Jeremiah 24:6

Picture two crates of figs sitting in front of the Temple. One crate is full of fruit so good you could eat it right off the tree. The other is rotten — the kind you'd throw out because even the pigs won't touch it ( Jeremiah 24:1-3). God tells Jeremiah: the good figs are the people already hauled off to Babylon in 597 BC, and the bad figs are the ones still left in Jerusalem congratulating themselves on surviving. That's the shock of this chapter — the ones who got exiled are the good ones, and the ones who stayed comfortable in the city are the ones headed for disaster Matthew Henry.

Verse 6 is God's promise about the good figs — the exiles. Four verbs, in two matched pairs, carry the whole weight: "build up" versus "tear down," "plant" versus "uproot." Every one of those words has already appeared back in Jeremiah 1:10, where God commissioned Jeremiah "to uproot and tear down... to build and plant." For twenty-three chapters, Jeremiah has mostly done the tearing down. Here, for a small remnant, God flips the verbs. He's not just easing up on judgment — he's reversing his own stated agenda, on their behalf.

Notice the opening line too: "I will keep my eyes on them for good." Not just watching — watching with intent to bless. That's a deliberate contrast with all the times earlier in Jeremiah where God's eyes are set against Judah for evil (see Jeremiah 21:10 for exactly that phrase used the opposite way).

Where this sits in the bigger story: Jerusalem hasn't even fallen yet — that's still eleven years off (586 BC). Jeremiah is telling people, in advance, that the group everyone assumes God has abandoned is actually the group God is preserving, and the group that feels safe is the one about to be destroyed. Christians have long debated how literally this restoration promise plays out — whether it's fulfilled fully in the return from Babylon under Ezra and Nehemiah, or whether (as some read it) it points further ahead to something only completed in Christ and beyond Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

Jeremiah preached in Jerusalem from around 627 BC until sometime after the city fell in 586 BC. This particular chapter is dated right after 597 BC — the year the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar first captured Jerusalem, but didn't destroy it. Instead, he stripped the Temple of its treasures, deposed the young king Jeconiah (also called Jehoiachin), and deported him along with the political and religious elite — the skilled craftsmen, the officials, the priests — to Babylon. He installed a puppet king, Zedekiah, on the throne of a hollowed-out Jerusalem.

Here's what made this so confusing to everyone living through it: the people left behind in Jerusalem assumed they were the lucky ones. They still had the city, the Temple, the throne of David, the land. The ones dragged off to Babylon looked like the losers — cut off from the Temple, exiled to a pagan empire, their future apparently over. Jeremiah 29 shows false prophets in Babylon telling the exiles their captivity would be short — and Jeremiah 24:8-10 shows the people remaining in Jerusalem sure that God was still on their side because they still had the land.

God's vision flips the entire assumption. The Jerusalem crowd, confident in their survival, are the rotten figs, headed for the sword, famine, and disease. The exiles in Babylon — stripped of everything that looked like blessing — are the good figs, the ones God is quietly preserving for a future. Within a decade, this proves devastatingly accurate: Jerusalem is besieged, starved, and burned to the ground in 586 BC, while the earlier exiles in Babylon are the ones who eventually get to go home under Cyrus of Persia decades later (see Jeremiah 29:10).

The phrase "I will keep my eyes on them for good" uses שׂוּם (sûwm, H7760) — "to put" or "set" — paired with עַיִן (ʻayin, H5869), "eye." Literally, "I will set my eye on them," modified by טוֹב (ṭôwb, H2896), "good." Strong's This is a deliberate, fixed gaze — the same picture Psalm 34:15 uses when it says the LORD's eyes are on the righteous. God isn't glancing their way; he's locking his attention on them with the intent to do them good, not harm.

"Return them to this land" uses שׁוּב (shûwb, H7725) — the great "turning back" word that runs through the whole book of Jeremiah, usually as a call for Israel to turn back to God in repentance. Here God turns the verb on himself: he's the one who will do the turning-back, bringing them home to אֶרֶץ (ʼerets, H776), the land.

Then the two verb pairs: בָּנָה (bânâh, H1129), "to build," against הָרַס (hâraç, H2040), "to tear down, smash to pieces" — and נָטַע (nâṭaʻ, H5193), "to plant, drive a stake into the ground," against נָתַשׁ (nâthash, H5428), "to tear away by force." Strong's These are the exact four verbs from Jeremiah's original commissioning in Jeremiah 1:10. Hearing them again here isn't incidental — it's God announcing that the destroying phase of Jeremiah's ministry is, for this remnant, giving way to the building phase.

This verse is a promise of resurrection dressed up as agriculture and architecture. What looks like the end — deportation, loss of homeland, loss of the Temple, loss of the king — God calls the beginning of something good. That pattern, where God takes what looks like total defeat and quietly turns it into the seedbed of restoration, is the same pattern that explodes into full view at the cross and the empty tomb. The exiles in Babylon looked finished. Jesus, nailed up and buried, looked finished. In both cases, God's eye was on them "for good" precisely at the moment it looked like his eye had turned away.

There's also a straight thread here to Jeremiah's most famous promise, just a few chapters later: the new covenant of Jeremiah 31:31-34, where God says he will write his law on hearts rather than stone. The rebuilding and replanting of chapter 24 isn't just geographic — it's the first move toward a whole-hearted return to God ( Jeremiah 24:7 says "they will return to Me with all their heart"), which the New Testament identifies as fulfilled in Jesus, whose blood inaugurates that new covenant ( Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25). The physical return to the land under Cyrus was real, but partial — it didn't fix the human heart. Jesus is the one who actually plants people permanently, uprooting sin at the root rather than just moving bodies across a map.

And when Peter later writes "the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous" ( 1 Peter 3:12), quoting Psalm 34:15, he's applying to ordinary suffering Christians the same truth God spoke over the Babylonian exiles: God's watchful care doesn't depend on your circumstances looking blessed. It depends on whose you are. In Christ, you are the one whose eye he has set on you for good — even, especially, when everything visible says otherwise.

Here's the uncomfortable part: the people God calls "good figs" in this chapter didn't earn that label. They didn't stay more faithful in Jerusalem or fight harder or believe better. They were simply the ones who got dragged off in chains in 597 BC. God's favor here isn't a reward for good behavior — it's a sovereign decision to preserve a remnant through the very disaster that looked like their ruin.

So ask yourself where you've quietly assumed that "still standing" means "still blessed." Maybe you've measured God's favor by whether your circumstances look stable — the job, the marriage, the health, the plans still intact. This verse says that's not how God measures it. Sometimes the people he's building something real in are the ones whose lives just got torn down to the studs. Sometimes the people who feel safest are the ones sitting in a city about to burn.

The cost this verse asks of you is trust without evidence you can currently see. The exiles in Babylon had no proof, in the moment, that God's eye was on them "for good." They had a burned-down sense of loss and a prophet's word — that's it. If you're in a season that looks like uprooting, exile, tearing down — this verse doesn't promise you'll understand why yet. It asks you to believe that God's attention on you right now is fixed, deliberate, and aimed at good, even while the demolition is still happening. That's a hard thing to actually believe at 2am. Say it out loud anyway. Let the word do its work before the feeling catches up.

• Lord, when my circumstances look like ruin, help me trust that your eye is still fixed on me for good, not evil.
• I confess I've measured your favor by comfort and stability instead of by your promises — forgive me and recalibrate my eyes.
• Where you are tearing something down in my life right now, give me the patience to wait for what you intend to build in its place.
• Thank you that being uprooted from what felt safe isn't the same as being abandoned by you.
• Grow in me a whole heart that returns to you, not just outward circumstances that look restored.
