Isaiah 5:20

Look at the shape of this verse first. It's not "woe to those who do evil" — it's woe to those who rename it. Three pairs, three flips: evil called good, darkness called light, bitter called sweet. That word "woe" (you'll hear it four times in this chapter, stacking up like a judge reading charges) isn't just "shame on you" — it's closer to a funeral cry, a groan you'd let out over a corpse Matthew Henry. Isaiah is pronouncing a death sentence over a way of thinking.

Notice what's not here: no mention of ignorance, no "they didn't know better." This is deliberate relabeling. Someone has taken the label off the bottle marked "poison" and put "medicine" on it instead. Where's the easy-to-miss part? The order. It's not just "evil for good" — it's "evil for good, AND good for evil." Both directions. Once you start calling sin sweet, you inevitably start calling righteousness bitter — boring, small-minded, judgmental, cruel. You can't flip one label without flipping the other. That's how a culture (or a heart) ends up genuinely finding holiness distasteful and finding sin delightful, without any sense that something has gone wrong.

This sits in the middle of a string of six "woes" in Isaiah 5 — against greed, drunkenness, mockery of God, moral confusion (this one), self-conceit, and corrupt justice — Isaiah's indictment of Judah just before Assyria comes crashing down on the nation Matthew Henry. Christians don't disagree much on what this verse condemns; where they differ is application — some read it mainly as a warning to society's institutions (courts, media, culture-makers), others read it as a warning aimed squarely at the individual conscience. Both are probably true at once.

Isaiah preached in Jerusalem roughly 740–700 BC, during the reigns of four kings of Judah, but this chapter reads like it lands hardest in the years just before King Uzziah's death ( Isaiah 6:1 tells us that timing) — a period when Judah was doing well economically. That matters: this isn't a poor, desperate nation. It's a comfortable one. Land was being consolidated into fewer hands ( Isaiah 5:8, right before our verse), parties ran late into the night with wine and music while nobody noticed what God was doing ( Isaiah 5:11-12), and the courts had apparently learned to bend for the right price.

That's the world this verse was spoken into: not a society collapsing into chaos, but one gliding smoothly into confusion, wearing its confusion as sophistication. The people weren't running around screaming "evil is good!" They were probably very calm about it — judges quietly calling a bribe "generosity," the wealthy calling exploitation "business sense," religious leaders calling comfortable idolatry "open-mindedness." Isaiah's job was to stand in the temple courts or the city gate and say, out loud, in public: your whole vocabulary is broken.

Within about twenty years of these words, Assyria — the superpower to the north, already having crushed the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BC — would be at Jerusalem's gates. Isaiah is warning a nation that has grown so comfortable rearranging its moral language that it can no longer see the danger closing in on it.

The verse opens with הוֹי (hôwy, H1945) — "oh!" or "alas!" Strong's. It's a funeral wail, the sound you make standing over a grave, not a scold. Isaiah isn't wagging his finger; he's grieving in advance over what's coming.

Then the key verb: שׂוּם (sûwm, H7760), "to put" or "to set" Strong's. It's the same verb you'd use for putting a coin down on a table or setting a stone in a wall. These people aren't confused about evil and good — they are actively placing one where the other should be, like swapping labels on jars. It's a hands-on verb, an act, not a mistake.

The three pairs use ordinary, physical Hebrew words: רַע (raʻ, H7451, bad/evil) against טוֹב (ṭôwb, H2896, good) Strong's; חֹשֶׁךְ (chôshek, H2822, darkness — a word that in Hebrew carries the shadow of death and misery, not just "no light") against אוֹר (ʼôwr, H216, light — used elsewhere for the very light God spoke into being and for happiness itself) Strong's; and מַר (mar, H4751, bitter) against מָתוֹק (mâthôwq, H4966, sweet) Strong's. What's striking is that Isaiah reaches for sensory, bodily words — taste, sight — rather than abstract legal terms. You don't need a law degree to know bitter from sweet. That's exactly the point: this isn't a subtle theological error, it's like insisting poison tastes like honey when your own tongue knows better.

Jesus stepped into a religious culture doing exactly what Isaiah warned about — good people calling his miracles demonic ( Matthew 12:24), calling mercy toward sinners scandalous, calling their own careful rule-keeping righteousness while missing "justice, mercy, and faithfulness" ( Matthew 23:23). He is, in a real sense, the light that finally walked into the room this verse describes — and John tells us plainly what happened: "Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil" ( John 3:19). That's Isaiah 5:20 happening in real time, to a real person, on real streets.

But Jesus doesn't just diagnose the disease — he's the cure for it. He said, "I am the light of the world" ( John 8:12), not offering another opinion in the darkness-versus-light debate, but claiming to be the fixed point by which everything else gets measured. If you want to know what's actually good and actually evil, you don't consult your feelings or your culture's current mood — you look at him. He recalibrates the whole broken instrument.

And there's a costlier layer here too. On the cross, the very people Isaiah describes did their worst labeling: they called the sinless Son of God a blasphemer and a criminal, and called their own murder of him justice ( Acts 3:14-15). The ultimate case of calling evil good and good evil happened at Golgotha. Yet God took that darkest inversion and turned it inside out — the "bitter" of the cross became the source of the sweetest news the world has ever heard. He didn't just judge the confusion Isaiah names; he absorbed its worst instance and rewrote the ending.

Here's the uncomfortable part: this verse was never written about "those people out there." It's written about you and me on the days we get tired of feeling guilty. Nobody wakes up and decides, "Today I will call evil good." It happens slower than that — you rehearse an excuse until it sounds reasonable, you surround yourself with people who agree with you, you find the one verse that seems to bless what you already wanted to do, and eventually the label just... changes. What used to make your conscience flinch stops registering at all.

Ask yourself honestly: is there something in your life right now that you've quietly relabeled? A grudge you call "discernment"? A compromise you call "grace"? A habit you call "how I cope"? A relationship you know is wrong but call "complicated"? This verse doesn't ask you to try harder. It asks you to stop switching the labels back — to call the thing what it actually is, out loud, to God, before you do anything else about it.

That's the cost: honesty before change. Not "I'll fix it and then I'll admit it was wrong" — admit it's wrong first, while it still feels bitter to say. The moment sin stops tasting bitter to you is the moment you should be most afraid, not most comfortable. And the good news sitting right underneath the woe is this: the God who pronounces this judgment is the same God who, in Christ, offers to actually retrain your taste — to make what's truly good taste good to you again, and what's truly evil taste like the poison it is. That's not a threat. That's an invitation to get your senses back.
