Jeremiah 27:5

Look at who's talking here: God, through Jeremiah, to a room full of foreign kings — the ambassadors of Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon, who've come to Jerusalem to plot a rebellion against Babylon ( Jeremiah 27:3). Jeremiah's stage direction is to put an actual wooden yoke on his own neck and tell them all: submit to Nebuchadnezzar. Don't fight it. This verse is God's reason why they have no grounds to resist. He didn't say "Babylon is stronger, so give up." He said something far bigger: I made the earth. I made you. I made the beasts. And I hand it to whoever I want.

Notice the order of the claim: first creation ("I made the earth and the men and beasts"), then sovereignty ("I give it to whom I please"). The right to dispose of the world flows directly out of the right to have made it John Gill. That's the logic the ancient world understood instinctively — the maker owns the thing made — and it's a logic we still feel, even if we don't often apply it to nations and empires.

The shocking part, easy to miss: God is about to say (in verse 6) that the "whom I please" is Nebuchadnezzar — a pagan, brutal, idol-worshiping king who is about to destroy God's own temple. God isn't picking sides between "good guys" and "bad guys" here. He's asserting that even the empire that will burn Jerusalem to the ground is in his hand, not outside it.

Where Christians disagree: some read verses like this mainly as a general statement about God's providence over history in the abstract; others (rightly, I think) insist Jeremiah means this concretely and uncomfortably — God is actively handing Judah over to judgment through a foreign conqueror, not merely allowing it. This verse sits at a hinge in the book: Jeremiah has spent chapters warning Judah of coming disaster; now he applies that same warning to the whole region, refusing to let anyone — Jew or Gentile — imagine Babylon's rise is outside God's rule Matthew Henry.

Jeremiah delivered this message around 594 BC, early in the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah — Judah's last king, a puppet installed by Babylon after Nebuchadnezzar had already deported the previous king, Jehoiachin, along with thousands of skilled workers and nobles, in 597 BC. Zedekiah was restless under Babylonian control, and envoys from the surrounding small kingdoms — Edom, Moab, Ammon, Tyre, and Sidon — had traveled to Jerusalem to form a coalition. The plan, presumably, was to revolt together against Nebuchadnezzar, betting that a united front of small nations could throw off Babylonian rule.

This was a real, live political crisis, not a theoretical one. Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar was the superpower of the day, having crushed Egypt at the battle of Carchemish a decade earlier (605 BC) and swallowed up the old Assyrian territories. Rebellion against Babylon wasn't just risky diplomacy — it was, in plain terms, a death wish, and Jeremiah knew it. So God has him do something theatrical: make a yoke — the wooden crossbar put on an ox's neck to force it to plow — and wear it publicly, then send word (and probably replica yokes) to each of these foreign kings through their ambassadors. The message: put your neck under Babylon's yoke voluntarily, because God has already decided you will wear it one way or another.

There were false prophets at this exact moment (named later in the chapter — Hananiah, in Jeremiah 28) telling the people the opposite: that Babylon's power would break soon, that the exiled temple vessels would come home shortly. Jeremiah was the lone, unpopular voice insisting that the wise, godly move was surrender, not resistance — because the true issue wasn't Babylonian might but the will of the God who made the world and was actively using Babylon as an instrument of judgment Matthew Henry.

The verse leans on two paired Hebrew words that show up constantly together in the Old Testament as a kind of stock phrase for God's power in the exodus and in creation: כֹּחַ (kôach, H3581) meaning raw strength, vigor, force — and זְרוֹעַ (zᵉrôwaʻ, H2220), literally "arm," but specifically the arm stretched out, the image of a soldier or a worker straining every muscle to accomplish something Strong's. Put together, "great power and outstretched arm" is practically a fixed formula elsewhere used to describe God rescuing Israel from Egypt ( Deuteronomy 4:34, for instance). Here Jeremiah reaches back for exodus language and applies it not to Israel's rescue but to creation itself — and then, chillingly, to Babylon's conquest. The same arm that freed slaves is the same arm now handing nations to a pagan king.

