Jeremiah 13:20

Picture God turning the head of a distracted leader by the chin: "Lift up your eyes and see those coming from the north." Something is on the horizon, and Judah has been refusing to look. What's coming from the north is an army — Jeremiah has been saying so since the very beginning of his book, that "disaster from the north will be poured out on all who live in the land" ( Jeremiah 1:14) and that "an army is coming from the land of the north" ( Jeremiah 6:22). Everyone knew what "the north" meant: Babylon.

Then comes the gut-punch question: "Where is the flock entrusted to you, the sheep that were your pride?" This is spoken to a shepherd — most likely the king and the ruling class of Jerusalem, who were supposed to guard God's people the way a shepherd guards sheep Tyndale. God hands them an accounting slip and asks: the people I put in your care — where are they? And the terrible unspoken answer is: gone. Scattered. Marched off in chains.

Notice the sting in the word "pride." The very people they boasted about — their beautiful, glittering nation — are being led away, and they can't produce them. What was their glory becomes their shame.

This verse sits inside a chapter all about pride being humbled — the ruined loincloth, the smashed wine jars, the crown falling from the king's head Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. Just three verses earlier God says He will weep in secret "because the LORD's flock has been taken captive" ( Jeremiah 13:17). So there are two shepherds in this chapter: the failed human ones who lost the flock, and the LORD who grieves over it.

Jeremiah preached in Jerusalem in the last, frantic decades before the city fell — roughly 627 to 586 BC. This particular oracle likely lands during the short, doomed reign of King Jehoiachin, a teenager who sat on the throne only three months in 597 BC before Babylon came and hauled him and the cream of Jerusalem's society off into exile — the first great deportation Tyndale.

Here's what "the north" meant to a Jerusalem farmer. Babylon actually sat to the east, out across the desert. But no army marches straight across sand — you follow the water, up along the Euphrates River and down through Syria, so every invader arrived at Judah's doorstep from the north. So "the north" became shorthand for terror: the direction death comes from. Jeremiah leans on it again and again ( Jeremiah 6:22; Jeremiah 10:22).

The "Chaldeans" — Babylon — were the new superpower, and the prophet Habakkuk described them as "that ruthless and impetuous nation which marches through the breadth of the earth to seize dwellings not their own" ( Habakkuk 1:6). Think of a war machine that swallowed nations whole.

Meanwhile Judah's leaders were playing politics, cutting deals with foreign allies who would turn on them. God's charge through Jeremiah is blunt: the shepherds got the sheep slaughtered. Later He'll say it flat out — "the shepherds... you have scattered My flock and driven them away" ( Jeremiah 23:2). The people paid for their leaders' vanity, and their leaders paid for their sin. The whole street-level horror of siege, deportation, and empty homes is packed into one quiet question: where is the flock?

The verse opens with a physical command: נָשָׂא (nâsâʼ, H5375), "to lift," paired with עַיִן (ʻayin, H5869), "eye" Strong's. Lift your eyes. It's the language of someone forcing your gaze up off the floor to the thing you've been avoiding. Then רָאָה (râʼâh, H7200), "to see" — not glance, but really look at what's coming Strong's.

What's coming comes from צָפוֹן (tsâphôwn, H6828). The word literally carries the flavor of "hidden, dark... gloomy and unknown" Strong's. So "the north" isn't just a compass point — it's baked into the language as the direction of shadow and dread. The enemy comes out of the dark.

Then the flock. Two words: עֵדֶר (ʻêder, H5739), a "muster" or arrangement of animals — a whole ordered herd — and צֹאן (tsôʼn, H6629), the collective word for a flock, which the Bible regularly uses "figuratively (of men)" Strong's. God's people are the sheep.

And the flock was נָתַן (nâthan, H5414) to these shepherds — given, entrusted, put into their hands Strong's. The most cutting word is the last: תִּפְאָרָה (tiphʼârâh, H8597), "ornament... beauty," your pride and glory Strong's. The people were meant to be a crown, a thing of beauty. Now the beautiful thing is being led away in the dark.

This whole chapter turns on a scandal: God gave His people to shepherds, and the shepherds lost them. That failure doesn't get fixed in Jeremiah — it gets a promise attached to it. In the very next chapters God vows to remove the false shepherds and, one day, to shepherd the flock Himself: "I will attend to you for the evil of your deeds" ( Jeremiah 23:2), and then, "I will raise up for David a righteous Branch" ( Jeremiah 23:5).

That Branch is Jesus. When He stands up in John's Gospel and says, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep" ( John 10:11), He is answering Jeremiah 13:20 across six hundred years. Where Judah's kings could not produce the flock entrusted to them — where is the flock? — Jesus can say, "I have not lost one of those You gave Me" ( John 18:9). The bad shepherds lost the sheep to save themselves; the Good Shepherd lost Himself to save the sheep.

And notice the grief. In Jeremiah 13:17 God weeps in secret over His captive flock. That tear becomes a face at Jerusalem's edge — Jesus weeping over the same city, aching that it "did not know the time of your visitation" ( Luke 19:44). The God who mourned lost sheep in Jeremiah walked into town on a donkey and cried.

So when you read this verse, you're not just reading an ancient failure. You're being shown the gap that only Christ fills: the Shepherd who can actually answer for every sheep entrusted to Him, because He bought them with His blood.

God's first command here is embarrassingly simple: look up. Judah's whole tragedy is that they wouldn't. The disaster was on the horizon and they kept their eyes on their politics, their alliances, their glittering self-image — anything but the thing actually bearing down on them.

You do this too. There's something coming from the north in your life right now — a habit rotting under the surface, a relationship you've stopped tending, a slow drift from God you keep explaining away. You know exactly what it is. And God, like a friend taking you gently by the chin, says: lift up your eyes and see it. Stop managing your image and look at the truth.

Then the harder question, and it's for you if anyone has been entrusted to you: where is the flock? Your kids. The people you lead. The friends whose souls you have some say over. God gave them to you. He's going to ask about them. And the terrifying thing about Judah's kings is that they weren't cartoon villains — they were just distracted, proud, self-preoccupied men who let the sheep wander off while they polished their crowns Tyndale.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: honesty about what you've neglected, and the humility to name it before God before the army arrives — while there's still time to repent. Judah got this chapter as a warning, not yet a sentence. So do you. Don't wait for the accounting to look at what you've been avoiding. Look now. Grieve now. Come back now.

• Lord, give me the courage to lift up my eyes and see what I've been refusing to look at — the trouble I keep explaining away.
• I confess the people You entrusted to me that I've neglected while tending my own image. Show me their names.
• Thank You that where every human shepherd fails, Jesus the Good Shepherd has not lost one of those You gave Him.
• Guard my heart from the pride that turns Your gifts into my glory — help me hold the people I love as a trust, not a trophy.
• When trouble comes from the "north" in my life, teach me to run to You and not to my own defenses.

• What is the thing coming "from the north" in my life that I keep refusing to look at directly? Why am I avoiding it?
• Who has God entrusted to my care, and if He asked me today, "Where is the flock?" — what would I honestly have to say?
• Where have I turned people God gave me into a source of my own pride rather than a responsibility before Him?
• Judah's leaders weren't monsters — just distracted and self-absorbed. Where does that description fit me more than I'd like to admit?
• This chapter is still a warning, not yet a verdict. What would I change today if I really believed there was still time to repent?
