Ecclesiastes 2:26

Look at what Solomon is actually claiming here: God hands out two totally different jobs. To the person "pleasing in his sight" — someone God delights in — he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy. To "the sinner," he gives labor — the endless grind of gathering and stacking up wealth, only to watch it get handed over to someone else entirely. The sinner doesn't even get to keep what he sweated for.

That's the plain surface. Here's what's easy to miss: this isn't a tidy formula where good people get rich and bad people go broke. Solomon has just spent an entire chapter ( Ecclesiastes 2:1-23) telling you he built the pleasure palaces, planted the vineyards, hoarded the silver, and it still tasted like ash in his mouth. The "sinner" piling up wealth in verse 26 could easily be describing his own younger self. So this verse isn't a smug moral scoreboard — it's an observation, almost bewildered, about how uneven and unpredictable God's distribution looks from ground level Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. Some people work themselves into the grave gathering, and someone else — who did nothing to earn it — ends up holding the bag, in a good way.

And then the gut-punch: "This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind." Even this pattern itself — even the fact that God apparently favors some and burdens others — gets filed under futility, the same word (hebel) that's hammered through this whole book (compare Ecclesiastes 1:14). Solomon isn't handing you a neat doctrine of rewards. He's showing you that trying to control your outcome by hoarding is chasing wind, no matter who you are.

Where Christians disagree: some read "the man pleasing in God's sight" as describing someone God has already made righteous by grace — a fruit of new birth, not a cause of it John Gill. Others read it more simply as observed wisdom literature describing how life generally plays out, without loading it with later theology about salvation. Both readings sit inside this book's bigger project: exposing how little "under the sun" living — wealth, work, effort — can secure for you on its own.

Ecclesiastes presents itself as the words of "the Preacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem" — traditionally understood as Solomon, reigning roughly 970–930 BC, though many scholars think the book reached its final form later, perhaps during the Persian period (5th–4th century BC), written in the voice and persona of Solomon to draw on his reputation for wisdom and his staggering wealth. Either way, the book is written for people living ordinary lives — farmers, merchants, officials — who have watched wealth and effort not add up the way they're supposed to.

Picture the world this comes from: an agrarian economy where a man's whole life could be poured into building up land, herds, storehouses of grain — only for war, disease, a careless heir, or sheer bad luck to scatter it within a generation. This wasn't rare. Ancient Israelite and broader Near Eastern life had no insurance, no retirement accounts, no guaranteed inheritance laws that couldn't be undone by conquest or family collapse. A king like Solomon, who by 1 Kings 10 had accumulated wealth almost beyond counting, was uniquely positioned to test the question: does having everything actually satisfy? He built, he collected, he indulged — and Ecclesiastes 2 is his verdict on the experiment.

The Israelite wisdom tradition — the same current running through Proverbs — generally taught that righteousness leads to blessing and wickedness to ruin (see Proverbs 13:22, where "the sinner's wealth is passed to the righteous," almost word-for-word what Solomon says here). Ecclesiastes doesn't reject that tradition outright, but it complicates it. It's written by someone who has lived both sides — the righteous king enjoying God's gifts, and the disillusioned man for whom pleasure and possession curdled into emptiness — and he wants his readers to stop assuming that stacking up more will ever be the answer.

The phrase "pleasing in His sight" is literally ṭôwb lᵉphânâyw — from טוֹב (ṭôwb, H2896), meaning "good," combined with פָּנִים (pânîym, H6440), "face" — so literally someone who is "good before His face." It's relational language: not a moral score, but standing before God's presence in a way that pleases him Strong's.

To that person, God "gives" — נָתַן (nâthan, H5414), the everyday verb for handing something over, used here three times in the verse to set up the contrast between what's given to the two men Strong's. What's given is חָכְמָה (chokmâh, H2451, "wisdom"), דַּעַת (daʻath, H1847, "knowledge"), and שִׂמְחָה (simchâh, H8057) — a word that means "gladness" but carries festival, celebratory overtones; this isn't a grim satisfaction, it's actual gladness.

