Genesis 6:5

Look at what's actually written here: "the LORD saw." Not "heard about." Not "suspected." Saw — the Hebrew is rā'āh (H3068... actually H7200), the ordinary word for looking straight at something Strong's. God isn't a distant landlord getting a bad report from a property manager. He's watching, up close, and what he sees is the raʻ — the evil, the badness — of ʼādām, humanity, and it's rab: abundant, multiplied, everywhere Strong's.

Then the verse drills down further, and this is the part easy to skim past: it's not just that people were doing bad things. It's that "every inclination (yētser — the thing formed, the shape something takes) of the thoughts of his heart was altogether evil all the time." Four separate words stack up to make sure you can't wriggle out of it: every inclination, all the time, of the thoughts, of the heart — and in Hebrew, "heart" (lēb) isn't just feelings, it's the control center: will, intellect, motive, all of it Strong's. This isn't God cataloguing a list of crimes. This is God looking at the source code and finding it corrupted, not the occasional bug.

Adam Clarke put it sharply: the evil wasn't just in what people did, it was in the very embryo of every thought, before it even became an act Adam Clarke. That's the uncomfortable depth of this verse — it locates the problem not in behavior management but in the human heart itself, before a single choice is even made.

This verse is the hinge of the flood story. Everything before it ( Genesis 1–5, the good creation, the fall, Cain, the spreading violence) builds to this diagnosis, and everything after it (the flood, the ark, Noah) is God's response. Where Christians disagree: some read this as describing a totally depraved human nature inherited by everyone after Adam (much of the Reformed tradition leans hard here), while others read it more as a description of how bad things had become by Noah's generation specifically, without settling every question about how deeply sin runs in every human heart from birth. Both readings take the verse seriously; they differ on how far to extend it.

Genesis as we have it was shaped and written down for the people of Israel, most likely reaching something like its final form during or after the Babylonian exile — when Jerusalem was destroyed and its people carried off to Babylon around 586 BC — though the traditions behind it go back much further, some plausibly to Moses around 1400–1200 BC. Whenever exactly it was written, its audience were people who needed to understand who this God was who had claimed them, and where the mess of the world around them had come from.

The flood story itself sits in a world saturated with other flood stories — the Babylonians told one about Utnapishtim, the Sumerians had their own. Ancient people all up and down the Fertile Crescent (the river valleys of Mesopotamia and Egypt) knew catastrophic floods and told stories trying to explain them, usually as the gods getting annoyed at human noise or overpopulation. Genesis tells a strikingly different story: not capricious gods irritated by noise, but a holy God grieved by real moral evil — violence, corruption, the wreckage humans made of each other and the world he'd called good.

By the time you get to Genesis 6, the narrative has already shown you Cain killing Abel, Lamech boasting about multiplying vengeance, and a world spreading out and multiplying its wickedness along with its population. This verse functions almost like a courtroom verdict after all that evidence has been presented. The original readers — Israelites who knew their own history of idolatry, injustice, and rebellion — would have heard this not as ancient gossip about people long dead, but as a mirror. This is what we're capable of. This is what required God to act with that much severity.

The verb for "saw" is רָאָה (rāʼāh, H7200) — plain, direct seeing, not inference Strong's. God isn't guessing at the human heart from a distance; he's looking straight at it.

The word for "wickedness" is רַע (raʻ, H7451), the basic Hebrew word for "bad" — moral or natural evil Strong's. Paired with רַב (rab, H7227), "abundant, great in quantity," you get the sense of evil that has multiplied and spread, not a contained problem but a flood in its own right, ironically, before the literal flood even comes Strong's.

The phrase "every inclination of the thoughts of his heart" is worth slowing down on. יֵצֶר (yētser, H3336) comes from a root meaning "to form" or "to shape" — like a potter shaping clay Strong's. It's the same word Jewish tradition later used to talk about the "evil inclination" (yetzer hara) at war inside a person. Add מַחֲשָׁבָה (machăshābāh, H4284) — "plan, scheme, intention" — and לֵב (lēb, H3820) — "heart," meaning the whole inner control room of will, feeling, and thought together — and you get a picture of evil not as an occasional wrong turn but as something baked into the very shaping process of human intention Strong's.

Finally, רַק (raq, H7535) means "only" — limiting, exclusive — and יוֹם (yôwm, H3117), "day," used here idiomatically for "all the time, continually" Strong's. Put it together and the Hebrew is relentless: not "mostly evil," not "evil sometimes" — only evil, all the time. The grammar itself refuses you an escape hatch.

This verse is one of the darkest diagnoses in the whole Bible, and it's exactly the diagnosis that makes sense of why Jesus had to come the way he did. Jesus himself echoes this verse almost word for word in Matthew 15:19 — "out of the heart come evil thoughts" — naming the same root problem Genesis names here: the disease isn't behavioral, it's cardiac. You can't legislate, educate, or flood your way out of a heart problem. God tried the flood in Genesis, and by Genesis 8:21 he says the human heart is still evil from youth — same words, same diagnosis, even after judgment. The flood cleaned the world; it didn't touch the heart.

That's the wall this verse puts up, and it's the wall the whole rest of the Bible is trying to get past. God doesn't solve the heart problem by drowning it out of people. He solves it, eventually, by climbing into a human heart himself and doing what no flood could do — dying under the very judgment this verse describes, and rising to give a new heart from the inside. That's the promise Ezekiel later makes explicit (a new heart, a new spirit), and it's what Jesus is doing when he doesn't just judge the crowd's actions but goes after the heart in the Sermon on the Mount, and ultimately gives his own life as the sacrifice for what's found there.

So this verse doesn't get quoted directly about Jesus anywhere in the New Testament, but it sits underneath everything he does. He's the answer to the exact problem Genesis 6:5 names. Where the flood was God's judgment on the heart's fruit, the cross is God's judgment absorbed for the heart, and the resurrection is the down payment on a heart finally being made new — not just restrained, but remade.

Here's the hard part of this verse: it's not really about "them," the ancient people who got flooded. It's about the shape of every human heart, including yours, before it gets touched by grace. Not just what you've done — what you would do, what you're capable of imagining, wanting, justifying, when nobody's watching and nothing's stopping you.

Most of us manage our reputation, not our hearts. We keep the outside presentable while the inside runs its own evil inclination, quietly, "all the time," exactly like the verse says. This verse won't let you get away with comparing yourself to someone worse. It puts a mirror up and says: look at the source, not just the behavior.

The cost this verse asks of you is honesty — the kind that doesn't defend itself. Not "I made some mistakes" but "left to myself, what's forming inside me is not good." That's a hard thing to sit with, and it should be. But it's also the only honest place to start, because it's the only diagnosis that makes the gospel make sense. If your heart just needs a little coaching, you don't need a savior who dies for you — you need a life coach. If your heart is what this verse says it is, you need someone to actually replace it.

So don't rush past the discomfort here. Let it do its work. Ask God to show you — really show you — one inclination in your own heart right now that you've been managing instead of surrendering. Then bring it to him, not to fix yourself up before you come, but because this is exactly the kind of heart he came to remake.
