Proverbs 31:30

Look at the shape of this sentence: it's a contrast, sharp as a knife. Two things get named as unreliable — charm and beauty — and then one thing gets named as the real prize. In Hebrew poetry, this kind of parallel structure is how you make a point land: you set up what's fading on one side, what's lasting on the other, and let the gap between them do the work.

"Charm is deceptive" doesn't mean charm is fake or evil in itself — it means charm lies to you about what it's telling you. A winning personality, an attractive presence, can make you think you're looking at someone's actual character when you're really just looking at their surface. Then the pivot: "a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised." This is the last line of an acrostic poem (each verse in Hebrew starts with the next letter of the alphabet, A to Z) describing an extraordinary wife — one who runs a household, trades shrewdly, gives to the poor, speaks wisely. After twenty-one verses cataloguing her strength, skill, and generosity, the poem doesn't end by saying "and she was gorgeous." This caps off the whole book of Proverbs, which opened with "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge" ( Proverbs 1:7) — so the last woman we meet in the book embodies the first principle we were taught. Where Christians sometimes disagree: some read this chapter as primarily about wives and marriage, others read the "excellent wife" as a personification of Wisdom herself, the same figure who speaks in Proverbs 8 — meaning this verse describes not just an ideal spouse but the character every person, male or female, is meant to grow into.

This last chapter of Proverbs is attributed to "King Lemuel," whose mother taught him these words ( Proverbs 31:1). Nobody knows for certain who Lemuel was — he's not mentioned anywhere else in the Bible — which has led some Jewish and Christian interpreters across the centuries to guess he might be another name for Solomon, while others take him as a separate, otherwise-unknown ruler, possibly from a kingdom outside Israel (the name means "belonging to God"). Matthew Henry Either way, this is royal instruction: a mother preparing her son to rule well, and part of that preparation is teaching him what to look for in a wife.

Proverbs as a whole is a collection built up over a long stretch — much of it traditionally tied to Solomon's reign in the 10th century BC, with other material added and compiled later, possibly finalized as late as the 6th or 7th century BC. This isn't a narrative book with a plot; it's wisdom literature, the kind of practical, memorizable teaching that would have been recited in homes and royal courts to train young people — especially young men who would one day run households, farms, or kingdoms.

In that world, marriages were often arranged with heavy weight given to family status, dowry, and yes, a bride's appearance. A poem praising a wife for competence, business sense, generosity to the poor, and reverence for God — rather than for her looks or her family's wealth — was making a countercultural argument in its own day. It's aimed at a young man's real temptation: choosing based on what catches the eye in a culture where, as one wisdom saying in the same book puts it, physical beauty without good judgment is like "a gold ring in a pig's snout" ( Proverbs 11:22).

The word behind "charm" is חֵן (chên, H2580) — it means graciousness, favor, the kind of magnetic quality a person has that draws others in. Strong's It's paired with שֶׁקֶר (sheqer, H8267), meaning a lie, a sham, something that isn't what it claims to be. So the line literally reads something like "grace is a lie" — not that having charm is sinful, but that charm as a guide to character will mislead you every time.

"Beauty" is יֳפִי (yŏphîy, H3308), plain physical attractiveness, and it's paired with הֶבֶל (hebel, H1892) — the exact word that opens Ecclesiastes, translated there as "vanity" or "meaningless," literally meaning vapor, breath, something you can't hold onto. Strong's That's a loaded word choice. The poet isn't just saying beauty fades slowly — he's saying it was never solid to begin with. It's mist.

Then comes the turn: אִשָּׁה (ʼishshâh, H802, "woman") who is יָרֵא (yârêʼ, H3373) — the same root used all through Proverbs for reverent fear — of יְהֹוָה (Yᵉhôvâh, H3068), the personal covenant name of God. The verb for "praised," הָלַל (hâlal, H1984), is the root behind "hallelujah" — it means to shine, to boast about, to celebrate loudly. Strong's Notice: charm and beauty get quiet, dismissive verbs (deceit, vapor). The God-fearing woman gets the loudest verb in the Hebrew vocabulary for praise. The grammar itself is voting for her.

This verse draws a line between what glitters and what endures — and the whole New Testament picks up that exact line and runs it straight to Jesus. Peter, quoting Isaiah, says almost the same thing about all human glory: "All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall" ( 1 Peter 1:24). Everything impressive about a person — status, looks, charisma — is grass. It's here for a season and then it's gone.

But Peter doesn't leave you with the fading grass. He goes on to talk about something that doesn't wither: a faith tested like gold in fire, which results in "praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ" ( 1 Peter 1:7). That's the same move Proverbs 31 makes — external glamour is temporary, but a life anchored in reverence for God gets its praise, and gets it permanently, because it's tied to something that doesn't age.

Here's where it lands on Jesus specifically: Paul tells us that "each will receive his praise from God" ( 1 Corinthians 4:5) — not from the world's applause, not from a mirror, but from the one who sees hidden motives and brings them into the light. Jesus is the one who does that bringing to light. He's the judge who looks past the surface — past the charming, past the beautiful, past the impressive résumé — and sees what's actually there. He said as much about the religious leaders of his day: clean and attractive on the outside, decaying underneath ( Matthew 23:27). The praise this verse promises to the God-fearing woman isn't sentimental — it's the same praise Christ himself will hand out on the last day to everyone who feared God rather than performing for people. He is both the standard of that unfading beauty (a life wholly oriented to the Father) and the one who will finally say the words "well done."

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you, whoever you are: what are you actually building your worth on? Not what would you say if someone asked you — what does your calendar say, what does your bathroom mirror time say, what does your anxious scrolling say?

This verse isn't anti-beauty. It's not telling you to neglect yourself or pretend appearance doesn't matter at all. It's telling you the truth about what beauty can't do. It can't be trusted as evidence of character — not yours, not anyone's you're evaluating. And it can't last. You are, right now, aging out of whatever beauty you currently have. That's not cruelty, that's just math, and this verse says it flatly because it wants you to stop building your identity on something with a countdown clock attached.

The cost this verse asks of you is specific: it asks you to invest — real time, real effort, real years — into something that doesn't photograph well. Reverence for God doesn't trend. Nobody double-taps quiet integrity. The woman in Proverbs 31 wasn't praised because she was noticed; she was praised because, over decades, the fear of the Lord shaped everything she did with her hands, her money, her words. That kind of praise doesn't come fast. It comes slow, and it comes true.

So ask yourself honestly: if your looks vanished tomorrow — sickness, age, an accident — what would be left standing? If the answer scares you, that's not condemnation, that's an invitation. Start building the part of you that outlasts the mirror.
