Genesis 36:15

Read this verse slowly and you'll notice it's doing something specific: it's not just listing grandsons, it's promoting them. Verse 4 already told you Eliphaz was Esau's son by Adah. Now, a few verses later, Eliphaz's own sons — Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, and others coming right after — get a title: "chief." The Hebrew word is ʼallûwph (H441), and it's the same word used later for tribal heads, clan captains, the guy other men listen to Strong's. Some translations render it "duke," which sounds like British nobility, but that's misleading — think tribal sheikh, the head of an extended family with real authority over land, herds, and men Jamieson-Fausset-Brown.

What's easy to miss is the shape of the whole chapter forming around this verse. Genesis 36 is a genealogy — genuinely one of the driest-looking chapters in the Bible — but it's doing serious theological work. God promised Esau's grandfather Abraham that he'd become "the father of many nations." Esau, not Jacob, is the one visibly exploding into nations and chieftains and kings first Matthew Henry. Fourteen chiefs get named across this section — seven through Adah's son Eliphaz, four through Basemath's son Reuel, three through Oholibamah — and it reads like a kingdom taking shape in real time Adam Clarke. Meanwhile Jacob's family, the line God actually chose to carry His covenant, is still just seventy people about to go be slaves in Egypt.

This sits in Genesis right after Jacob's reconciliation with Esau and right before the Joseph story explodes into thirteen chapters. The disagreement worth naming: some readers see this list as filler, proof nothing theological is happening; others (rightly, I think) see it as Genesis quietly insisting that God keeps ALL his promises — even to the son who wasn't chosen — which makes it more remarkable, not less, that he stayed faithful to the son who was.

Genesis reached its final form we have it in sometime before Israel entered Canaan, likely edited together from older material — Jewish and Christian tradition credits Moses (roughly 1400s–1200s BC), though the sources behind chapter 36 probably reach back further into oral tribal memory. What you're looking at here is essentially a national archive: a list of the tribal chiefs of Edom, the nation descended from Esau that settled in the rugged hill country southeast of the Dead Sea, called Seir.

This mattered enormously to the first readers because Edom wasn't some far-off, forgotten cousin — it was Israel's next-door neighbor, and a hostile one. By the time Israel wandered near Edom's territory after leaving Egypt, the Edomites refused them passage ( Numbers 20:14-21). Centuries later, Edom would celebrate and even participate in Jerusalem's destruction by Babylon in 586 BC — which is exactly why the prophet Obadiah singles out Teman, one of the chiefs named right here in verse 15, for judgment: "your mighty men, O Teman, will be terrified" ( Obadiah 1:9). Jeremiah and Ezekiel do the same ( Jeremiah 49:20, Ezekiel 25:13). So when an Israelite audience first heard this genealogy read aloud, "Teman" wasn't a random name — it was the name of the region their enemies came from.

There's a strange grace note buried in this same family line, though: Job's friend "Eliphaz the Temanite" ( Job 2:11) carries these very names — Eliphaz, Teman — suggesting Job himself may have lived in or near this Edomite world, wrestling with God's justice far outside the covenant family of Abraham. God's dealings weren't confined to Israel's tents; they reached into Esau's territory too.

The load-bearing word here is אַלּוּף (ʼallûwph, H441) — translated "chief" in the BSB, "duke" in the KJV. Its root idea is "familiar" or "tame," related to a word for cattle — the picture underneath it is something like "the one everyone knows, the one at the head of the herd" Strong's. Keil and Delitzsch note it's tied to the word for "thousand" or "family group," so an ʼallûwph is the head of a major family division — not royalty exactly, but a man whose name carries the whole clan behind it Keil-Delitzsch Old Testament.

Look too at אֱלִיפַז (ʼĔlîyphaz, H464), Eliphaz's name itself — built from ʼEl (God) and paz (gold), meaning something like "God is fine gold" or "God is my treasure." It's striking that a name praising God shows up prominently in the family line of the brother who despised his birthright.