The verb for "made" is עָשָׂה (ʻâsâh, H6213) — the broadest, plainest Hebrew word for "make" or "do," used of everything from crafting furniture to God shaping the cosmos Strong's. It's not a technical or poetic word; it's the ordinary word, which is part of the point — creation is simply something God did, as naturally as a carpenter builds a table.

Then there's נָתַן (nâthan, H5414), "to give" — a verb with enormous range in Hebrew, covering everything from handing someone a cup of water to appointing a king over a kingdom Strong's. God doesn't say he allows Babylon to take the earth; he says he gives it — an active, deliberate transfer, not a passive shrug. That single verb carries the whole weight of the political crisis: nations rise and fall because God hands out territory like a landlord handing out keys, "to whom I please" — no committee, no vote, no merit required.

This verse is one of the clearest Old Testament statements that all authority over the earth belongs to God alone and gets distributed by his choice — which is exactly the claim the New Testament makes about Jesus with even more force. Colossians 1:16 says all things, including "thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities," were created through him and for him. Jeremiah says God gives the earth to whomever he pleases; Paul says the one doing the giving and the one the kingdoms were made for is the same person who died on a Roman cross under a governor named Pilate — himself appointed, however he understood it, by another empire God was quietly ruling over.

There's also a sharper, more personal echo. Nebuchadnezzar wore no crown of thorns, but he was handed authority over Judah he never earned or deserved, purely by God's sovereign choice — the same logic Jesus states point-blank in John 19:11, telling Pilate he'd have no authority at all unless it had been given him "from above." The pattern repeats: God hands real power to men who don't deserve it, sometimes brutal men, and somehow works his purposes through them anyway. At the cross, that pattern reaches its peak — the worst human authorities (Rome, the temple leaders) conspire against the truest king, and God uses their power-grab to accomplish the very salvation they were trying to crush.

And notice the trajectory: the God who "gives it to whom I pleases" eventually gives the kingdom not to a conqueror but to a crucified and risen Jew from Nazareth — "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me," Jesus says in Matthew 28:18, using almost identical language of giving and authority. Jeremiah's readers had to submit to a yoke of judgment; Jesus offers a very different yoke in Matthew 11:29-30 — "easy," he calls it — because the same sovereign hand that once handed the world to Babylon has now handed it to his own Son for the world's rescue, not its ruin.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: do you actually believe God is running things right now, in the specific mess you're in — the job you didn't get, the government you didn't vote for, the diagnosis you didn't ask for — or do you only believe it in the parts of your life that feel manageable?

Jeremiah's audience wanted a God who'd back their rebellion, who'd bless their own plans for security and self-determination. What they got instead was a God who said, essentially, "I already decided how this goes, and it's not what you want to hear — so stop fighting me and trust me inside the hard thing." That's a bitter pill. It was bitter for them and it can be bitter for you. Submission to God's providence — even when it looks like loss, like a yoke, like handing your neck over to something you didn't choose — is sometimes the very shape faithfulness takes Matthew Henry.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: stop assuming that "God is in control" is a comfortable slogan you say when things go your way, and start letting it mean God is in control even of the Babylon in your life — the circumstance, the person, the loss you can't undo. That doesn't mean lying down and calling evil good. It means trusting that the same hands that stretched out the heavens haven't let go of the wheel just because the road got dark. And it means remembering that the God who once handed the world to a conqueror later handed the world to his own crucified Son — so whatever hand you're under right now, it isn't the last word.

• Lord, I confess I want control more than I want you — help me actually believe you made the earth and hold it, not just say it.
• Show me where I'm resisting something you've already ordained, and give me the strength to submit instead of fight.
• When I face a "Babylon" I didn't choose — a hard circumstance, a painful loss — remind me your outstretched arm hasn't shortened.
• Forgive me for the times I've trusted my own plans for security over your sovereign will.
• Thank you that the authority you once gave to conquerors, you now hold in the hands of your risen Son — let that be my real hope today.
