Isaiah 57:15

Look at the shape of this sentence. It starts with a God so far above everything that the words pile up trying to describe him — "high and lifted up," the one who "inhabits eternity," whose very name is "Holy." That's the God who lives in unapproachable light, the God the seraphim can't even look at directly in Isaiah 6. And then, in the very same breath, that same God says: and I live with the crushed and the humble. No transition. No "but." Just a comma between infinite majesty and a broken heart.

The two halves aren't in tension for God the way they'd be for us. He doesn't have to choose between being enthroned in glory and sitting beside someone who's falling apart. He does both, at the same time, without diminishing either one Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. That's the scandal and the comfort of the verse.

Notice too what God says he's doing with the lowly, not just where he's located. He's there "to restore the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite" — this isn't a passive nearness, like a landlord who happens to live in the same building. It's active resuscitation. He's breathing life back into people who've been crushed flat.

This verse sits inside a section of Isaiah (57:14-21) where God is answering the despair of his people after judgment — he's clearing the road, removing obstacles, and promising to come back to a people who thought they'd wrecked things beyond repair Matthew Henry. Older commentators, especially those reading Isaiah as pointing toward Israel's future and the Jewish people's eventual return to God, saw this contrition as something still to be fulfilled at the end of history Jamieson-Fausset-Brown — that's one place where readers have disagreed, whether "the lowly" here means Israel specifically, the exiles, or anyone humbled before God across all time. Most Christian readers today take the wider view: anyone, in any age, who comes to God crushed instead of proud.

Isaiah's book covers a huge sweep of time — the prophet himself preached in Jerusalem in the 700s BC, warning of coming judgment from Assyria and Babylon. But chapters 40-66, where this verse sits, speak to people generations later: the Judeans who are either living through the Babylonian exile — when Nebuchadnezzar's army flattened Jerusalem in 586 BC and marched the survivors off to Babylon — or newly returned from it (scholars debate the exact date, somewhere around 540-520 BC, but the emotional situation is the same either way).

Picture the audience: people who've lost their city, their temple, and — worse — their sense that God was still with them. Chapter 57 doesn't spare them. Just before our verse, God has been blistering the nation for spiritual unfaithfulness, for chasing after other gods like a spouse running to lovers Matthew Henry. These are people who have every reason to assume God is finished with them — that the door is shut, that shame is the last word.

Into that wreckage comes verse 15. It's not addressed to people who feel fine about themselves. It's addressed to people crushed by guilt and circumstance, wondering if the God "who is high and lifted up" — a phrase that would have called to mind kings on thrones, gods enthroned in the heavens far above human reach — has any interest left in them at all. The ancient world had plenty of high gods who stayed remote, who required elaborate intermediaries just to get their attention. Isaiah's God does something almost unthinkable in that world: he says his address is both the throne room of eternity and the ash heap where a broken person sits weeping.

The verse opens by stacking up words for God's transcendence. רוּם (rûwm, H7311) means to rise or be lifted high, and נָשָׂא (nâsâʼ, H5375) means to lift or exalt — together, "high and lifted up," almost redundant on purpose, piling emphasis on emphasis Strong's. Then comes שָׁכַן (shâkan, H7931) — "to reside, to permanently dwell" Strong's. This is the same root behind the word Shekinah, the settled, at-home presence of God — not a visit, a residence. And here's the shock: the verse uses that exact word twice, once for God dwelling in the "high and holy place" (מָרוֹם, mârôwm, H4791 — an elevated, lofty place) and once, implicitly, for his dwelling with the crushed. Same verb, same kind of permanent presence, two addresses.

The word for "contrite" is דַּכָּא (dakkâʼ, H1793) — literally "crushed," like something pounded to powder Strong's, from the verb דָּכָא (dâkâʼ, H1792), "to crumble, to bruise." This isn't polite humility — it's the image of a person ground down to dust. And "revive" is חָיָה (châyâh, H2421), "to live," used causatively — to make alive again, to resuscitate Strong's. God isn't managing the crushed person's condition; he's reversing it, breathing life back into what's been pulverized. Finally, קָדוֹשׁ (qâdôwsh, H6918) — "Holy" — isn't just a title but describes God's essential otherness, his complete separation from everything broken and dirty Strong's. That's what makes his choice to dwell with the crushed so startling: holiness usually keeps its distance.

This verse describes something God does — dwell with the humbled — but the New Testament shows you what it looks like when God does this in a body you can touch. Jesus is Isaiah's "high and lifted up" God who steps down and takes up residence with crushed people. Not "visits" — dwells. John's Gospel says "the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us" ( John 1:14), using exactly the kind of language this verse uses: God pitching his tent, moving in.

And look at who Jesus actually spends his time with — tax collectors, the sick, the ashamed, the ones everyone else considers used-up. That's not incidental to who he is; it's Isaiah 57:15 walking around in sandals. He said as much himself: he came for "those who are sick," not the healthy ( Matthew 9:12), and he opened his ministry announcing good news for the poor and the brokenhearted ( Luke 4:18, echoing Isaiah 61:1).

There's also a striking echo worth noticing: the same phrase used here for God — "high and lifted up" — shows up describing the suffering Servant in Isaiah 52:13, who will be "raised and lifted up and highly exalted." The Servant's exaltation, though, comes through crushing — Isaiah 53:5 says he was "crushed for our iniquities," using that same family of words as "contrite" in our verse. So in Jesus, the pattern flips and completes itself: the high God comes down to dwell with the crushed, by becoming crushed himself, and is then lifted up again — not away from us, but taking redeemed, revived people with him. The cross is where "high and lofty" and "crushed and lowly" don't just sit side by side in a sentence anymore — they occupy the same body.

Here's the plain question this verse puts to you: do you actually believe God wants to be near you when you're at your worst, or do you secretly think you need to clean up first?

Most of us live like God's address is only the high and holy place — like he's approachable when we've got our act together, prayed enough, felt sufficiently spiritual. This verse says the opposite. God names his own address twice: the throne room of eternity, and the ash heap of your worst day. He doesn't say he tolerates the crushed. He says he lives there.

But notice the verse doesn't celebrate brokenness for its own sake, and it doesn't let pride off the hook either. It's specific: the humble, the lowly, the contrite. If you're proud — confident you don't really need rescuing — this verse has nothing for you yet, because there's no room in a full cup. The cost this verse asks of you is to stop performing wholeness in front of God. That's harder than it sounds. It means naming the actual crushed places — not the acceptable, presentable version of your struggles, but the real wreckage — and bringing that, specifically, into his presence, trusting he won't recoil.

The good news underneath the challenge: he's not there to observe your crushing and leave you there. He's there to revive — that word means to bring back to life something that had stopped living. If some part of you has gone numb, given up, stopped hoping — that's exactly the address he's given. Don't manage your grief alone tonight. Bring the crushed thing to the God who already lives there.