The "sinner" is חָטָא (châṭâʼ, H2398) — the root idea is "to miss the mark," like an archer's arrow falling short of the target Strong's. What he's assigned is עִנְיָן (ʻinyân, H6045), "business" or "toil," paired with two verbs of hoarding: אָסַף (ʼâçaph, H622, "to gather") and כָּנַς (kânaç, H3664, "to collect, heap up"). The doubling emphasizes obsessive accumulation — gather and gather again.

And the verdict lands on the same word that runs through the whole book: הֶבֶל (hebel, H1892) — vapor, breath, something you can't hold onto — paired with רְעוּת (rᵉʻûwth, H7469), "a grasping after" or "feeding on wind." You can't catch vapor, and you can't catch wind. That's the picture Solomon wants stuck in your head.

This verse doesn't predict Jesus directly, but it names an ache that only he answers. Solomon's whole complaint is that human effort — even at royal scale — cannot manufacture the wisdom, knowledge, and joy that actually satisfy. Those three things are given, not earned by gathering. That's the seam Jesus steps into.

Think about what Paul says about him: "Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God" ( 1 Corinthians 1:30). The wisdom Solomon says only comes as a gift from the hand of God shows up, in the end, as a person. And the joy Solomon couldn't buy with vineyards and gold — Jesus offers it freely, tied to relationship, not accumulation: "Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete" ( John 16:24). That's not a coincidence of vocabulary; it's the same hunger, finally fed.

There's also a quieter echo in the pattern of the verse itself. The sinner labors, gathers, stacks up — and it's handed over to someone else who never earned it. That's not so far from the strange economy of the cross: Christ, the only truly "good in God's sight" one, takes on the toil, the curse, the sweat of futile labor (see how "cursed is the ground... by the sweat of your brow" in Genesis 3:17-19 sits behind all of Ecclesiastes' frustration with work), so that people who never did anything to deserve it inherit what he earned. Proverbs 13:22 already glimpsed this — "the sinner's wealth is passed to the righteous" — but the gospel turns it inside out: the righteous one's inheritance is passed to sinners, by grace.

This is a quiet resonance more than a straight prophecy — Solomon isn't foreseeing Jesus here. But he is describing exactly the kind of transfer, the exact kind of unearned gift, that the gospel will later reveal as the pattern of how God deals with the world.

Be honest with yourself for a second: what are you gathering? Not just money — could be achievements, followers, control, the sense that if you just stack up enough of something, you'll finally feel secure, or worthy, or done. Solomon built an empire trying to answer that itch and came back with one word: futile.

Here's what stings about this verse. It doesn't say the diligent person always gets rich and the lazy person always loses. It says something scarier — that even your hardest labor, your best-laid plans for the future, might end up in someone else's hands, and there's nothing in the ledger of effort that guarantees otherwise. That should loosen your grip a little. Not so you stop working — Ecclesiastes never tells you to quit your job — but so you stop expecting your gathering to deliver what only God can give: wisdom, knowledge, and actual gladness.

The cost this verse asks of you is trust — the specific, uncomfortable kind. It asks you to keep working hard at whatever's in front of you, but to release your white-knuckle grip on outcomes: on the inheritance, the promotion, the retirement number, the legacy you're building brick by brick. You can't out-gather your way into peace. Peace, real joy, is something you receive from a God who is already pleased with you in Christ — not something you extract from the world by working harder than everyone else.

So ask yourself tonight: if everything you're gathering vanished tomorrow, would you still have anything? If the honest answer is no, that's not a reason to despair — it's an invitation to go looking for the gift instead of grinding for it.

• Father, I confess how often I've treated wisdom and joy as things I earn instead of things you give — teach me to receive them from your hand.
• Give me the strength to work hard at what's in front of me today without white-knuckling the outcome.
• Thank you that in Christ I'm counted as "pleasing in your sight" — not because I earned it, but because of him.
• When my plans unravel or someone else benefits from my labor, keep me from bitterness and remind me that you are still good.

• Where in your life have you confused hoarding with security — money, achievements, relationships, control?
