Jeremiah 14:22

This verse is the last line of a prayer — and it's a prayer prayed in the middle of a disaster. Jeremiah's people are living through a brutal drought (you can see the description of cracked ground and gasping animals earlier in the chapter, Jeremiah 14:1-6). The land has stopped producing rain, and Jeremiah, standing in for the people, turns to God and asks the only question that matters: who actually controls this?

Look at how the verse is built. It asks two questions and then answers them. First: "Can the worthless idols of the nations bring rain?" — obviously not, and everyone listening knows it. Second: "Do the skies alone send showers?" — meaning, is rain just a natural process that happens on its own, no God required? Also no. Then the turn: "Is this not by You, O LORD our God?" That's not really a question, it's a confession dressed up as one. And the response that follows — "we put our hope in You" — is the only sane thing left to do once you admit the first two answers were both no.

What's easy to miss is how much ground this verse is quietly covering. It's not just saying "God can make it rain." It's ruling out every other explanation people reach for when they want control without submission — the idols who promise power but deliver nothing, and the impersonal universe that just runs itself, no one home, no one to answer to Tyndale. Both are eliminated. Only the LORD is left standing.

This sits at the very end of a long, raw, back-and-forth prayer ( Jeremiah 14:7-22) where the prophet keeps pleading for mercy even after God has told him not to intercede for this stubborn people ( Jeremiah 14:11). Christians don't disagree much on the theology here — this is about as clear a statement of God's sole rule over creation as you'll find — but it's worth noting how uncomfortable the surrounding chapter is: God has basically said "don't bother praying for them," and Jeremiah keeps praying anyway Matthew Henry.

Jeremiah preached in Jerusalem from around 627 BC until sometime after the city fell in 586 BC. This particular oracle likely comes from a stretch of severe drought that hit toward the end of King Josiah's reign or into the early years of King Jehoiakim, roughly the late 600s BC Matthew Henry. In a farming economy with no irrigation systems, no water storage worth mentioning, and no way to buy grain from three countries over when your crops fail, a drought like this wasn't an inconvenience — it was starvation, town by town. Chapter 14 opens with cracked earth, farmers covering their faces in despair, and wild donkeys panting on the hills because there's nothing to drink.

Here's what makes this moment so loaded: Judah at this time was flooded with competing religious claims. Canaanite worship of Baal — a storm god whose whole job description was "sends rain and fertility" — had been baked into the culture for centuries, on and off, despite prophets like Elijah exposing it generations earlier (see 1 Kings 17-18). People hedged their bets. You worshiped the LORD at the Temple, sure, but you might also keep a household idol or two around, just in case one of the gods was actually in charge of the weather. Jeremiah is writing into a crowd that has spent its whole life assuming rain comes from multiple possible sources — Baal, other local gods, or maybe it's just how the sky works.

So when the drought hits, the real crisis isn't just physical, it's theological: whose fault is this, and who can fix it? Jeremiah's prayer answers by process of elimination. He names "the worthless idols of the nations" directly, using language that echoes Moses' warning generations earlier that Israel's ancestors had provoked God by chasing "that which is not God" ( Deuteronomy 32:21). The drought becomes an object lesson nobody in the ancient world could fake their way around — you can carve a statue, but you cannot carve a rainstorm.

The phrase "worthless idols" translates הֶבֶל (hebel, H1892) — a word that literally means vapor, breath, something that puffs up and vanishes Strong's. It's the same word Ecclesiastes uses over and over for "meaningless, meaningless." Jeremiah isn't just saying idols are morally wrong — he's saying they're nothing, mist you can't hold onto, next to the God who actually made weather.

The word for "nations" is גּוֹי (gôwy, H1471), the ordinary word for foreign peoples — the outsiders, the ones who don't know Yahweh Strong's. It sets up the contrast built into the verse: their gods vs. our God.

