Jeremiah 20:11

Look at the pivot word right at the start: "But." Jeremiah has just spent several verses (you can read them right above this one) pouring out real terror — his friends are watching for him to slip up, everyone he trusted is waiting for him to fall ( Jeremiah 20:10). And then, mid-collapse, he catches himself. "But the LORD is with me."

That's the whole verse in a nutshell: a man talking himself back into faith while he's still shaking. He doesn't say God will remove the persecutors. He says God is with him, standing there "like a fearsome warrior" — the Hebrew paints God as the terrifying one now, not Jeremiah's enemies Strong's. The threat gets relocated. It used to be aimed at Jeremiah; now it's aimed at the people coming after him.

Notice what he does not promise: he doesn't say "they won't attack." He says they'll "stumble and not prevail." The attack still comes. The disgrace still lands — but on them, not him. And it's not a small, forgettable defeat; it's "everlasting disgrace that will never be forgotten" — the kind of shame history doesn't let you live down John Gill.

This sits right in the middle of what scholars call Jeremiah's "confessions" — a string of raw, almost violent prayers where he argues with God about the cost of being faithful. This is the high point of one of them: verse 11 is the turn from despair to trust, right before (uncomfortably) he crashes right back down into cursing the day he was born in verses 14–18 Matthew Henry. Christians don't disagree much on the meaning here, but it's worth naming the tension plainly: this isn't a tidy testimony of a man who "learned to trust God and felt better forever." It's a snapshot of faith mid-fight, and the next paragraph proves how fragile that faith still was.

Jeremiah preached in Jerusalem roughly from 627 to 586 BC, through the final decades of the kingdom of Judah, as the Babylonian empire under Nebuchadnezzar grew from a regional threat into an unstoppable steamroller. His job was to tell his own people, over and over, that God's judgment was coming because of their idolatry and injustice — not exactly a message that wins friends.

Chapter 20 tells you exactly what that cost him. Right before our verse, a man named Pashhur — a priest who also served as chief officer of the Temple, meaning he had real institutional power — heard Jeremiah preach a sermon of doom, had him beaten, and locked him in stocks at one of the Temple gates overnight ( Jeremiah 20:1–2). Picture that: a public figure, flogged and displayed in restraints in the most sacred courtyard in the city, for saying what God told him to say. When he's released, Jeremiah doesn't soften his message — he tells Pashhur a worse judgment is coming, and then he turns to God and unloads everything he's feeling: exhaustion, humiliation, the sense that he's become a joke, whispered about by "everyone I trusted" ( Jeremiah 20:10).

This is also a man already carrying a promise from years earlier. Back when God first called him as a young man, God told him plainly that he'd face exactly this kind of opposition — kings, officials, priests, the whole country lined up against him — but that he would not be overcome ( Jeremiah 1:18–19). Verse 11 is Jeremiah reaching back and cashing in that old promise in real time, in the middle of actual pain, not theoretical pain. That's why this verse feels less like a sermon and more like a man gritting his teeth.

The phrase "fearsome warrior" is doing enormous work here. It's גִּבּוֹר (gibbôwr, H1368) — a "mighty one," used elsewhere for heroes and champions — paired with עָרִיץ (ʻârîyts, H6184), which means "fearful" or "terrifying," the same root used for tyrants who make people's blood run cold Strong's. Put together, Jeremiah isn't picturing a gentle protector. He's picturing the kind of warrior whose reputation alone makes armies hesitate. God isn't just strong — he's the one people are afraid of.

Then watch what happens to the persecutors: they will כָּשַׁל (kâshal, H3782) — "stumble," a word that literally pictures legs giving out, tottering, the ankle buckling underneath you Strong's. It's not a dramatic defeat by lightning bolt; it's the picture of a runner tripping over his own feet mid-chase.

The shame word matters too: כְּלִמָּה (kᵉlimmâh, H3639), disgrace, modified by עוֹלָם (ʻôwlâm, H5769) — a word that stretches toward the vanishing point of time, past or future, basically "as far back or forward as memory reaches." And it "will never be forgotten" — שָׁכַח (shâkach, H7911), the ordinary word for forgetting something out of neglect, negated here. So this isn't shame that fades with the news cycle. It's the kind that gets written down.

