Proverbs 22:6

Look at the shape of this sentence: it's a two-line proverb, and like most Proverbs, it's not a legal guarantee — it's a general observation about how life tends to work, dressed up as instruction. The first line is the command: "train up a child in the way he should go." The second is the promised outcome: "when he is old he will not depart from it."

Here's what's easy to miss: that phrase "the way he should go" is often heard as "his own way" — like, discover the kid's unique bent and cater to it. The Hebrew is genuinely ambiguous here, and good scholars land in different places Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. It could mean training a child according to his own nature and stage of development — feeding him truth the way a mother feeds a baby, a little at a time, suited to what his mouth can take John Gill. Or it could mean training him in the way he ought to go — God's way, the path of wisdom the whole book of Proverbs has been describing — not the way his own foolish heart would naturally drift toward Matthew Henry. You'll notice these two readings pull in almost opposite directions: one says "shape your teaching to fit the child," the other says "shape the child to fit the truth." Honestly, the wisest reading probably holds both — you teach unchanging truth, but you deliver it in age-appropriate, personal, patient ways.

This verse sits inside a long collection ( Proverbs 10–29) of short, punchy sayings about how a wise life is built — brick by brick, habit by habit. It's not standing alone; it echoes a much older command in Deuteronomy 6:7, where Israelite parents are told to talk about God's ways constantly, at home, on the road, lying down, getting up. Proverbs 22:6 is that same conviction compressed into one line.

Where Christians disagree: some read this as an ironclad promise — raise your kid right and they will never ultimately walk away, full stop. Others read it as wisdom literature's normal way of speaking — a strong tendency, not a guarantee, since Proverbs itself is full of general truths with real exceptions (like a wise son who ignores his own crooked father, or a wicked son from a godly one).

Proverbs is a collection, not a single sitting's work. Much of it is attributed to Solomon, Israel's king around 970–930 BC, who reigned in an era when Israel was wealthy, cosmopolitan, and trading with Egypt and Mesopotamia — a world where "wisdom literature" (practical, proverb-style teaching for successful living) was already a genre shared across cultures. But the book as we have it was likely gathered and edited over centuries, with some sections explicitly credited to "the men of Hezekiah" ( Proverbs 25:1), a king who reigned roughly 715–686 BC and sponsored a kind of national archive project.

Picture the setting these proverbs were actually used in: not a classroom with desks, but a household. Ancient Israelite life was intensely family-centered — multiple generations under one roof, children learning a trade, a faith, and a moral compass from parents and grandparents because there was no separate "school system" doing that job for you. A father teaching his son wasn't optional extracurricular activity; it was survival — how you passed down the knowledge of God, the law, farming, justice, and social skill in one unbroken stream. Proverbs 1–9 is literally framed as a father's extended speech to "my son," which tells you the whole book imagines itself being read aloud in exactly that setting: parent to child, around the fire, at the city gate, on the road.

This particular saying belongs to a stretch of short, independent proverbs (roughly chapters 10–22) that don't build an argument so much as offer a string of separate observations, meant to be memorized and mulled over one at a time — closer to a book of quotable maxims than a sermon with one point. The original hearers weren't thinking about modern child psychology; they were thinking about apprenticeship — the way you'd train a young craftsman, a soldier, or a covenant-keeper, shaping habits early because habits set in the way clay hardens.

The verb translated "train up" is חָנַךְ (chanak, H2596), and it's a striking word choice — its root idea is "to narrow" or to rub something onto the roof of the mouth, and it's actually related to an old Middle Eastern practice of rubbing date syrup on a newborn's palate to get them sucking, to develop the taste for nursing Strong'sKeil-Delitzsch Old Testament. So "train up" isn't neutral classroom language — it's about cultivating an appetite, forming a taste for something from the earliest possible moment. This is also the root behind the word for "dedicate" used when Solomon dedicates the temple ( 1 Kings 8:63) — training a child and consecrating a building share the same Hebrew DNA: setting something apart for its intended use from the start.

