Proverbs 23:23

Look at the shape of this verse: it's a command wrapped around a warning. "Invest in truth" — the Hebrew word underneath is qanah (H7069), which means to acquire, to get for yourself, often by purchase Strong's. This isn't "admire truth from a distance" or "agree that truth is nice." It's the language of the marketplace — go get it, make it yours, pay whatever it costs. Then comes the twist: "and never sell it." Once you have truth, guard it like your last possession, because makar (H4376), the word for "sell," is the same word used for selling a slave into bondage or surrendering something you'll never get back Strong's. The picture is: truth is worth going into debt for, and it's never worth cashing in.

Then Solomon stacks three more words onto "truth" — wisdom (chokmah, H2451), instruction (musar, H4148, which actually carries the flavor of discipline or correction, not just information), and understanding (binah, H998) Strong's. These aren't four separate items on a shopping list; they're facets of one thing — a life ordered rightly under God, learned partly by teaching and partly by the sting of correction.

This sits inside a long section of Proverbs (chapters 22–24) where a father is coaching a son through the temptations of appetite, greed, and social climbing — the very next verses (22-25) warn against envying sinners and getting drunk with gluttons at a ruler's table Matthew Henry. So "buy truth" isn't abstract philosophy — it's set right next to warnings about what you're tempted to spend your money and attention on instead. Where readers differ: some (like Gill) hear "truth" here as pointing all the way to gospel truth, Christ himself John Gill; others read it more simply as practical, moral wisdom for daily life. Both readings can be true at once — Proverbs' wisdom always has its roots reaching toward something bigger than itself.

Proverbs is attributed mainly to Solomon, Israel's king around 970–930 BC, though the book as we have it was likely compiled and added to over centuries, with some material coming from later editors under King Hezekiah (around 700 BC, see Proverbs 25:1). This particular stretch of chapters — 22:17 through 24:22 — has a distinct flavor. Scholars have long noticed it echoes a genre of ancient wisdom literature that circulated across the ancient Near East (the world of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Canaan), where sages instructed young men, often future officials or courtiers, on how to survive and thrive in royal courts. Egyptian wisdom texts like the "Instruction of Amenemope" share striking parallels with this section.

Picture the setting: a father — possibly a court official, or the king himself — training a son who will one day sit among rulers, negotiate deals, attend banquets with powerful men, and be tempted by money, food, and status. This is why the verses right around 23:23 talk about not overindulging at a ruler's table (v.1-3), not wearing yourself out to get rich (v.4-5), and not moving ancient boundary stones to steal land (v.10). It's practical survival wisdom for someone entering a world of temptation and compromise.

In that world, truth was a commodity that could be bought and sold in the worst sense — false witnesses could be hired, judges bribed, teachers flattered into silence. Solomon is telling his son: in a marketplace where everything has a price and people will sell you lies dressed up as wisdom, there's one thing you buy and never resell. This isn't a call to hoard books; it's a call to build a life on something that outlasts every other transaction you'll make.

The engine of this verse is a financial metaphor, and the Hebrew leans into it hard. קָנָה (qanah, H7069) means to acquire or purchase — the same root used when Abraham "buys" the cave of Machpelah in Genesis 23 Strong's. Solomon isn't asking for casual interest; he's asking for a transaction, a cost paid.

Then אֶמֶת (emeth, H571) — "truth" — comes from a root meaning stability, firmness, something you can lean your whole weight on and it won't give way Strong's. This is the same word-family behind "amen" — truth here isn't just "accurate facts," it's solid ground.

The warning word, מָכַר (makar, H4376), is jarring once you know its range: it's the word for selling a daughter into marriage-slavery, or selling yourself into servitude out of desperation Strong's. Solomon is saying: don't ever get so desperate, so tempted by a better offer, that you trade truth away like a slave trader trades a person.

Then the trio: חׇכְמָה (chokmah, H2451) — wisdom, skill for living Strong's; מוּסָר (musar, H4148) — which really means discipline or correction, the kind that stings before it helps Strong's; and בִּינָה (binah, H998) — understanding, the ability to discern between things Strong's. Notice: musar isn't comfortable. Buying wisdom means buying correction too — submitting to being told you're wrong.