Jeremiah's confidence here — "the LORD is with me" — is the exact same promise God hands him at his commissioning: "I am with you to deliver you" ( Jeremiah 1:19). That phrase, "I am with you," runs like a wire through the whole Bible, and it terminates in a name: Immanuel, "God with us" ( Matthew 1:23). Jeremiah could only borrow that presence by promise, moment to moment, clawing it back from despair. Jesus is that presence, permanently, in a body, walking through the worst that human hostility can do.

But look closer, because there's a harder, quieter echo here too. Jeremiah is a man mocked, beaten, put in restraints by the religious establishment of his own city, for telling the truth about God — and he cries out trusting that God will vindicate him and shame his accusers. Jesus walks that same road and further: mocked, beaten, restrained by the religious establishment of his own city, and he does not escape it. He doesn't stumble his persecutors before the cross — he lets them "succeed," lets them nail him up, lets them think they've won. The vindication doesn't come by the enemies falling first; it comes three days later, when the grave that was supposed to be the final humiliation becomes their everlasting shame instead. Jeremiah asks for shame to fall on his enemies now; Jesus absorbs the shame first and lets the resurrection do the answering.

That's why Paul can stand on ground even more solid than Jeremiah's when he writes, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" ( Romans 8:31). Jeremiah reached for that truth in the dark, half-believing it, about to crash into despair again a few verses later. You get to reach for it standing on an empty tomb.

Here's what I love about this verse, and what I want you to sit with: Jeremiah says this while he is still bruised. He's not writing a victory speech after the enemies got what was coming to them. He's still in the stocks, metaphorically. The bruises from Pashhur's men are still fresh. And in the middle of that, he preaches the truth to himself before he feels it.

That's the move you need to learn from him. Faith isn't the absence of the ten verses before this one — the exhaustion, the sense that everyone you trusted is waiting for you to fail, the temptation to just shut up and stop being who God made you to be ( Jeremiah 20:9). Faith is saying "but" in the middle of that. "But the LORD is with me."

Here's the cost, though, and I won't soften it: Jeremiah doesn't get to see the ending yet. He has to keep preaching an unpopular truth without proof that it'll work out, trusting a promise made to him years earlier that he has to keep re-believing every single day he gets mocked. That's the cost this verse asks of you too — not a one-time leap of faith, but the daily, grinding decision to keep telling the truth God's given you, to keep showing up as the person he made you, even while the people around you are waiting to watch you fall. You may not get the satisfaction of watching your critics stumble in your lifetime. You might have to trust, the way Jeremiah did, that the shame lands eventually, and that in the meantime your job is just to stay faithful, not to stay vindicated.

• Lord, when I feel mocked or written off for following you honestly, remind me that you stand with me the way you stood with Jeremiah — help me actually believe it, not just recite it.
• Give me the courage to keep telling the truth you've given me, even when the people closest to me are waiting for me to fail.
• Where I've been humiliated for doing right, I hand that shame to you — I trust you to be the one who settles it, in your timing, not mine.
• Teach me that faith can coexist with fear and exhaustion — don't let me wait to feel strong before I trust you.
• Thank you that in Jesus you didn't just promise to be with me, you became "God with us" permanently — root that truth deeper in me today.

• When was the last time you said "but God" in the middle of despair, the way Jeremiah does here — and did you actually mean it, or was it a habit of speech?
• Where in your life right now are you tempted to soften the truth because you're afraid of how people will treat you for saying it?
• Jeremiah wants his enemies publicly shamed. Be honest: is there someone you're praying that kind of prayer against right now? What would it look like to hand that desire fully to God instead of nursing it?
• This same man crashes into despair again a few verses later ( Jeremiah 20:14-18). Does that unsettle your idea of what "having faith" is supposed to look like, or does it comfort you?
• What would it cost you, this week, to keep being faithful without any guarantee that you'll see the vindication?
