Isaiah 19:25

Look at what God actually does here: he takes three names — Egypt, Assyria, Israel — and hands out blessing to all three in the same breath, using the same words. But notice which words. "My people" is Israel's name, going all the way back to the Exodus. "The work of my hands" is the language of a craftsman pointing at something he made with care. "My inheritance" is the deepest word of all — it's what a father hands his son, the family estate, the thing you don't sell because it's yours by blood. Every one of those titles used to belong exclusively to Israel. Now God gives "my people" to Egypt — the nation that enslaved Israel for four hundred years — and "my inheritance," Israel's own title, stays with Israel, but Assyria — the empire that will later flatten the northern kingdom and haul its people off in chains — gets called "the work of my hands." This is the climax of a chapter ( Isaiah 19) that started with God smashing Egypt with plagues and panic (19:1-17), then shifted to a startling picture: Egyptians swearing loyalty to the Lord, building an altar in Egypt, crying out to God under oppression and being rescued the way Israel was rescued at the Red Sea (19:19-22), and finally a highway connecting Egypt, Assyria, and Israel so they can worship together (19:23). Verse 25 is where all that lands — God declaring, out loud, that his old enemies are now his own family.

Christians have long debated how literally to take this. Some read it as a real future hope for actual Egypt and actual Assyria (modern-day Egypt and Iraq/Syria) at the end of history. Others read it as prophetic shorthand for what happens in the church — Gentiles from every hostile nation being grafted into God's people through Christ, with "Egypt" and "Assyria" standing for "the nations" generally Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. Both readings agree on the shocking core: God's blessing breaks its old borders.

Isaiah preached in Jerusalem roughly 740-700 BC, during the reigns of Judah's kings Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. In his lifetime, the political map of the ancient Near East was dominated by two superpowers squeezing tiny Judah from opposite directions: Egypt to the southwest, and Assyria — based in what's now northern Iraq — to the northeast. Assyria was the aggressor of the age, a brutal military machine that deported conquered peoples and had already crushed the northern kingdom of Israel by 722 BC. Egypt, meanwhile, was the fading old power that Judah's leaders kept being tempted to run to for military help against Assyria — a strategy Isaiah repeatedly condemned as trusting horses and chariots instead of God (see Isaiah 31:1).

So when Isaiah names Egypt and Assyria in this chapter, he's naming Judah's two most feared and most hated neighbors — the enslaver of their ancestors and the destroyer of their northern cousins. Historically, there actually was a period when Assyria under Sargon II invaded and dominated Egypt (around 720-711 BC), forcing a kind of uneasy alignment between the two empires — a detail some scholars think stands behind this prophecy's picture of the two nations linked together Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. But Isaiah pushes past current events into something no treaty could produce: not a truce between empires, but a shared family under one God.

For Isaiah's original hearers, this would have landed like a slap and a promise at once. You do not call Egypt "my people." You do not call Assyria "the work of my hands." Those words belonged to Israel alone, sealed in the covenant at Sinai ( Deuteronomy 32:9). To hear God fling that language over Judah's worst enemies was almost offensive — good news so big it was hard to receive.

The three phrases in this verse are built to be interchangeable, and that's the whole point. עַם (ʻam, H5971) means "people" — but not just any crowd, a people bound together, God's own congregated family, the word used throughout the Old Testament for Israel specifically Strong's. Giving it to Egypt is like handing someone else your family name.

מַעֲשֶׂה (maʻăseh, H4639) means a "work" or "product" — something made, a craftsman's output, from the verb "to do/make" (H6213) Strong's. Paired with יָד (yâd, H3027), "hand," the phrase "work of my hands" pictures God as a potter or sculptor, hands still on the clay. This exact phrase shows up again in Isaiah 29:23 and Isaiah 60:21 describing Israel's own restored people — so when Assyria gets called this, Isaiah is quoting Israel's own resume and giving it to the empire that terrorized them.

נַחֲלָה (nachălâh, H5159) is "inheritance" or "estate" — something passed down, held permanently, not earned but given Strong's. This word roots all the way back to Deuteronomy 32:9, where Israel alone is called the Lord's "allotted inheritance." Isaiah leaves this one word with Israel — Israel doesn't lose its place, it just stops being the only one with a place.

