Jeremiah 11:20

Look at what's actually happening here: Jeremiah isn't preaching. He's praying — and it's raw. He's just found out, in the verses right before this ( Jeremiah 11:18-19), that the men of his own hometown are plotting to kill him, quietly, like slaughtering a lamb that doesn't know it's walking to the butcher. So he turns to God and says, in effect: You're the one who actually sees. You judge righteously. You test the kidneys and the heart — the Hebrew picture is of God as a metal-tester, holding your innermost self up to the fire to see what it's really made of Strong's. Jeremiah is asking God to do what only God can do: see past the smiling faces of the men of Anathoth to what's actually in them, and then act on what he sees.

The line "let me see Your vengeance upon them" is jarring to modern ears, and it should be. This isn't Jeremiah grabbing a sword. It's the opposite — he's handing the whole matter over: "to You I have committed my cause" — literally, he's putting his legal case, his rîb (H7379), into God's hands rather than his own. He wants to watch justice happen, but he wants God to be the one who does it. Jamieson-Fausset-Brown makes a good point here: this isn't personal spite dressed up in religious language — it lines up with the larger pattern in the Psalms of handing your enemies to God rather than becoming your own avenger Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

This verse sits inside what scholars call one of Jeremiah's "confessions" — raw, personal complaints scattered through the book where the prophet stops preaching to the nation and starts arguing with God about his own suffering. Where Christians disagree: some read these vengeance prayers as morally rough, something the New Testament corrects (as in "love your enemies"); others read them as honest, appropriate cries for justice that Revelation 6:10 shows are still being prayed by martyrs in heaven. Both readings deserve to be held seriously.

Jeremiah ministered in Jerusalem roughly 627–586 BC, through the final decades of the kingdom of Judah, watching it slide toward destruction by the Babylonian empire. He wasn't a stranger in Jerusalem — he was a priest, and his hometown was Anathoth, a small village of priests just a few miles northeast of Jerusalem.

That detail matters enormously for this verse. The people plotting to kill him weren't foreign enemies or corrupt officials in a distant palace — they were his own relatives and neighbors, men he'd grown up with, men from priestly families like his own John Gill. John Gill notes that their plan, as it comes out in the verses just before this one, wasn't even to drag him before a court — they intended to simply murder him quietly and erase his name, because his preaching (that God would judge Judah's idolatry and covenant-breaking) was too dangerous, too unwelcome, maybe even too embarrassing for a priestly town to have produced John Gill. Matthew Henry frames the whole chapter this way: God has just laid out, in painstaking detail, how Judah broke the covenant their ancestors made at Sinai, and Jeremiah's own townsmen respond not with repentance but with a plot to silence the messenger Matthew Henry.

So picture it: a small-town preacher's kid, ordained young, sent by God to tell his own extended family and community that judgment is coming — and their answer is to try to kill him before he can say it again. Jeremiah 11:20 is what comes out of his mouth when he finds out. It's not composed in a study. It's spoken in the aftermath of learning his own people want him dead.

יְהֹוָה צָבָא֙ (Yᵉhôvâh tsâbâʼ) — "LORD of Hosts" (H3068, H6635). This isn't a generic name for God; tsâbâʼ means an army, a mass of organized force. Jeremiah is deliberately invoking God as the commander of every power in heaven and earth — not a bystander, but the one who actually has troops Strong's.

שֹׁפֵט צֶ֗דֶק (shopheṭ tsedeq) — "who judges righteously" (H8199, H6664). Shâphaṭ means to pronounce sentence, to vindicate or punish, to govern. Jeremiah isn't asking God to feel sympathy for him; he's asking God to act as judge, the one whose verdicts are actually just.

בֹּחֵן כְּלָיֹ֣ות וָלֵ֔ב (bochen kilyot va-lev) — "who examines the heart and mind" (H974, H3629, H3820). Bâchan is the word for testing metal — putting it in the fire to see if it's genuine gold or a fake. Kilyah literally means kidneys, which ancient Hebrew thought of as the seat of the innermost emotions, and lev, heart, covers not just feeling but will and thought together Strong's. Together the phrase says: God doesn't just see your actions, he sees the internal machinery — the motives underneath the motives.

