Isaiah 31:1

Look at what's actually happening in this verse: people are going down to Egypt. That's not just geography — Egypt sits lower in elevation than Jerusalem, but it's also a picture. Every time God's people go to Egypt for rescue, they're going down, backward, away from where God brought them out of Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. This is Isaiah's fifth "woe" in a series of six chapters ( Isaiah 28–33) — a funeral cry, really, the sound you'd make standing over a coffin, not just a moral scolding Tyndale.

Here's the scene: Judah is terrified of the Assyrian war machine bearing down on them, and instead of turning to God, they've sent envoys south to cut a deal with Egypt for chariots and cavalry. Isaiah names exactly what they're trusting: horses, chariots ("because they are many"), horsemen ("because they are very strong"). Notice the repetition — they keep counting. Numbers are their comfort. And then the gut-punch: "They do not look to the Holy One of Israel; they do not seek the LORD." The sin isn't just picking the wrong ally. It's a heart that has stopped looking up at all John Gill.

Easy to miss: this isn't abstract idolatry, some golden calf in a temple. It's foreign policy. It's the very practical, sensible-sounding decision of a small nation surrounded by superpowers. That's what makes it so unsettling — the sin looks like wisdom. Israel's own law had warned against exactly this ( Deuteronomy 17:16), and centuries of history hadn't cured the reflex.

Where this sits in the bigger story: Isaiah 28–33 is God arguing with Judah's king Hezekiah and his advisors during the Assyrian crisis of 705–701 BC, pleading with them to trust him rather than treaties. Commentators don't disagree much on the plain meaning here — the debate is more about application: how far do we press this into modern questions about nations, alliances, and self-defense versus simple personal trust in crisis.

Isaiah preached in Jerusalem across roughly 740–700 BC, under kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. This particular oracle lands in the tense years of 705–701 BC, when the Assyrian Empire — the reigning superpower of the ancient Near East, famous for brutal sieges and mass deportations — was tightening its grip on the small kingdoms of the region Tyndale.

King Hezekiah faced a real, terrifying decision. Assyria's king Sennacherib was marching, crushing rebellious vassal states one by one. Judah's political class looked at the map and did what small nations always do: they looked for a bigger friend. Egypt, to the south, still had a reputation as a military powerhouse, with a fertile, flat land perfectly suited to raising horses and chariots — something hilly, rocky Judah couldn't easily produce on its own Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. So Hezekiah's advisors sent delegations south, cutting a deal for Egyptian cavalry and chariots to help fend off Assyria — you can read the fallout in 2 Kings 18:13-16.

Here's what made this so galling to Isaiah: Egypt was the house of slavery. God had ripped Israel out of Egypt's grip with plagues and a parted sea centuries earlier, and had explicitly commanded through Moses that Israel's kings never go back there for military help ( Deuteronomy 17:16). Going to Egypt wasn't just picking a bad ally — it was historical amnesia, forgetting the very story that made them a people.

And Egypt's promises were empty anyway. A few chapters later Isaiah calls Egypt "a splintered reed" that will pierce the hand of anyone leaning on it ( Isaiah 36:6) — and the Assyrian field commander later taunts Judah with the same accusation to their face ( Isaiah 36:9). Egypt could not deliver. It would fold, and Judah's real safety, when Sennacherib's army surrounded Jerusalem, came only when Hezekiah finally turned in prayer to the Lord ( 2 Kings 19).

The verse opens with הוֹי (hôwy, H1945) — not a polite "warning," but a wail, the sound mourners made at a funeral Strong's. Isaiah isn't scolding from a distance; he's grieving in advance over people who haven't died yet.

Then יָרַד (yarad, H3381), "to go down" Strong's — a word that carries literal descent (Egypt sits in a lower river valley) and moral descent at once. You don't rise by going to Egypt; you sink.

The key verb for their trust is שָׁעַן (sha'an, H8172), meaning to lean your whole weight on something for support Strong's — paired with בָּטַח (batach, H982), "to trust, be confident, feel secure" Strong's. These are body-language words. Picture someone putting their full weight against a wall. That's what Judah is doing to Egypt's chariots (רֶכֶב, rekeb, H7393) and horsemen (פָּרָשׁ, parash, H6571) — leaning hard.