And over all three stands בָרַךְ (bârak, H1288), "to bless" — the same verb used for kneeling in worship and for God's favor poured out on a life Strong's. One blessing, one verb, three names under it. The Lord speaking all this is יְהֹוָה צְבָאוֹת (Yᵉhôvâh tsᵉbâʼôt), the Lord of Hosts — the God who commands armies — which makes it land even harder: the commander of heaven's armies is the one declaring peace over the earth's warring empires.

This verse is one of the clearest Old Testament windows into something Paul spends whole chapters explaining: that God always intended to make "one new man" out of hostile nations, breaking down "the dividing wall of hostility" ( Ephesians 2:14-16). Paul actually quotes the sister-passage to this one, Hosea 2:23 — "I will call them my people who were not my people" — in Romans 9:24-26, applying it directly to Gentiles being brought into God's family through Jesus. Isaiah 19:25 is doing the same work centuries earlier: Egypt and Assyria, the two nations with the least claim on Israel's God, get Israel's own covenant vocabulary poured over them.

That doesn't happen through a treaty or a shared border highway — it happens because Jesus, on the cross, absorbed the hostility that separated Jew from Gentile, insider from outsider, "my people" from everyone else. He is the one place where an Egyptian, an Assyrian, and an Israelite can stand shoulder to shoulder and all three be called, with equal weight, God's own family. Paul will later use this exact "work of his hands" language for what happens to anyone in Christ: "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus" ( Ephesians 2:10) — the same word-picture Isaiah gives Assyria Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

It's worth being honest here rather than forcing a tidy prophecy-fulfillment box: this verse isn't a direct prediction Jesus "fulfills" the way Isaiah 7:14 or Isaiah 53 does. It's better described as a pattern — God's stubborn intention to widen the family — that comes into full daylight in Christ. The road Isaiah imagines connecting Egypt, Assyria, and Israel (19:23) becomes, in the New Testament, a person: Jesus himself is the highway, the meeting place, the one in whom former enemies become brothers.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: who is your Egypt? Who is your Assyria? Everyone has a name that makes their stomach tighten — the group, the nation, the person, the kind of person, that feels like the opposite of "God's people" in your gut. Maybe it's political. Maybe it's personal — someone who hurt you specifically, the way Assyria hurt Israel specifically. This verse doesn't ask you to pretend the history didn't happen. Egypt really did enslave Israel. Assyria really did destroy it. God doesn't erase that. He just refuses to let it be the last word.

And that's the cost this verse names for you: if God can call his people's worst enemies "my people" and "the work of my hands," he's not leaving room for you to keep anyone permanently outside the reach of his mercy — including, uncomfortably, people you'd rather stay enemies with. Grace this wide isn't just relieving; it's offensive, if you're honest. It was offensive to Jonah, who ran the other direction rather than watch God forgive Nineveh — capital of Assyria, the very nation named here.

But turn it around, too. If you've ever felt like the outsider — too far gone, too late, too foreign to God's family — this verse is God going out of his way to say the door was never as narrow as you feared. He's not just tolerating Egypt and Assyria. He's calling them by name, with love in his mouth. That's not sentimental. That's a God willing to rewrite who belongs to him, at cost to himself, so that the blessing reaches further than your fear does.

• Lord, show me who my "Egypt" or "Assyria" is — the person or group I've quietly written off as outside your mercy — and soften my heart toward them.
• Thank you that you called me "my people" and "the work of my hands" when I had no right to either title; keep me from ever thinking I earned my place in your family.
• Where I've felt like an outsider, too far gone or too foreign, remind me that your blessing reached Egypt and Assyria, and it reaches me too.
• Give me the same wide heart you have — help me pray for the reconciliation of enemies, not just the defeat of them.
• Teach me to see the people I fear or resent as your handiwork, still being shaped by your hands, not finished stories.

• If God can call Egypt and Assyria — Israel's enslaver and destroyer — "my people" and "my handiwork," who am I still quietly excluding from that possibility?
• Do I actually believe God's blessing can reach people I consider enemies, or do I secretly want them left out?
• Where in my life have I acted more like Jonah — resentful that mercy reached "them" — than like someone grateful mercy reached me?
• What would it cost me, this week, to treat someone I distrust as "the work of God's hands" rather than as a threat?
