Proverbs 14:23

Look at the two halves of this verse — they're set against each other like two roads leading opposite directions. On the left: "all labor." On the right: "mere talk." One ends in profit, the other in poverty. The proverb isn't complicated on its surface: doing beats talking. Roll up your sleeves and something comes of it; run your mouth instead and you end up with nothing.

But don't miss the sharpness. The word for "labor" here doesn't mean pleasant, easy work. It carries the ache of toil — sweat, strain, the kind of work that costs you Strong's. And "mere talk" is literally "the word of the lips" — talk that stays at the lip level and never travels down into the hands. It's the talk of a person who describes their plans, boasts about their projects, debates and dreams out loud — but never actually starts Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. That kind of talk doesn't just fail to help; it actively drains you. It burns the time and energy you could have spent building something real.

One thing to hold carefully: proverbs are usually-true wisdom, not iron laws. This isn't a promise that every hard worker gets rich — anyone who's watched a faithful laborer stay poor knows better. The Bible itself is honest that poverty has tangled roots, some of them nobody's fault. A proverb tells you the reliable road, the way life normally works, not a mechanical guarantee.

This verse sits in a run of sayings in chapter 14 that all circle around wisdom versus folly in daily life. It's cousin to Proverbs 28:19 — "the one who works his land will have plenty of food, but whoever chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty."

Proverbs grew up in the world of Israel's royal court, most of it linked to Solomon (roughly 970–930 BC) and later gathered and edited over centuries, with a final shape probably taking hold after the return from Babylon (the exile — when Nebuchadnezzar's army destroyed Jerusalem and hauled the survivors off in 586 BC, before Persia let them come home decades later).

Picture the setting behind a line like this. Ancient Israel was overwhelmingly an agricultural, hands-on society. Most people were farmers, herders, potters, and tradesmen. If you didn't plow, plant, and harvest, you didn't eat — there was no supermarket, no safety net, no cushion. The gap between "worked hard this season" and "went hungry this winter" was brutally short. So a saying about labor versus empty talk wasn't abstract career advice; it was closer to survival wisdom passed from a father to a son who needed to keep the family alive.

This kind of teaching was aimed especially at the young — think of a mentor training an apprentice or a father shaping a son for adult responsibility. Proverbs repeatedly warns against two seductive traps for the young man with time on his hands: the sluggard who won't get up, and the smooth talker who's all mouth. In a culture where honor and reputation were built on your word, there was real temptation to trade in impressive talk — to sound like a person of substance without actually producing any. This verse cuts that legs out from under that pose. It says: talk is cheap, and cheap talk actually makes you poorer, not richer. The community around you can't eat your speeches.

Two words carry the weight of this verse, and both start with the Hebrew letter mem — part of a whole cluster of sayings that lean on that sound Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

First, the word for "labor": עֶצֶב (ʻetseb, H6089). It's a striking choice, because it doesn't mean cheerful busyness — it means painful toil, even a pang of the body or mind Strong's. It's rooted in a word for hurt and hardship. The verse isn't romanticizing work; it's saying that even the sweaty, aching, unwelcome kind of labor produces something real.

Against that stands מוֹתָר (môwthâr, H4195) — "profit" or "gain," literally the idea of something left over, an overflow, a surplus that hangs above and beyond what you put in Strong's. Honest toil leaves you with extra in your hands.

Now the other road. "Mere talk" is literally דָּבָר שָׂפָה — a dâbâr (H1697, a word or matter) of the sâphâh (H8193, the lips). It's word that never gets past the lips — all boundary, no body Strong's. And where does it lead? מַחְסוֹר (machçôwr, H4270) — deficiency, lack, impoverishment, from a root meaning "to be lacking" Strong's. Not just failure to gain — actual loss. The empty talker doesn't stay even; he slides backward into want.

There's a straight line from this little proverb to something Jesus said again and again: love and faith prove themselves in doing, not in talking. "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father" ( Matthew 7:21). That's Proverbs 14:23 in kingdom clothes — the lips can say all the right things and still leave you empty-handed before God.

But there's a deeper turn. Jesus takes this whole "labor brings profit" wisdom and gently redirects it toward something the ground can never grow. In John 6:27 he says, "Do not work for food that perishes, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you." Notice — he doesn't cancel the value of work; he lifts your eyes to the labor that actually lasts. All your honest toil still ends in a grave unless it's tethered to him.

And here's the sweetest reversal: the profit that matters most is given, not earned. The verse says gain comes through toil — and it does, in this life. But eternal life is the one surplus you cannot sweat your way into. Jesus does the decisive labor — the cross, the true sweat of blood in Gethsemane — and hands you the profit as a gift.

So don't hear this proverb as pure bootstrap self-help. Hear it as an honest picture of how God made the world and a signpost pointing past it: work hard, yes — but the richest overflow of all comes from resting your whole weight on the One who worked in your place.

Be honest with yourself for a minute. How much of your energy goes into talking about the life you want, and how much into actually building it?

We've never had more tools for talk. You can post about the book you're going to write, tweet your opinions about work you're not doing, narrate your fitness plan, describe your ministry dreams, debate theology online — and feel, at the end of the day, like you've done something. You haven't. That's the trap this verse names with a raised eyebrow. Talk that never reaches your hands doesn't just fail to enrich you; it quietly impoverishes you Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. It burns the hours and the energy you could have spent making something real.

And notice — the good work here is painful work Strong's. The unwelcome task. The email you keep avoiding, the hard conversation, the discipline you know you need. One thing the wise have always known: the dreaded job only becomes pleasant after it's done, never before. Waiting to feel like it is a lie you tell yourself.

So here's the cost this verse asks of you: stop the noise and start the toil. Pick the one thing you've been narrating instead of doing — and today, do the first ugly, unglamorous piece of it. And take it further than money. Matthew Henry saw it plainly: this is just as true for your soul Matthew Henry. A faith that "runs all out in talk and noise" — prayers that are only lip-labor, discipleship you discuss but never practice — leaves you spiritually poor. God is not fooled by eloquence. He looks for the hands.
