Song of Solomon 5:1

Look at what's happening here: this is the man speaking, and he's answering an invitation. Back in Song of Solomon 4:16, the woman had just prayed for the winds to blow so her garden's fragrance would spread, and she said, "let my beloved come into his garden." Now he answers: "I have come to my garden." Past tense. Done. He didn't hesitate at the door.

Notice the wording — "my garden," but he calls her "my sister, my bride" in the same breath. That's startling if you read it too fast. He's not claiming ownership like you'd claim a plot of land; he's saying the garden he's entered is her — her whole self, given to him in the covenant of marriage. Everything that follows — myrrh, spice, honeycomb, honey, wine, milk — is a string of pictures for the richness of sexual union between a husband and wife who have finally, fully, given themselves to each other Tyndale. The verbs are all completed action: gathered, eaten, drunk. He isn't sampling. He's feasting, and he's satisfied.

Then the voice shifts. Someone else — "friends," wedding guests, companions — is told: "eat... drink freely." The Hebrew word behind that last phrase (more on it below) means to drink until you're drenched, saturated, not just wetting your lips. This is the only verse in the whole book where outside voices are invited into the couple's private joy, blessing it rather than intruding on it.

Where this sits in the book: this is the hinge. Song of Solomon 1–4 is courtship and anticipation, building toward marriage; chapter 5:1 is consummation — the marriage is real now, and it's good, without a hint of shame Adam Clarke. Right after this verse, the mood swings hard — she falls asleep, he leaves, she loses him, and spends the rest of chapter 5 searching. Christians have long disagreed about how literally to read this book: some (especially in the Jewish and older Christian tradition) read it almost entirely as allegory of God's love for his people, others read it as unapologetically about married sexual love with theological meaning layered on top, not replacing it. Both readings have deep roots, and honestly, this verse is strong enough to carry both without forcing you to pick only one.

The book is traditionally attributed to Solomon, roughly the 10th century BC, though many scholars think the poetry as we have it was shaped and possibly written later, maybe 8th–3rd century BC, by poets working within a wisdom tradition connected to his name. Either way, it's Hebrew love poetry, meant to be read (probably sung, with alternating voices) at weddings or as part of Israel's wisdom literature alongside Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.

Picture the world this poem imagines: not a modern American wedding, but an ancient Near Eastern one, where marriage was a covenant sealed by families, celebrated with days of feasting, and where gardens — actual walled, irrigated gardens with fruit trees, spices, and pools — were symbols of luxury, fertility, and privacy. A king's garden, especially, was a status symbol; only the wealthy could afford to grow myrrh and balsam, which were imported at great expense from Arabia and Africa. So when the poem uses "garden" language for the bride's body, it's borrowing the most extravagant, precious image available in that culture — this woman is not common ground, she's a royal enclosure.

Honey and milk together also carried a loaded meaning for Israelite ears — "a land flowing with milk and honey" was the standard description of the Promised Land itself ( Exodus 3:8 and elsewhere). So this couple's private joy is described in the same language Israel used for God's covenant blessing on the whole nation — abundance, sweetness, a good land finally entered and enjoyed.

The last line — friends being told to eat and drink freely — reflects real wedding customs: friends and family didn't just watch a wedding, they feasted at it, sometimes for a full week (see Genesis 29:27, Judges 14:12). The poem imagines the couple's joy overflowing into a shared celebration, which is why some later Jewish readers used this book at Passover, connecting the covenant love of husband and wife to God's covenant love for his people.

The word for garden, גַּן (gan, H1588), means an enclosed, fenced space Strong's — not a wild field but something guarded, cultivated, entered only by invitation. That fits perfectly with what's happening: this is a private world opened up, not a public one.

He calls her אָחוֹת ('achôwth, H269), "sister," and כַּלָּה (kallâh, H3618), "bride" — literally "one made perfect" or "complete" Strong's. Calling a wife "sister" sounds odd to our ears, but in this poetry it's a term of closeness and belonging, not incest — she's family in the deepest sense, and yet she's also his kallâh, the one made whole in relationship to him.

