Jeremiah 25:3

Look at what Jeremiah is doing here: he's doing math on his own life. Twenty-three years — from the thirteenth year of King Josiah until "this very day" — and he's naming that number out loud so nobody can pretend they didn't hear him coming. The math checks out historically: Jeremiah started prophesying in Josiah's 13th year, prophesied through the rest of Josiah's reign, through Jehoahaz's brief three-month reign, and into the fourth year of Jehoiakim — add it up and you get twenty-three years Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. This isn't poetry. It's a courtroom exhibit: "Here's how long. Here's how many times. And here's your response — nothing."

The phrase "again and again" is doing heavy lifting. In Hebrew it's built on the picture of someone getting up early and loading the donkey to go do a job before anyone else is even awake Strong's — that's the sense underneath "spoken to you again and again." God isn't a distant deity dropping one oracle and walking away. He's been up before dawn, day after day, year after year, sending word. And the people's response is a flat, unmoved silence: "you have not listened."

What's easy to miss is that this verse isn't really about Jeremiah's résumé — it's the opening argument of a much bigger speech. Jeremiah 25 sits at a hinge point in the book: it's the fourth year of Jehoiakim, the exact year Nebuchadnezzar becomes the dominant power in the world, and Jeremiah looks back over two decades of warnings before announcing that the axe is finally about to fall — seventy years of exile in Babylon ( Jeremiah 25:11) Matthew Henry. This verse is the "before" picture right before God shows Judah the "after."

Commentators don't disagree much on the facts here — the chronology is fairly settled — but there's a quieter theological question worth naming: is God's patience here a mercy or is the sheer length of it actually building the case against Judah, making their judgment more just? Both are true at once, and the verse holds them together without flinching.

Jeremiah began prophesying around 627 BC, in the thirteenth year of King Josiah Tyndale — a young king who, in his teens and twenties, tore down the pagan altars and idols his grandfather Manasseh had littered across Judah ( 2 Chronicles 34:3, 34:8). Josiah's reforms were real, but they were mostly surface-level for the nation as a whole; underneath the swept floors, the people's hearts hadn't turned.

Fast-forward twenty-three years to when Jeremiah speaks this verse: it's 605 BC, the fourth year of King Jehoiakim, and the world has flipped upside down. Josiah is dead — killed in battle against Pharaoh Necho at Megiddo. His son Jehoahaz reigned three months before Egypt deposed him and installed his brother Jehoiakim as a puppet king. And in that very year, 605 BC, the Babylonian crown prince Nebuchadnezzar crushed the Egyptian army at the Battle of Carchemish, instantly becoming the superpower controlling the entire region, including tiny Judah. Everyone in Jerusalem's markets and palace halls would have known: the empire that's about to swallow us has just been born.

Jeremiah isn't a stranger showing up with bad news for the first time. He's a familiar, probably exhausted and mocked figure — a prophet who has been saying the same thing since before some of his listeners were born, and who other prophets before and alongside him had also been saying (this is the point behind Jeremiah 7:13 and 11:7, where the exact same "again and again... not listened" language shows up). The city had grown numb to warning. Prophets were background noise, like a smoke alarm nobody bothers to fix because it's gone off so many times for nothing. Except this time it wasn't nothing.

The number itself matters: שָׁלוֹשׁ עָשָׂר and עֶשְׂרִים — pieces of "thirteenth" (H7969/H6240) and "twenty" (H6242) — aren't decorative. Hebrew narrators rarely bother with exact tallies unless they want you counting along with them; Jeremiah wants the years to pile up in your mind like debt.

The phrase behind "again and again" is built on שָׁכַם (shakam, H7925) — literally to load a burden onto your shoulder to get an early start on a journey Strong's. It's the same root used of Abraham "rising early" to obey God in Genesis 22:3. Picture someone getting up before dawn, packing the donkey, heading out to do hard work while it's still dark and cold — that's the image under God's persistence here. He wasn't lazy about warning Judah; He was up before them.

דָּבָר (dabar, H1697) — "word" — paired with its verb דָבַר (dabar, H1696), "to speak," is the engine of the whole verse Strong's. In Hebrew thinking, a dabar from God isn't just information, it's an event — a thing that has weight and consequence once it's released, like a stone thrown that will land somewhere. When Jeremiah says "the word of the LORD has come to me," he means something has been set in motion that cannot simply be shrugged off.

And יְהֹוָה (Yehovah, H3068) — the covenant name, the "I AM," the self-existent one Strong's — is the name used here, not a generic word for deity. This isn't a philosopher's god of first causes speaking abstractly; this is the specific God who bound Himself to this specific people at Sinai, now calling in the terms of that relationship.

This verse is a snapshot of a pattern that runs the whole length of the Bible and comes to a head in Jesus: God sending messenger after messenger to a people who won't listen. Jesus himself names this exact pattern when he weeps over Jerusalem: "how often I have longed to gather your children together... but you were not willing" ( Matthew 23:37) — same ache, same rhythm of persistent love met with refusal that you hear in Jeremiah's twenty-three years.

But look closer at what's happening structurally. Jeremiah is a prophet standing outside the people, delivering a word he received but didn't originate — and even he gets ignored, mocked, eventually thrown in a cistern for his trouble. The pattern of "sent again and again, not received" reaches its final and most devastating form when God stops sending messengers and comes himself. That's the parable Jesus tells about the vineyard owner who sends servant after servant, and finally sends his own son, thinking "they will respect my son" — and they kill him instead ( Mark 12:1-9). Jeremiah 25:3 is one frame in that long film reel of rejected messengers; the cross is the final frame, where the sending doesn't stop at a prophet with words, but arrives as God himself, in flesh, still speaking, still met with the same "we will not have this man reign over us."

The good news buried in this grim history is that the story doesn't end with Judah's deafness or with the cross's rejection. The one who was rejected and killed is also the one who rose, and who now sends his Spirit to do what twenty-three years of prophetic warning alone could never do: give people new ears. What Jeremiah couldn't produce by speaking — a heart that actually listens — Jesus produces by dying, rising, and moving in. That's the promise waiting further down in this very book, in Jeremiah 31:33, of a new covenant written not on stone but on the heart.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts in front of you: how long has God been speaking to you, specifically, and what have you done with it? Maybe it's not twenty-three years. Maybe it's since a conversation with a friend last spring, or a nudge every time you open your Bible and skip past a verse that convicts you, or a sermon that named the exact thing you're avoiding and you filed it under "noted" and moved on. God rarely shouts once and vanishes. He tends to be patient the way Jeremiah describes — up early, persistent, unglamorous, saying the same true thing in a hundred different ways because He actually wants you to turn, not just to feel guilty for a minute.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty about your own deafness. It's easy to read this and think about someone else — the culture, the church down the street, "people today." But Jeremiah isn't writing a cultural commentary; he's naming a specific group of specific people who heard specific words and did nothing. If you've been nodding along in church or in your quiet time for years without anything actually changing — the same sin, the same avoidance, the same excuse — this verse is not background noise. It's aimed at you.

And here's the mercy hidden in the warning: the fact that God kept sending word for twenty-three years, instead of giving up after year one, tells you something true about who He is. He does not enjoy silence toward you. He is not looking for an excuse to walk away. But patience is not the same as permission, and a warning ignored long enough eventually becomes a judgment fulfilled. Don't mistake the years of quiet as proof that nothing is coming. Listen now, while "now" is still an option.