נַעַר (na'ar, H5288) is the word for the child — and it's wonderfully elastic, covering everything from an infant to a young man old enough to be a servant or soldier Strong's. The proverb doesn't specify a toddler or a teenager; it just says "the young."

דֶּרֶךְ (derek, H1870) means "road" or "path," but figuratively it means a whole course of life, a settled pattern of walking Strong's. This is the same word used throughout Proverbs for "the way of wisdom" versus "the way of folly" — so when the proverb says "his way," it's tapping into that larger road-imagery running through the whole book.

Finally, סוּר (sur, H5493) — "depart" — literally means to turn aside, to swerve off a road Strong's. The picture underneath the English is: a road has been laid down early, and the promise is that the traveler, even in old age (זָקֵן, zaqen, H2204), won't swerve off it.

This verse isn't a direct prophecy about Jesus, so don't force it into one — but it's touching something that gets fulfilled and deepened in him in two real ways.

First, think about who trained whom. Luke 2:52 tells us Jesus himself "grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man" — the same language used of young Samuel in 1 Samuel 2:26, who was raised in the tabernacle under Eli's care after his mother Hannah dedicated him to the Lord ( 1 Samuel 1:28). Jesus, fully God, still walked through a real childhood of formation — under Joseph and Mary's roof, soaked in Israel's Scriptures, shaped by the rhythms of Nazareth life. The Son who is the very Word did not bypass being trained. That should humble anyone who thinks spiritual growth is instant or that childhood formation is beneath God's notice.

Second, and more pointedly: this proverb assumes that if you get the training right, the outcome holds. But every honest reader of the Bible — and every honest parent — knows that even godly training doesn't guarantee a godly child. Solomon himself, the wisest man who ever lived and quite possibly the very author of this proverb, ended his life with a divided heart and foreign gods in his house ( 1 Kings 11:4). The proverb tells the truth about tendency, but it can't manufacture faith. Only God can turn a heart ( Ezekiel 36:26), and that's exactly what Jesus came to do — not to give people better training, ultimately, but a new heart, a new birth ( John 3:3). Ephesians 6:4 tells fathers to raise children "in the discipline and instruction of the Lord" — and notice, it's the Lord's discipline, not the parent's willpower, that does the deep work. Christian parenting, at its best, is planting and watering; Jesus is the one who makes anything grow ( 1 Corinthians 3:6-7).

If you're a parent, grandparent, teacher, or mentor, this verse is going to sit on your chest a little. It's not permission to relax — "just raise them right and it'll all work out" — and it's not a formula that guarantees you control the outcome. It's a call to patient, deliberate, daily investment in someone else's soul, with no promise you'll live to see the fruit, and no guarantee even if you do everything right.

Here's the cost this verse actually asks: training a child in "the way he should go" takes far more than good intentions on Sunday. It's the boring, repetitive, unglamorous work of showing up — at bedtime, in the car, at the dinner table, in the middle of a tantrum, in the middle of your own bad mood — and choosing, again and again, to point toward what's true and good instead of just what's convenient. It costs you your comfort. It costs you the fantasy that a weekly church program will do the forming for you. And if you don't have kids, it still applies — someone younger than you, in your church, your family, your neighborhood, is watching how you live and drawing conclusions about what following God actually looks like.

And if you're the child in this story — however old you are now — this verse asks you something too: what were you trained toward? Not just what you were taught, but what taste you actually developed. Sometimes people raised in godly homes wander for years before that early training does its slow work, like a compass that keeps pulling you back north no matter how far you drift. If that's your story, don't read this proverb as condemnation. Read it as a promise still working itself out. The God who used a mother's dedication to shape Samuel, and who is patient enough to let his own Son "grow" in wisdom year by year, is patient enough to keep working in you.

• Show me who is watching my life right now, learning what it means to follow you — and help me live like it matters.
