something that leaves you exposed and humiliated rather than in control.

Now hold that next to Gethsemane. Jesus, praying in the garden the night before he died, asks the Father: "if it is possible, let this cup pass from me" ( Matthew 26:39). It's the same image — the cup of wrath, the cup Moab drinks for his pride, the cup Babylon drinks for hers. But here's the staggering turn: Jesus, who never once magnified himself against God, who is God, drinks the cup that people like Moab — and you, and me — actually deserve for our own self-inflating pride. He doesn't drink it because he's proud. He drinks it because we are, and someone has to pay for that swelling arrogance that puts self where God belongs.

Moab's judgment is exact and deserved: pride gets humiliation, mockery gets mocked in return. That's justice, plain and fair. The gospel doesn't cancel that justice — it answers it differently for those who trust Christ. The cup still gets poured out. But at the cross, it was poured onto Jesus instead of onto everyone who now hides in him. That's not a loophole; it cost him everything, down to sweating blood in that garden.

So when you read "he has magnified himself against the LORD," don't just see Moab. See the universal human instinct to swell past our size before God — and see that Jesus is the only one who never did it, and the only one who volunteered to drink the cup anyway.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts in front of you: where have you magnified yourself against the Lord? Not necessarily with fists raised at heaven — Moab's sin was quieter than that. It was confidence. Security. Looking at someone else's collapse and feeling, underneath the sympathy you performed, a flicker of glad it's not me, I'm doing fine. Moab had rock fortresses and vineyards and trade routes, and it made him forget he was answerable to anyone.

You have your own version of Moab's rock fortresses — the job, the bank account, the relationship, the reputation, the sense that your life is basically under control and other people's messes are their own fault. This verse says: that swelling confidence, if it pushes God to the margins of your life, is exactly what got Moab a mouthful of his own vomit. God is not neutral about pride. He doesn't find it charming or harmless. He finds it worth naming by name and answering directly.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty — actual, specific honesty, not vague spiritual humility. Name the place where you've quietly decided you don't need God's help, where your confidence in yourself has crowded out your need for him. Name the person you've secretly laughed at or looked down on in their disaster, the way Moab laughed at Israel. That laughter has a way of coming home.

But don't stop at the warning. Remember who drank the cup you deserved. The whole reason you can bring this pride to God honestly, instead of hiding it, is that Jesus already absorbed the wrath your self-magnifying earns. Confession isn't groveling before an angry judge — it's coming clean with someone who already paid the bill.

• Lord, show me the specific places where I've magnified myself against you — where my confidence has quietly pushed you to the edge of my life.
• Forgive me for the times I've laughed, even quietly, at someone else's downfall instead of feeling the weight of it.
• Thank you that Jesus drank the cup of judgment I actually deserve, so I don't have to face what Moab faced.
• Give me the humility to stay small before you on purpose, before circumstances force me small.
• Teach me to fear you rightly — not with dread, but with the honest respect that keeps pride from swelling in me unnoticed.
