Isaiah 55:6

Look at the shape of this sentence: two commands, two time-limits. "Seek the LORD" — but only "while He may be found." "Call on Him" — but only "while He is near." Both halves say the same thing twice, which is how Hebrew poetry underlines something it wants you to feel: this isn't a standing invitation with no expiration date. There's urgency baked into the grammar itself.

The word "seek" here isn't a casual glance — it's the word used for tracking something down, pursuing it like your life depends on finding it Strong's. And "near" isn't just geographical; it means God has drawn close, within arm's reach, the way a friend leans in rather than staying across the room. Put together, the verse says: God is currently near — go get Him now, because nearness like this isn't guaranteed forever.

What's easy to miss is who's being addressed. This comes right after Isaiah 55:1-3, God's lavish offer of water and food and an everlasting covenant to people who have no money — "come, buy wine and milk without cost." So verse 6 isn't scolding strangers to come find a distant God. It's telling people who've already been invited to a feast: don't just admire the invitation, walk through the door.

In the larger story of Isaiah, this sits near the very end of the book's second major section, right before Isaiah 55:7 calls the wicked to abandon their ways and turn back, promising abundant pardon. The prophet is speaking to Israelites either facing or living through the Babylonian exile — the crushing defeat and deportation to Babylon after Jerusalem fell in 586 BC — and is holding out hope that even now, God can be found.

Where Christians disagree: some read "while He may be found" as mainly about a limited window in this life (repent before you die, as old Jewish commentators put it) Adam Clarke; others read it more corporately, about a specific historical moment of opportunity for Israel that could close, as it arguably did with the fall of Jerusalem in AD 70 John Gill. Both readings agree on the main point — don't presume tomorrow.

Isaiah's book spans centuries of material, but chapters 40–55 speak to a specific and devastating moment: the Babylonian exile. In 586 BC, King Nebuchadnezzar's army had smashed Jerusalem, torn down Solomon's temple, and marched a generation of Judeans hundreds of miles east to Babylon. These aren't people reading Isaiah as ancient scripture — they're living in the rubble of everything they trusted: the city, the temple, the throne of David, the sense that God was permanently on their side.

Into that despair, chapters 40–55 keep hammering one note: God hasn't abandoned you, and He's about to act. Cyrus the Persian king is coming (named explicitly in Isaiah 44:28 and 45:1), Babylon will fall, and the exiles will go home. Isaiah 55 sits right at the climax of this section — it's the closing invitation of the whole argument. After promising forgiveness, restoration, and a "sure mercies of David" covenant ( Isaiah 55:3), the prophet turns to the people directly: now that God is moving, now that the door is open, walk through it.

Picture exiles living in a foreign land, worshiping among people who worship other gods, having lost their temple — the one physical place they thought you had to go to find God. This verse tells them something radical for their situation: God can be sought and found right where they are, in Babylon, not just back in Jerusalem. That's part of why the "seek" and "near" language matters so much here — it detaches access to God from a building and ties it to God's own initiative and timing.

This is also poetry meant to be read aloud in community — in the gathering, in worship, passed mouth to mouth among people starving for hope. It's not private devotional literature first; it's a public call, meant to move a whole exiled nation to turn back before the moment passes.

דָּרַשׁ (dârash, H1875) — "seek" — carries the sense of tracking, pursuing, treading a path toward something you're determined to find Strong's. It's not "consider" or "think about." It's the word for a hunter following tracks, or a worshiper deliberately going to inquire of God. Keil and Delitzsch note it implies pressing in for real, experiential acquaintance with God — not just information about Him, but actual contact Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

מָצָא (mâtsâʼ, H4672) — "found" — means to come upon, to attain, to actually get your hands on something Strong's. The pairing of dârash and mâtsâʼ (seek/found) is deliberate: seeking has an object, and that object is currently within reach.

