Jeremiah 47:4

Pull back and look at what's actually on the page: God has set a day on the calendar — "the day has come" — and on that day the Philistines, a whole people, are going to be wiped out. Not just beaten in a battle. "Destroy" here is a strong word, the kind used for ravaging, tearing apart something that thought it was solid Strong's. And it's not just the Philistines dying alone. Tyre and Sidon, two famous port cities up the coast (modern-day Lebanon), are named too — but notice how they're named. It's not "Tyre and Sidon will be destroyed." It's that every ally who might come running to help the Philistines gets cut off first. Picture a man surrounded, watching every friend who might have rescued him get taken out one by one before the enemy even reaches him. That's the picture. The word for "cut off" (כָּרַת, karath) is the same word used for cutting a covenant — literally slicing an animal in two when two parties made an alliance Strong's. There's a grim irony buried here: the very word for making an alliance is the word for ending one.

Then the verse zooms out to origins: these Philistines came from Caphtor — likely Crete, or somewhere in that Aegean world Tyndale. Genesis 10:13-14 and Amos 9:7 both trace them there. Jeremiah is saying: the people who arrived on these shores hundreds of years ago, planted themselves, became a fearsome regional power (think Goliath, think the Ark of the Covenant captured in 1 Samuel 4) — even they are not permanent. Only a "remnant" of them is left by Jeremiah's day, and now even that remnant is going.

This sits inside a stretch of Jeremiah (chapters 46-51) where the prophet turns from Judah and pronounces judgment on the surrounding nations — Egypt, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Babylon itself. It's Jeremiah's way of saying: God is not a local deity managing one tribe's affairs. He's running the whole board. There's no real doctrinal fight among Christian traditions over this verse — the disagreement, if any, is historical: which invading army is in view (Egypt under Pharaoh Necho, or Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar), a question the text itself leaves a little open Matthew Henry.

Jeremiah prophesied in Jerusalem roughly 627-580 BC, through the last decades before the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the city in 586 BC and hauled its people off into exile. This particular oracle ( Jeremiah 47) is aimed not at Judah but at the Philistines — the people living in coastal cities like Gaza, Ashkelon, and Ashdod, just southwest of Judah along the Mediterranean.

The opening verse of the chapter (47:1) says this word came "before Pharaoh attacked Gaza" — so something is stirring in Egypt, likely Pharaoh Necho II's campaign north around 609-605 BC, right as the old Assyrian empire was collapsing and Babylon was rising to take its place. The Philistines and their northern neighbors, the Phoenician port cities of Tyre and Sidon, were caught in the middle of a superpower collision — Egypt pushing north, Babylon pushing south and west. Whoever won that fight would roll over everyone in between, and the little coastal kingdoms had no army big enough to stop either giant.

The Philistines themselves had a long, tangled history with Israel — they were the arch-enemies of the book of Judges and 1 Samuel, the people of Goliath, Dagon, and the five lords of the Philistine cities. But by Jeremiah's day, centuries of wars with Egypt, Assyria, and now Babylon had ground them down to a shadow of their former strength — hence Jeremiah calling them a "remnant." Historically, this prophecy found its fulfillment when Nebuchadnezzar swept through the region in 604 BC and again in later campaigns, and Philistine cities like Ashkelon were burned and their population deported — after which the Philistines essentially vanish from history as a distinct people. Tyre, similarly, would face a brutal thirteen-year siege by Nebuchadnezzar not long after this John Gill.

The verse opens with יוֹם (yôwm, H3117) — "the day." In Hebrew prophetic speech, "the day" almost always means more than twenty-four hours; it's shorthand for a decisive moment when God finally acts on something he's been patient about for a long time Strong's. Pair that with בּוֹא (bôwʼ, H935), "has come" — the day isn't approaching, it has arrived, like a bill finally coming due.

The verb for destruction is שָׁדַד (shâdad, H7703) — its root idea is being "burly" or forcefully overpowering something, and it's regularly used for violent ravaging, not a polite defeat Strong's. This is the word for cities stripped bare.

Then there's כָּרַת (kârath, H3772), "cut off." This word is loaded because it's the exact verb Hebrew uses for "cutting a covenant" (as in "cut a deal") — going back to the ancient practice of slicing an animal in two and walking between the pieces to seal an alliance Strong's. Jeremiah is using covenant-language to describe the unmaking of alliances. Every ally (עָזַר, ʻâzar, H5826 — "to help, protect") that Tyre and Sidon might lean on gets sliced away.

