Isaiah 9:6

Look at how the verse opens — twice: "unto us." This isn't a distant royal bulletin; it's a gift dropped into the laps of a frightened, half-conquered people. And notice the strange pairing right away: a child is born, a son is given. Born and given aren't the same word by accident. One speaks of arrival in time; the other of someone handed over from somewhere else. Christians across the centuries have heard in that pairing the two natures of Christ — fully human (born of a woman) and fully sent from God (given from heaven).

Then the weight lands: "the government will be upon His shoulders." Not a crown on his head — a load on his back. Rule, for this King, is something he carries.

The four names are the heart of it. In Hebrew, a name tells you what a person is, not just what to shout across a room. Wonderful Counselor — wisdom that startles. Mighty God — and here's the line Christians have fought over. Some tried to soften it to "godlike hero," but the very same Hebrew phrase shows up just one chapter later ( Isaiah 10:21), plainly meaning the LORD himself. This child is God. Everlasting Father — not muddling him with God the Father, but naming his fatherly, never-quitting care for his people (compare Isaiah 22:21). Prince of Peace — a ruler who brings not just a ceasefire but wholeness.

In the larger story of Isaiah, this sits like a sunrise in a war zone. The chapters all around drip with judgment and the boots of marching armies. This verse is the promise that the darkest corner gets the first light.

Isaiah preached in Jerusalem in the late 700s BC — roughly 740–700 BC — during one of the scariest stretches in Judah's history. The superpower of the day was Assyria, a war machine famous for cruelty, and it was swallowing the small kingdoms one by one and dragging the survivors off into exile.

To feel this verse, you have to know where the "great light" first shines. Just before it ( Isaiah 9:1), Isaiah names Zebulun and Naphtali — the territory of Galilee in the north. Those northern regions were the first to get crushed: invading armies came through there before reaching anywhere else, and the Assyrians gloated over the yokes they slapped on the conquered. So this isn't generic hope. It's hope aimed straight at the people who got hit first and hardest. The light dawns on the darkest place.

Religiously, Judah was wobbling between trusting God and cutting political deals with bigger nations to feel safe. Isaiah's whole message hammered one point: stop scheming, trust the LORD.

There's a near-term layer here too. Just two chapters earlier ( Isaiah 7:14), a child named Immanuel — "God with us" — was promised as a sign in Isaiah's own day. Some readers tied these verses to good King Hezekiah, a real and partly faithful king. But here's the catch: even Hezekiah failed, sickened, and died. No human king could carry a name like "Mighty God" or a government that "will have no end" ( Isaiah 9:7). The promise reaches over Hezekiah's head to a greater Son of David still to come.

A few words carry the whole weight here.

יֶלֶד (yeled, H3206) — "child," a plain word for a little one, a kid. Not "prince," not "heir." The eternal King is announced with a nursery word. And נָתַן (nâthan, H5414) — "given." A son is handed over, which is exactly the move the gospel later treasures: God so loved that he gave ( John 3:16), and "did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all" ( Romans 8:32).

מִשְׂרָה (misrâh, H4951) — "government, dominion" — rests on his שְׁכֶם (shekem, H7926), the neck-and-shoulder, the very spot where you load a yoke or a heavy pack. Rule sits on him like cargo on a porter.

Now the names. פֶּלֶא (peleʼ, H6382) — "Wonderful" — doesn't just mean nice or impressive. It means a wonder, a miracle, the kind of thing only God does. Paired with יָעַץ (yâʻats, H3289), "to counsel, advise," you get a Counselor whose advice is miraculous — startling, not the predictable thing any wise man would say.

The thunderclap is אֵל גִּבּוֹר (ʼEl Gibbôr, H410 + H1368) — "Mighty God." El is the word for God himself; gibbôr is a powerful warrior. A divine warrior-child. And עַד (ʻad, H5703) — "everlasting, perpetuity" — joined to אָב (ʼâb, H1), "father." A Father whose care simply never runs out.

This is one of the clearest signposts to Jesus in the whole Old Testament — but look how it points, because it's deeper than just "this came true at Christmas."

Start with that two-sided birth. The old preachers caught it: he is a child born — that's his human nature, the baby of Mary — and a son given — that's his divine nature, the eternal Son sent from the Father's side. The Godhead can't be born of a woman; it was always there. So in one breath this verse tells you Jesus is the infant in the manger and the Son who existed before there was a manger. When the angels announce "a Savior has been born to you... Christ the Lord" ( Luke 2:11), they're cashing the check Isaiah wrote 700 years early.

Now take the names one at a time and watch them land on Jesus. Wonderful Counselor — his wisdom shocked everyone; no wise man expected the cross. Mighty God — "the Son of God has come... He is the true God and eternal life" ( 1 John 5:20). Everlasting Father — to his own he promised, "I will not leave you as orphans" ( John 14:18). Prince of Peace — but his peace cost him everything: "He was pierced for our transgressions... the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him" ( Isaiah 53:5).

And that government on his shoulders? Listen to the risen Jesus: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me" ( Matthew 28:18). The shoulders that carried the cross now carry the world's rule. The baby grew up to hold everything.

Notice where the light shows up first: not the comfortable capital, but Galilee — the beaten-down, overrun, first-to-fall corner. If you've been telling yourself you're too far gone, too dark a region for grace to reach, read that again. The sunrise in this verse aims straight at the worst-hit place. That's where God starts.

But here's the cost. This child comes with government on his shoulders — and that means he doesn't come as your consultant. People love a Wonderful Counselor; we're less keen on a King. You can want Jesus' wisdom while keeping the steering wheel yourself. This verse won't let you. The same shoulders that carry the world's rule mean to carry your decisions, your money, your schedule, your hidden compromises. A Prince of Peace is still a Prince.

So ask honestly: where are you treating Jesus as an advisor you can overrule? You text a friend for wisdom but do what you wanted anyway — do you do that with him? The peace Isaiah promises isn't the cheap kind that leaves you in charge. It's the wholeness that comes only when the government actually rests on his shoulders and off of yours.

And feel the weight of given. He wasn't merely born into history; he was handed over — by a Father who "did not spare His own Son." The peace you enjoy was bought by a Son who didn't enjoy it. That should bend you. Not into guilt, but into worship that finally lets go of the wheel.

This week, name one thing you've been "counseling" Jesus about while quietly keeping control. Hand it over. Put it on his shoulders, where it was always meant to sit.

• Mighty God, I confess I've wanted your counsel without your crown — forgive me for treating you as an advisor I can overrule, and take the government of my life onto your shoulders.
• Wonderful Counselor, give me wisdom that startles me out of my predictable, self-protecting plans, and the courage to follow it even when it leads to a cross.
• Everlasting Father, when I feel orphaned and alone, remind me that your care never expires and you will not leave me.
• Prince of Peace, I thank you that the punishment that brought me peace fell on you — let that settle me deeper than any circumstance.
• Lord, I marvel that you started your light in the darkest corner; shine first on the most defeated place in me today.

• Where in my life am I happy to treat Jesus as Counselor but quietly refusing him as King? Name the specific area.
• Isaiah's light dawns first on the worst-hit region. What "Galilee" in me have I written off as too far gone for grace?
• The Son was given — handed over and not spared. Does the cost of my peace move me to anything, or have I gotten numb to it?
• If the government really rested on his shoulders this week, what decision would I be making differently than I am now?
• Do I actually want the peace this King brings, or only a cheaper peace that leaves me in control? Be honest about which.