For rain, two different words show up — גָּשַׁם (gâsham, H1652), meaning to shower down violently, and רָבִיב (râbîyb, H7241), an accumulation of raindrops, a downpour Strong's. Jeremiah's not asking about a light drizzle. He's asking who commands the kind of storm that actually saves a harvest.

Then there's the name יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068) — the LORD, God's covenant name, the "I AM" who bound himself to this specific people at Sinai Strong's. Pairing it with אֱלֹהִים (ʼĕlôhîym, H430), the ordinary word for "God" or "gods," makes the phrase "LORD our God" do double work — this isn't a generic deity, this is the one who made promises to us.

And the last verb, קָוָה (qâvâh, H6960) — "we put our hope in You" — actually pictures twisting strands together into a rope Strong's. Hope here isn't wishful thinking; it's binding yourself tightly to something that can hold your weight.

This verse doesn't predict Jesus the way a direct prophecy does, but it sets up a question that only he fully answers: who has real power over creation, and can that power be trusted to also be for you, not just over you? Jeremiah's answer is "the LORD our God" — the covenant God who "has done all these things." The New Testament's answer is that this same God has a face now.

Think about the moment the disciples are in a boat, a storm hits, and Jesus stands up and tells the wind and waves to be quiet — and they obey him ( Mark 4:39-41). The disciples' reaction is almost word for word Jeremiah's question: "Who is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?" They're asking exactly what Jeremiah already knew the answer to — only now they're asking it about a man standing in their boat. Paul makes the same connection explicit to a pagan crowd in Lystra, telling them to turn from their "worthless things" — the same kind of language as Jeremiah's hebel — to the living God "who gives you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons" ( Acts 14:15-17).

There's also something in the shape of the prayer itself. Jeremiah keeps interceding for a people God has told him not to intercede for ( Jeremiah 14:11). That's a picture, however partial, of what Jesus does perfectly and permanently — standing between a guilty people and a just God, refusing to stop pleading their case, except he doesn't just pray for mercy, he becomes the mercy, absorbing the judgment himself ( Hebrews 7:25, Romans 8:34).

So the line "we put our hope in You, for You have done all these things" finds its full weight in Jesus — the one who not only controls the rain but "did not spare his own Son" to make sure that hope wouldn't be misplaced ( Romans 8:32).

Here's the question this verse actually forces on you: when things dry up in your own life — money, health, a marriage, a hope you'd been carrying for years — where do your eyes go first? Most of us don't bow down to carved statues, but we've all got our version of "worthless idols." A backup plan we trust more than prayer. A person we quietly expect to fix what only God can fix. A worldview where the universe just runs on its own gears and nobody's actually listening when we cry out.

Jeremiah's prayer is uncomfortable because it doesn't let you split the difference. It asks you to name, out loud, the things you've been leaning on that can't hold your weight — and then it asks you to do something harder than admitting that: to keep hoping in God even when he hasn't sent the rain yet. Notice the order here. The rain hasn't fallen when this verse is prayed. The drought is still going on. This is hope prayed in the dry season, not gratitude prayed after the harvest.

That's the cost this verse asks of you. It's easy to trust God when the rain's already falling. It's a different thing entirely to tie a rope around yourself and God — that's what the Hebrew word for "hope" here actually pictures — while the ground is still cracked under your feet. Can you do that today? Not fake cheerfulness, not denial, but the real thing: naming the drought honestly, admitting your idols can't fix it, and still saying "we put our hope in You"?

That's not passive. That's the most defiant thing a suffering person can say.

• I confess that I often act like the world just runs on its own, like You're not actually holding it together moment by moment.
• In the dry seasons of my life right now, help me hope in You before I see any relief, not just after.
• Thank You that You have done "all these things" — teach me to actually rest in that instead of white-knuckling my way through hard times.
• Give me Jeremiah's kind of stubborn love — willing to keep interceding for people even when it would be easier to give up on them.

• If the rain doesn't come this month, this year — will your hope survive that, or is it actually hope in the outcome and not in God himself?