Jesus takes this exact commercial picture and runs with it. In Matthew 13:44, he describes a man who finds treasure buried in a field and, "in his joy," sells everything he owns to buy that field. That word "joy" matters — Solomon's son is told to buy truth as an urgent, sober duty; Jesus shows what it looks like from the inside, once you've actually seen what you're buying. It's not grim sacrifice, it's a man who can't believe his luck.

And here's the deeper turn: in Proverbs, wisdom is a personified figure calling out in the streets ( Proverbs 8), inviting people to come find life. The New Testament writers look at that figure and see someone real standing behind her — Paul says Christ became for us "wisdom from God" ( 1 Corinthians 1:30), and that in him "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" ( Colossians 2:3). If Proverbs 23:23 says "buy wisdom at any price," the gospel says the wisdom you're being told to buy has a face, and he already paid for you to have him.

Then there's the harder edge. Moses, Hebrews 11:26 tells us, "valued disgrace for Christ above the treasures of Egypt" — he did exactly what this proverb commands, refusing to sell the truth of God's promise for Pharaoh's comfort. And Jesus asks the piercing question in Matthew 16:26: what will you trade your soul for? Every time you're tempted to sell out — to trade honesty for approval, conviction for comfort — you're facing the same fork Solomon's son faced at the ruler's table. Revelation 3:18 even circles back to buying language: Christ himself invites the lukewarm church to "buy" gold refined by fire from him. The whole Bible agrees: truth is worth everything, and in Christ, it's finally within reach.

Here's the uncomfortable question this verse puts to you: what have you already sold? Not with a signature, but slowly — a compromise here, a convenient half-truth there, a conviction you quietly let go of because holding onto it was going to cost you a friendship, a job, a comfortable place at somebody's table. Solomon isn't warning a hypothetical villain. He's warning his own son, someone he loves, because he knows how easy it is to trade truth away one small transaction at a time, never in one dramatic moment you'd notice.

"Buy" means it costs something up front — time in the Word when you'd rather scroll, the discomfort of correction (that's musar, remember — discipline, not just information) when your pride would rather stay unchallenged, the willingness to be the person at the table who doesn't laugh at the joke or sign off on the lie. "Never sell" means the temptation doesn't end once you've paid the price. It's ongoing. Someone will always offer you a good return on trading truth for peace, or trading conviction for advancement.

So ask yourself honestly: where right now is truth on the table, and are you buying or are you negotiating a sale? Maybe it's a relationship where you've stopped saying what's true to keep things smooth. Maybe it's a belief about God you've quietly downgraded because the full version was too demanding. This verse doesn't let you stay neutral. It puts a price tag on your integrity and asks whether you're still holding it, or whether you've already made change.

• Lord, show me the places where I've quietly sold truth for comfort, approval, or an easy life — bring them to mind even if it's painful.
• Give me the hunger to actually buy wisdom — to spend time, effort, and humility on knowing you, not just to admire wisdom from a distance.
• Teach me to receive correction (musar) without flinching, even when it stings, because I know it's how you're shaping me.
• When I'm tempted to trade what's true for what's easy, remind me of the treasure Jesus found worth selling everything for.
• Root my life in you, the solid ground, so I'm not blown around by every convenient lie the world is selling.

• Think of the last month: is there a truth you knew but softened, hid, or avoided saying because it would've cost you something? What did it cost you to stay quiet instead?
• What are you currently "spending" your time and attention buying — entertainment, approval, comfort — that could instead be spent buying wisdom and understanding?
• When was the last time you welcomed correction (musar) instead of resenting it? What does your reaction reveal about how much you actually want truth?
• If Jesus is the treasure hidden in the field, what specifically would you have to "sell" — give up, walk away from, stop clinging to — to go after him with the joy of the man in Matthew 13:44?
• Who in your life tells you hard truths, and are you still letting them?