Finally, שְׁאֵרִית (shᵉʼêrîyth, H7611) and שָׂרִיד (sârîyd, H8300) both mean "remnant, survivor" — the leftover portion after a disaster has already thinned a people out Strong's. And כַּפְתֹּר (Kaphtôr, H3731) names their ancestral homeland, likely Crete — its root meaning, "wreath-shaped island," is a small, almost tender detail buried in a verse about annihilation Strong's.

There's no direct prophecy of Jesus tucked into this verse — it's aimed at a Bronze-Age people from Crete, not the Messiah. But there is a thread here that runs straight to him, and it's worth following.

The whole point of this oracle is that God has a day set for every proud, self-sufficient power, and no alliance — no coalition of Tyre, Sidon, and Philistia — can outlast it. Psalm 37:13 says God laughs because "their day is coming." That's not cruelty; it's the settled confidence of someone who knows how the story ends. Jeremiah 46:10, just one chapter earlier, calls this kind of day "a day of vengeance against His foes" belonging to "the LORD of Hosts." That language — the Lord's day of reckoning against every nation — gets picked up and intensified across the whole Bible, and it comes to a point in the New Testament in the person of Christ, who Paul says has been appointed to "judge the world in righteousness" ( Acts 17:31), and who John pictures returning as the rider on the white horse in Revelation 19:11-16, treading the winepress of God's wrath.

Here's the honest tension, though: this same Jesus is also the one who, in his first coming, absorbed that day of judgment on behalf of anyone who would run to him — Jew or Gentile, Israelite or Philistine. The God who says in Jeremiah 47 "the day has come to destroy" is the same God who, in Christ, took the destroying day onto himself at the cross so that ruined, remnant peoples — people with nothing left, no allies, no strength — could be brought in rather than cut off. Ephesians 2:11-13 makes exactly this move: Gentiles who were once "far off," strangers to the covenants, brought near by Jesus' blood. The Philistines never got that offer in their lifetime. But the pattern their story sets — judgment on the proud, mercy available to the ruined — finds its full shape in him.

Here's what unsettles me about this verse: the Philistines had centuries. They weren't a flash-in-the-pan people. They built cities, armies, a whole culture, and it all felt permanent to them right up until it wasn't. And their allies — Tyre and Sidon, wealthy trading powers with ships all over the Mediterranean — got cut off one by one, like the last lights going out in a house.

You and I build the same kind of permanence in our heads. Our health, our savings, our reputation, the relationships we're counting on to catch us if we fall — we treat them like bedrock. This verse is a hand on your shoulder saying: it's not bedrock. God has appointed days for things you're leaning on right now, and you don't get to see the calendar.

That's not meant to make you anxious. It's meant to relocate your trust. The cost this verse asks of you is specific: stop quietly building your security out of things that have an expiration date, and put your weight on the one thing in this story that doesn't collapse — God himself, and specifically the mercy he's shown in Christ. That's uncomfortable because it means admitting your allies — money, achievement, other people's approval — aren't as solid as they feel today.

And there's a second, harder edge here. This verse is God speaking judgment over an entire people who did real, ugly things to Israel across centuries. It's tempting to read this only as a comfort — "God will judge my enemies" — and stop there. But the same God who has a day for the Philistines has a day for you too. The question this verse leaves in your lap isn't "who deserves this?" It's "have I run to the mercy that's available before my own day comes?"

• Lord, show me what I'm quietly treating as permanent that isn't — help me hold it loosely.
• I confess I'd rather read this as good news for my enemies than a warning for myself; humble me.
• Thank you that you have set days for judgment, and that in Christ you also set a day for mercy — help me live inside that mercy today.
• Give me the same confidence the psalmist had — that you laugh at the arrogance of powers that look unstoppable — so I don't fear what looks permanent around me.
• Where I've built alliances with things that will one day be cut off, redirect my trust to you alone.

• What in your life right now do you treat as permanent — an income, a relationship, a reputation — that this verse quietly warns you isn't?
• When you read about a whole ancient people being destroyed, is your first reaction relief, discomfort, or indifference — and what does that reaction tell you about your own heart?
• Who are the "allies" you're counting on to rescue you if things fall apart, and what would it mean to trust God instead, or first?
• Have you actually run to the mercy Christ offers, or are you assuming judgment days are for other people, not you?
• If God laughs at the arrogance of powers that seem unshakeable, what does that say about the things you're currently afraid of?
