Genesis 3:9

Look at what just happened. Adam and Eve have eaten the fruit, sewn fig leaves together, and crawled behind the bushes when they heard God walking in the garden. And now God speaks first. Not the man, hiding in shame — God. He "called out" — addressed Adam by name, came looking — and the very first word out of his mouth after the world broke is a question: "Where are you?"

Now, here's what's easy to miss. God isn't lost. He didn't misplace Adam like car keys. The God who made the man from dust knows exactly which shrub he's cowering behind. So why ask? Because the question isn't for God's information — it's for Adam's. It's a question designed to pull a confession out of a hiding man Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament. Here's the tender thing the Reformers saw: this is a pursuit. God doesn't have to come looking. He could let the man rot in the bushes. This verse sits at the hinge of Genesis — the moment innocence ends and the long story of God chasing runaway people begins. Watch the pattern repeat: to Cain, "Where is your brother?" ( Genesis 4:9); to Hagar, "Where have you come from?" ( Genesis 16:8). God keeps showing up with questions for people who've run.

Genesis was written down for the people of Israel — traditionally through Moses, in the centuries after they came out of slavery in Egypt (roughly the 1400s–1200s BC, though many scholars think it reached its final shape later). These were people who knew, in their bones, what it felt like to be far from home. They'd been slaves. They'd wandered a desert. They were surrounded by neighbors — Egyptians, Canaanites, Babylonians — whose stories about the gods were nothing like this.

That contrast matters. In the other creation stories floating around the ancient world, humans were an afterthought — made to do the gods' grunt work, to feed them, to keep them from being bothered. The gods of Babylon didn't come strolling through a garden in the cool of the day looking for you. They were distant, hungry, capricious.

And here is Israel's God, doing the unthinkable: after the man has betrayed him, God comes walking — the text pictures him moving through the garden like a friend taking an evening stroll — and calls out for the very person who wrecked everything. The first people hearing this story would have felt the shock of it. Their God pursues. Their God seeks the guilty.

The garden itself would have rung a bell for ancient readers — a lush, walled enclosure with a stream, the kind a great king built. Eden is God's royal garden, and Adam was meant to be its caretaker-prince. Now the prince is hiding in the hedges like a thief. The world's first hide-and-seek, and it's the Maker who's "it" — not because he can't find his child, but because his child has learned, for the first time, to run.

The verse opens with a name pairing that carries enormous weight: יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהִים (Yᵉhôvâh ʼĕlôhîym) — "the LORD God" Strong's. Yᵉhôvâh (H3068) is God's personal, covenant name — tied to the idea of the One who simply is, the self-existent, eternal One. ʼĕlôhîym (H430) is the broader word for God, the mighty Maker of heaven and earth. Putting them together is deliberate: the cosmic Creator and the personal, named God who keeps relationships are the same God. The one strong enough to make galaxies is the one who comes looking for one frightened man.

The word for "called out" is קָרָא (qârâʼ, H7121) — to address someone by name, to hail them, to accost a person you've met on the road Strong's. It's not a vague shout into the trees. It's God walking up and speaking to Adam, personally.

And then the question itself, just two short Hebrew words: אַיֶּכָּה — from אַי (ʼay, H335), simply "where?" Strong's. It's tiny. Almost gentle. Not a thundering interrogation but a soft, searching where are you? — the sound a parent makes walking through a dark house calling a child who's done something wrong and gone silent.

Notice too the word for the man: אָדָם (ʼâdâm, H120), "human being," from a root tied to the ground, the red earth (H119) Strong's. The creature made from dirt has hidden from the One who breathed him to life.

Hold onto that picture: God walking through a garden, calling out for a hiding sinner. That's the opening note of a song that doesn't resolve until a different garden, thousands of years later.

Because "Where are you?" is a question with two halves. The first half is here — God seeking the lost man. But the second half waits a long time for its answer. Where is the human who will not hide? Where is the Adam who, when God comes walking, steps out instead of back?

His name is Jesus. And the answer comes most clearly in a garden called Gethsemane, where Jesus — the man who never sinned, who had nothing to hide — does not run when the soldiers come with their torches. John tells us he steps forward and says, "I am he... if you are looking for me, let these men go" ( John 18:8). The first Adam hid in the bushes to save himself. The last Adam walked out of the shadows to save us. Paul makes the link plain: "For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive" ( 1 Corinthians 15:22).

And here's the grace that should knock the wind out of you. The "Where are you?" in Eden was God seeking the guilty — but the seeking cost God nothing yet. By the time the question is fully answered, God has come not just walking through a garden but hanging on a tree, taking the hiding sinner's punishment into himself. "The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost," Jesus said ( Luke 19:10). That word seek — it started here, in Genesis 3:9. He's been calling your name ever since.

Let the question find you, because it's still being asked. Where are you?

You know how to hide. We all became experts the moment we inherited Adam's instinct. You hide behind being busy. You hide behind being right. You hide behind the version of yourself you post online, or the competence you wear to work, or the fig leaves of "I'm fine, how are you?" You've got a closet full of bushes to crawl behind, and the deepest one is just avoiding God — skipping the prayer, dodging the verse that pricks you, keeping the conversation surface-level so he never asks about the thing you don't want to talk about.

Here's what should stop you cold: a guilty conscience is wildly creative. It turns God's footsteps into a threat. It hears love coming and assumes it's the police desiringgod.org. So you run — when no one's actually chasing you to destroy you. The voice in the garden wasn't an arrest. It was a rescue. That's the cost this verse asks of you: stop hiding. Come out of the bushes. Answer honestly. Not because God needs the information — he's known exactly where you are the whole time — but because confession is the door back into his presence, and you can't walk through a door with your back against it.

He's not asking where are you to corner you. He's asking because he came looking. The God who could have left you in the dark is calling your name in it. Will you answer?

• Forgive me for hearing your love as a threat, for fleeing when no one was chasing me but my own guilty conscience.
• Jesus, thank you that you walked out of the garden's shadows so that I could be brought back into the light — be my hiding place instead of my fear.
• Make me quick to answer "Here I am" instead of going silent when you ask hard questions of my heart.

• When you sense God getting close to a tender area of your life, what's your instinct — to step forward, or to crawl behind something? What's the bush?
• Adam hid his sin behind his shame — talked about being naked instead of being disobedient. Where are you doing the same: confessing the surface feeling to avoid confessing the real thing?
• Do you actually believe God's "Where are you?" is a rescue and not an arrest? Where does your gut still hear it as a threat — and what does that reveal about how you picture his heart?
• Name one honest sentence you've been avoiding saying to God. What would it cost you to say it out loud today?
• Who in your life is hiding in the bushes right now, and is God maybe sending you to walk through their garden and gently call their name?