But the devastating word is שָׁעָה (sha'ah, H8159) in "they do not look" — it means to gaze at, to turn your face toward something for help, almost to fix your eyes there in hope Strong's. It's the same root idea behind sha'an (lean) but aimed at the eyes instead of the feet: where are you looking for rescue? Their eyes are locked on Egyptian cavalry; they never even glance toward קָדוֹשׁ (qadosh, H6918) — "holy," the title "Holy One of Israel," God's signature name throughout Isaiah, meaning utterly set apart, other, untouchable in purity and power Strong's. The tragedy isn't just misplaced trust — it's misdirected eyes.

This verse draws a sharp line between two kinds of help: the help you can count, measure, and negotiate for (chariots, horsemen, treaties), and the help that comes only from actually looking to God. Judah wouldn't look up. Centuries later, another crowd faced a life-or-death crisis and had the same choice — and this time, God himself came down, not to be leaned on from a distance, but to be looked at directly.

Jesus stood in Jerusalem's temple and said, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink" ( John 7:37) — offering himself as exactly the kind of help Isaiah's audience refused to seek. And later Paul makes the contrast explicit in the same key: "This is what God says... in the LORD alone I have righteousness and strength" echoing through the whole biblical storyline until it lands on Jesus, who in Gethsemane refused twelve legions of angels ( Matthew 26:53) — real, available, overwhelming military help — because his Father's will, not human muscle, was the ground he stood on.

Isaiah's whole argument is that Egypt is "man, and not God... flesh, and not spirit" ( Isaiah 31:3) — a contrast between what is merely powerful and what is truly holy. That contrast finds its full answer in Jesus, who is both fully human and yet, unlike Egypt's horses, actually is God with us. He's the one ally who cannot be a splintered reed, because he already went down further than Egypt — down into death itself — and came up again. When you're tempted to go looking for your own version of Egyptian cavalry, the gospel says there's Someone worth looking to instead, and he already proved it by rising.

You probably don't have a treaty with Egypt to worry about. But you have your own version: the resume you polish because you're scared of not being enough, the bank account you check compulsively, the relationship you white-knuckle because losing it feels like death, the plan B you quietly build because you're not sure God will actually come through. None of those are evil in themselves. Horses weren't evil either. The sin wasn't having options — it was where their eyes went first, and where their eyes never went at all.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: when the pressure is on, where do your eyes go automatically, before you even think about it? That reflex tells you who you actually trust, no matter what you'd say in church on Sunday.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: it asks you to actually look — to turn your face toward God in the moment of fear, before you've secured the backup plan, before Egypt's answered your call. That's harder than it sounds, because looking to God doesn't come with guaranteed chariots. It might mean waiting. It might mean the help doesn't look like what you'd have negotiated for yourself. Isaiah isn't saying "never make plans." He's saying: don't let your plans become the thing your soul leans its full weight on while God stands there unconsulted, unsought, and un-looked-at. Today, before you build tomorrow's defense, spend one honest minute just looking at him.

• Lord, show me the "Egypt" I run to first — the plan, the person, the backup I trust before I even think to bring it to you.
• Forgive me for the times I've asked for your blessing on a decision I'd already made without you.
• Teach me what it actually means to look to you — not just to believe facts about you, but to turn my face toward you in the moment of fear.
• Give me the courage to wait on you even when Egypt's chariots look faster and safer.
• Holy One of Israel, be enough for me today — not as a backup plan, but as the first place I look.

• Name one "Egypt" in your life right now — something you're leaning your full weight on instead of God.
• Have you ever asked God to bless a plan you'd already fully committed to, rather than actually seeking his direction first?
• What would it cost you, practically, to wait on God instead of securing your own rescue?
• Is there a decision in front of you right now where you already know what "looking to the Holy One of Israel" would require — and you're avoiding it?