Two eating verbs matter: אָכַל ('âkal, H398), "to eat," and שָׁתָה (shâthâh, H8354), "to drink, to imbibe" Strong's. Both are ordinary verbs of enjoying food, used here for something far more intimate — the poem never gets explicit, it lets these everyday words carry the weight.

But the word that really turns up the volume is in the last line: "drink freely" translates a Hebrew intensive form that means to drink until saturated, drunk with abundance — not a sip, a soaking. It's the same root idea behind חָלָב (châlâb, H2461, "milk") and יַיִן (yayin, H3196, "wine") being paired — rich, heady, satisfying things, side by side Strong's. And מֹר (môr, H4753), "myrrh," comes from a root meaning bitter Strong's — even here, in this celebration, there's a whisper that love and sweetness in this world always come laced with something costly.

Be honest with yourself here: on the plain surface, this verse is about a husband and wife enjoying each other in marriage, full stop. That's not a problem to explain away — it's the point, and God put it in Scripture on purpose, because bodies and desire and marriage are his idea, not something to be embarrassed about.

But Scripture doesn't leave marriage sitting there alone. Paul takes the very image this poem uses — husband and wife as one flesh — and says "this mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church" ( Ephesians 5:31-32). So when this verse pictures a bridegroom fully entering his garden, delighting in his bride, calling friends to feast in that joy, it's not a stretch — it's the same pattern Scripture uses everywhere — to hear an echo of Christ coming for his people, finally, fully, at the wedding feast of the Lamb ( Revelation 19:9). Revelation 22:17, listed for you above, even picks up this book's language of the bride and the invitation to "come" and "drink freely."

Older Christian readers, going back centuries, heard the "friends" invited to feast as us — the church, the wedding guests brought into a joy that isn't originally ours, but that we're welcomed to share Jamieson-Fausset-Brown. John the Baptist said almost exactly this about Jesus: "the friend of the bridegroom... is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom's voice" ( John 3:29) — that's the cross-reference you have above, and it's not a coincidence.

Be careful, though, not to flatten the poem into pure allegory and lose its plain meaning — that's the disagreement worth naming honestly. The safest way to hold both: this verse really is about a husband and a wife, and because human marriage was designed by God from the beginning to picture something bigger, we're allowed — even invited — to hear in it a distant, real echo of the joy Christ has in finally, fully having his people as his own.

Here's what this verse won't let you do: sanitize love into something bloodless and safe. God wrote a book of the Bible that talks about longing, bodies, appetite, and satisfaction — and he didn't apologize for it. If you've absorbed the idea, from church or from your own guilt, that desire is basically dangerous and holiness means numbing yourself, this verse pushes back hard. The man in this poem is satisfied — fully, joyfully, without shame — and God calls that good.

But there's a cost hiding in this joy, and it's worth naming: real intimacy, the kind this verse describes, only happens inside covenant — inside a promise kept, a "my sister, my bride," not a stranger. Our culture wants the honey and wine without the vows that make them safe to drink. This verse won't let you have one without the other. If you're single, it asks you to trust that God's design for waiting isn't cruelty, it's protection of something this good. If you're married, it asks you whether you've let guilt, busyness, or old wounds shrink what God meant to be full-bodied joy between you and your spouse — and whether it's time to actually go back into the garden, not just live next to it.

And if you let the Christ-echo land on you at all, ask this: do you actually believe Jesus delights in you the way this bridegroom delights in his bride — not tolerates, not merely forgives, but delights? Most of us live like God barely puts up with us. This verse, and the gospel behind it, says otherwise. That's worth sitting with until it actually changes how you pray today.

• Draw me, like the friends in this poem, into the joy of Christ and his church — not as a spectator, but as someone invited to feast.