נְקָמָתְךָ֙ (niqmatka) — "Your vengeance" (H5360). Note the possessive: it's God's vengeance Jeremiah wants to watch, not his own. He's not asking permission to take revenge himself.

רִיבִ֥י (rivi) — "my cause" (H7379), from a root meaning a legal dispute or lawsuit. Jeremiah is picturing himself filing a case — and handing the file to the only Judge whose verdict can't be bought.

Here's the striking thing: this exact prayer, almost word for word, comes out of Jeremiah's mouth again in Jeremiah 20:12, after more suffering at the hands of his own people. Jeremiah is a man repeatedly hated, plotted against, and nearly killed by the very people he was sent to save — a pattern that reaches its full, terrible shape in Jesus.

Think about what Jeremiah is: a prophet-priest from Judah's own household, rejected by his hometown, whose warnings of judgment are met not with repentance but with a murder plot. Jesus stands in exactly that line and goes further — rejected in his own hometown of Nazareth ( Luke 4:28-29), betrayed by someone at his own table, condemned by his own nation's leaders, executed by the very people he came to rescue. John 1:11 puts it starkly: "He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him."

But here's where the connection turns and deepens rather than just repeats. Jeremiah, wronged, asks God to bring vengeance on his enemies now — to let him see it. Jesus, wronged infinitely more, prays instead: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do" ( Luke 23:34). Same situation — false accusation, murderous intent, innocent target — completely different prayer. That's not because Jeremiah was wrong to want justice; God himself says he "searches minds and hearts" and will repay every man according to his deeds ( Revelation 2:23, which quotes this exact language). Justice is real and coming. But Jesus, standing in the very moment where he could have called down that vengeance, absorbed it instead — so that the "cause" every wronged person hands to God could be settled not just by punishing enemies, but by a cross that makes room for enemies to become sons. Jeremiah's prayer is honest and right. The cross shows you the cost of God actually answering it with mercy instead of only wrath.

You've prayed some version of this verse. Maybe not in these words, but you know the feeling — someone has wronged you, smiled in your face while working against you, and you want them exposed. You want God to see what you see, feel what you feel, and act. There's nothing fake about that impulse, and this verse gives you permission to bring it to God exactly as it is, without dressing it up in nicer language than you actually feel.

But notice what Jeremiah does with the impulse: he doesn't act on it. He hands it over. "To You I have committed my cause" — he takes his hands off the case file. That's the cost this verse asks of you, and it's a real cost, not a small one. It means when you've been wronged, the discipline isn't to pretend you don't want justice — it's to refuse to be your own judge, jury, and executioner. It means trusting that the God who tests hearts and kidneys actually sees more clearly than you do, including things about your own heart you'd rather not look at too closely.

And that cuts both ways, doesn't it? If God really does examine the heart and mind, that's terrifying good news. Terrifying, because it means the version of you that only you know about — the resentments, the private grudges, the ways you've quietly wished harm on people — is fully visible to him right now. Good news, because it means the vindication you're hoping for isn't based on how well you performed for an audience; it's based on the truth. Before you pray this verse against someone else, let it search you first. Then hand your case to the only judge whose verdict you can actually trust.

• Lord, you see what I see and so much more — I bring you the person who has wronged me instead of carrying the case myself.
• Search my own heart and mind the way you search theirs; show me anything hidden there I've refused to look at.
• Give me the strength to hand over my desire for vengeance instead of acting on it in secret ways — through gossip, coldness, or scheming.
• Teach me to trust your timing for justice, even when I want to see it now.
• Shape me toward the prayer of Jesus on the cross — help me move from "let me see your vengeance" toward "Father, forgive them" where that's the harder, truer road.