תֵּימָן (Têymân, H8487) is just "Teman" — but notice it becomes both a man's name and later a region's name, which is exactly why the prophets can say "Teman" to mean an entire people group centuries later. And קְנַז (Qᵉnaz, H7073) means "hunter" — a fitting name in a family whose patriarch Esau was famous as "a skillful hunter, a man of the field" ( Genesis 25:27). The names aren't decoration; they're little windows into character and destiny running down the family tree Strong's.

There's no straight prophetic line from this verse to Jesus — no chief here is a type of Christ the way, say, Joseph or David is. But there's a real and important echo, and it's worth sitting with rather than skipping past.

Paul reaches back into exactly this family split — Jacob and Esau, chosen and not chosen — in Romans 9:10-13 to explain something crucial about how God's promises actually work: not by human effort or birth order, but by God's own free choice and mercy. Esau, the firstborn, gets the nations, the chiefs, the kingdoms — all the visible markers of success the ancient world cared about. Jacob, the younger, gets something invisible and slower: a covenant, a promise, eventually a Messiah. Genesis 36 is, in a sense, letting you feel the weight of what it must have looked like to be Jacob's descendants watching Esau's family flourish first and bigger. That's the exact tension Paul is untangling centuries later — that God's electing love doesn't run on the world's timetable or its scoreboard.

And then there's Job. If Eliphaz the Temanite in Job 2:11 really does trace back to this Eliphaz, then somewhere in Esau's "unchosen" line, a man ends up wrestling honestly (if badly) with the question of divine justice and suffering — a question the whole Bible answers most fully at the cross, where the truly innocent one suffers for the guilty. Esau's family was outside the covenant line, but never outside God's reach or God's story. That's the quiet gospel thread here: God's saving purposes were always bigger than the one chosen family — which is exactly why, centuries later, Gentiles like you and me could be grafted into the promise at all ( Romans 11:17).

It's tempting to skim genealogies like this — your eyes glaze, you flip ahead looking for "the good part." But sit with the discomfort this verse actually creates for a minute: Esau, the man who traded his birthright for a bowl of soup, the man Scripture elsewhere calls "godless" ( Hebrews 12:16), is thriving. Chiefs. Nations. Kingdoms with kings, listed a few verses later, "before any king reigned over the Israelites" ( Genesis 36:31). Meanwhile the chosen family — Jacob's — is small, scattered, about to be slaves.

Here's the question this verse quietly puts to you: are you measuring God's faithfulness by what's visible and impressive, or by what he actually promised? Because if you're keeping score by chiefs and kingdoms and who's winning right now, you will misread your own life constantly. You'll look at the people who ignored God and got the promotion, the marriage, the applause — and you'll wonder if faithfulness even pays. Esau's family tree is Exhibit A that the wicked really can "flourish like a well-rooted native tree" ( Psalm 37:35), for a while.

The cost this verse asks of you is patience without bitterness. Not pretending the other guy isn't flourishing — Genesis doesn't pretend that, it names all fourteen chiefs in detail — but trusting that God's slower, quieter, promised path is still the one worth staying on. That's costly. It means staying faithful in obscurity while someone else's name is in lights. It means trusting a promise you can't yet see fulfilled, the way Jacob's descendants had to trust it for four hundred more years in Egypt before it even started to look true.

• Lord, when I see people who ignore you thriving and succeeding, keep me from bitterness or envy — help me trust your timing over my scoreboard.
• Thank you that your promises don't depend on being first, biggest, or most visible — teach me to value what you value.
• Give me patience to walk the slower, hidden path of faithfulness, even when it looks like I'm losing by the world's measure.
• Remind me that you are faithful even to the parts of the story that aren't about me — you kept your word to Esau's line too, so I can trust you'll keep your word to me.
• Where I've traded something precious for something quick and shallow like Esau did, call it what it is and draw me back.