קָרָא (qârâʼ, H7121) — "call" — literally to call out by name, to address someone directly Strong's. This is louder and more personal than "seek." Jamieson-Fausset-Brown points out that "call" pushes further than "seek" — it's not just searching, it's throwing yourself, voice and all, on God's mercy Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

קָרוֹב (qârôwb, H7138) — "near" — near in place, in kinship, or in time Strong's. This word can mean "close like family," which fits: God isn't just geographically near, He's near the way covenant people are supposed to be near to each other.

And behind it all: יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068), the personal covenant name of God, the self-existing One who bound Himself to Israel by promise Strong's. It's not a generic deity being sought here — it's the specific God who already made vows to this specific people. That's what makes the urgency personal rather than abstract.

This verse describes a window of nearness — and the whole New Testament announces that the window opened wider, and more decisively, than Isaiah's first hearers could have imagined. Paul quotes this exact pattern of thought in 2 Corinthians 6:2: "I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation" — deliberately echoing Isaiah's "acceptable time" language from this section of the book.

But the sharpest connection is this: in Jesus, "near" stopped being a metaphor about timing and became a fact about geography and flesh. God didn't just draw close in feeling — He became a man you could touch, eat with, watch die, watch rise. John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and "dwelt among us" — literally pitched a tent among us, the way God's presence used to dwell in the tabernacle. Jesus told the woman at the well in John 4 that the time was coming — and now was — when true worship wouldn't depend on a temple in Jerusalem at all, echoing exactly what Isaiah 55 was already whispering to exiles cut off from their temple.

And Hebrews 2:3 picks up this verse's urgency directly: "how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" The writer is saying — this window Isaiah described, the one where God is "near" and "may be found," reached its fullest opening in Jesus's earthly life, and it will not stay open forever. There's a day coming when the door Isaiah describes closes for good.

So when you read "seek the LORD while He may be found," don't just hear an Old Testament call to prayer. Hear it as the same voice that later says, "Come to me, all who are weary" ( Matthew 11:28) — the same urgency, now with a face and a name and nail-scarred hands. The window Isaiah announced is still open in Christ. That's the whole reason this verse still has teeth today.

Here's the uncomfortable part of this verse: it assumes you might miss Him. Not because God moves away, but because seasons of nearness don't last forever in your experience of them. There have been moments — maybe you can name one right now — when God felt close: a crisis that cracked you open, a sermon that landed, a 2 a.m. conversation where you almost prayed and didn't. Isaiah is telling you: that moment was real, and it was not guaranteed to repeat.

This is not a threat designed to terrify you into panic-praying. It's the honesty of someone who loves you enough to tell you the truth: hearts harden with delay, not usually all at once, but one small "later" at a time. Matthew Henry put it plainly — seek Him, ask Him what He wants from you, be sorry you've drifted, be eager to find Him again Matthew Henry. That eagerness is the cost this verse asks of you. Not intensity for its own sake, but the willingness to stop postponing.

So ask yourself honestly: is there a "later" you've been telling God? A conversation you've been putting off, a sin you've been meaning to bring into the light, a return you keep intending to make but never actually make? This verse doesn't want your intentions. It wants you to seek now, call now, while He's near — which, if you're reading this at all, He is.

Don't let the word "seek" feel like effort you have to generate alone. He's already near. You're not chasing someone who's hiding. You're walking toward someone who's already leaning toward you.

• Lord, forgive me for the times I've told You "later" when You were already near — show me what I've been putting off.
• Give me the same urgency in seeking You that I feel about things I'm actually afraid to lose.
• Teach me the difference between merely thinking about You and actually pursuing You the way this verse describes.
• Thank You that in Jesus, nearness isn't a metaphor — You came close enough to touch. Help me live like that's true.
• Where my heart has grown cold or distracted, soften it now, before the delay hardens into something worse.

• What's the "later" you've been telling God — the thing you keep meaning to bring to Him but haven't?
• Can you name a specific season when God felt near to you? What did you do with that nearness — and what happened after?
• Does the idea that this window might close scare you, comfort you, or leave you numb? Why?
• If someone watched your last month of life, would they conclude you were actively seeking God, or passively assuming He'd wait?
• What would it cost you, specifically, this week, to stop delaying and actually seek Him?
